S Africa leave out experienced trio for Australia Tests
There was no place for 2019 and 2023 World Cup winners Lukhanyo Am, Faf de Klerk and Makazola Mapimpi when coach Rassie Erasmus released his squad on Wednesday.
The experienced trio are on a stand-by list in case of injury as Erasmus named a 37-player group to meet the Wallabies in Johannesburg on August 16 and in Cape Town a week later.
Recent new caps Ethan Hooker (utility back), Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Boan Venter (both props), Marnus van der Merwe (hooker) and Cobus Wiese (utility forward) have all been included.
Bath prop Thomas du Toit has been granted a compulsory two-week rest as agreed with the English Premiership, while number eight Jasper Wiese, the brother of Cobus, is serving a four-week suspension.
Erasmus has already used almost 50 players in three Tests this year as he looks to add depth to the squad with the 2027 Rugby World Cup in mind.
"It's always challenging to reduce the squad, especially given how the expanded group of players put up their hands (in wins over Italy and Georgia this month), but we always said we would select a smaller, more manageable squad during the Rugby Championship," Erasmus said.
"We probably have three players who can cover each position. One of our key pillars as a team is to build squad depth, and there is no better way to see what some of the younger players are capable of than to expose them to some of the top teams in the world."
The Springboks have also invited three players from South Africa's victorious side at the recent Under-20 World Cup to train with the team to gain experience.
They are loose-forward Bathobele Hlekani, wing Cheswill Jooste and scrumhalf Haashim Pead.
SOUTH AFRICA SQUAD:
Forwards: Lood de Jager, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jean-Luc du Preez, Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Siya Kolisi, Wilco Louw, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Franco Mostert, Ox Nche, Ruan Nortje, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Kwagga Smith, RG Snyman, Marnus van der Merwe, Marco van Staden, Boan Venter, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cobus Wiese

Rugby Australia relaxes 'redundant' limit on foreign-based players
Rugby Australia has signalled that more overseas-based players will be allowed to represent the Wallabies, shifting away from a strict policy that has heavily favoured domestic players. The so-called "Giteau Law" -- named after former fly-half Matt Giteau -- has for years put restrictions on overseas-based players being selected for the Wallabies. But with Test stars such as lock Will Skelton, flanker Tom Hooper and prop Taniela Tupou all joining an exodus to Europe, Rugby Australia has indicated the Giteau Law has been dropped. That gives head coach Joe Schmidt a free selection hand when he names his squad for the Rugby Championship this week. "Joe's got no impediment to select whoever he wants," Rugby Australia head of high performance Peter Horne said. "The Giteau Law, it's kind of redundant right," Horne added in comments reported by Schmidt is due to name his squad Thursday for the Rugby Championship which begins this month. Scrapping the rule would also benefit incoming head coach Les Kiss, who takes over the Wallabies next year tasked with preparing for the Rugby World Cup on home soil in 2027. The Giteau Law was adopted by the Wallabies in 2015, allowing overseas-based players to represent the side only if they had played 60 Tests for Australia and seven seasons of Super Rugby. It enabled players such as Matt Giteau, who was then starring for Toulon, to be picked for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Before then, Australia had a blanket ban on overseas-based players representing the Wallabies. sft/dh

Edmed set for Wallabies redemption after painful three-minute debut
Tane Edmed is poised for a return to Test rugby, with the former Waratahs playmaker set to be picked in the Wallabies squad for the Rugby Championship opener against South Africa, due to be named on Thursday. Edmed made his debut for the Wallabies last November against Ireland, lasting just three minutes in Dublin after coming on as a 74th-minute substitute before being knocked out while making a tackle. Edmed will come into the squad after Reds five-eighth Tom Lynagh was ruled out after suffering his third concussion of the season after being illegally cleared out of a ruck by British and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan in the third Test. Sheehan subsequently received a four-match ban for the 'reckless' hit on Lynagh, which officials did not pick up during the game. Edmed struggled for game time for the Waratahs this season, starting just five games out of 12 for NSW, and departed for the Brumbies at the end of the Super Rugby season. The playmaker impressed selectors with a strong performance for the AUNZ XV against the Lions in the 48-point defeat in Adelaide three weeks ago. Edmed's Brumbies teammate Ryan Lonergan is a chance to earn a Wallabies debut after also impressing against the Lions in Canberra, with halfback Jake Gordon ruled out of the TRC with hamstring issues. Nic White is set to be named in the squad, bringing to an end one of the shortest Test retirements in history. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt had previously joked that the Force player was like Australian singer Johnny Farnham, who enjoyed multiple farewell tours.
