Urgent order to remove wrecked and abandoned vessels from SA harbours
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has directed the urgent removal of wrecked and abandoned vessels that pose significant risks to navigation, marine ecosystems, and the safety of coastal communities.
These efforts reflect the bold steps being taken to address longstanding environmental and safety complexities in South Africa's proclaimed fishing harbours, including Gordon's Bay, Lamberts Bay, Saldanha Bay, St Helena Bay and Hout Bay.
'For too long, these derelict vessels have been a blight on our harbours, endangering our marine environment and the safety of those who rely on these waters. I am committed to reversing this legacy of neglect and ensuring our coastal infrastructure supports both environmental sustainability and economic prosperity,' the Minister said.
Under the authority of the Wreck and Salvage Act 94 of 1996, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has issued Marine Information Notice MIN 08-25, directing the owners of identified wrecks to remove their vessels by 16 June 2025.
Failure to comply by this date will result in further action by the authorities, with costs recoverable from the owners as stipulated in the Act.
According to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment the removal of these wrecks will enhance the safety of harbours, protect marine biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of communities that depend on these waters.
'Our harbours are vital to our coastal communities and marine ecosystems. By removing these wrecks, we are safeguarding our oceans for future generations and creating safer, more sustainable hubs for maritime activities,' George said.
The department, in consultation with SAMSA, will ensure that the process is conducted responsibly, prioritising environmental protection and compliance with legal frameworks.
The Minister has called on all wrecked and abandoned vessel owners to cooperate fully with this directive and contact SAMSA promptly to arrange compliance by 16 June 2025.
'I urge vessel owners to act swiftly and responsibly to meet the 16 June 2025 deadline. Together, we can restore the vibrancy of our harbours and protect the natural heritage of our coastline,' he said.

DNA results confirm the murder of Pretoria journalist
The South African Police Service has confirmed that the remains found in Rust De Winter last month, are of journalist, Aserie Ndlovu and his partner. Ndlovu and his girlfriend went missing on 18 February 2025. The bodies analysed for DNA were discovered by SAPS on 8 May 2025. 'The SAPS can now confirm that a DNA analysis has been concluded and has positively linked the remains to that of Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli', said national police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe. Mathe said the remains found were analysed and matched against samples taken from biological relatives of both Ndlovu and Mdhluli. SAPS has notified both families of the positive DNA match. The families have also been told that the results confirm that the remains found are of the missing couple. Mathe said the police were pleased to assist both families in finding closure. While the families come to terms with this new development, the case of the suspected killers of Ndlovu and Mdhluli continues before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court. Seven suspects were arrested on 4 May 2025, over two months since the couple had been missing. The seven were charged with kidnapping, house robbery and possession of stolen property. Last month, a cross province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police led SAPS to the seven suspects. They were questioned and subsequently arrested. 'The first suspect who is arrested, is according to investigations, the last to be in the company of the missing couple', said Mathe. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be that of the missing journalist', she continued. Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has previously attributed the police successfully apprehending the suspects, to public participation. 'The social media community must also be appreciated for sharing the pictures of these suspects far and wide. Police nab 5 suspected CIT robbers after crash near Sundra
Five suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were apprehended yesterday afternoon in Sundra – a settlement on the border of Mpumalanga – following a police chase. According to Ridge Times, the suspects allegedly targeted a CIT vehicle in Bronkhorstspruit before fleeing along the R42 towards Delmas and then onto the N12 highway heading towards Johannesburg. Their getaway vehicle overturned near the R50 off-ramp to Bapsfontein and Sundra, prompting the suspects to flee on foot through nearby maize fields. A police helicopter was also used to trace the suspects. Orlando Pirates interested in signing African top teenager prodigy!
Orlando Pirates are set to announce a number of new signings soon as the transfer window opens for next season. Pirates are rumoured to have been busy with boosting their squad ahead of another busy campaign in 2025/26. They have kept tabs on him and they are impressed by his progress at Highlanders FC in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe,' said the source to the same publication. A second source said that Pirates will be monitoring Ndlovu in the ongoing COSAFA Cup in Bloemfontein.
