I love India: Brett Lee reacts to India-Pakistan champions clash cancellation

India Today4 days ago
Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has weighed in on the cancellation of the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan fixture at the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL), calling the situation "tough" while emphasising the importance of mutual respect and inclusivity in global sport. The India vs Pakistan WCL clash, scheduled to take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, was called off after several former Indian cricketers reportedly refused to take part. Their decision came in the wake of the heinous terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April-an incident that further strained already delicate ties between India and Pakistan.advertisementSpeaking at a press conference while representing the Australia Champions side, Lee acknowledged the complexity of the situation but maintained a neutral and respectful tone.
"That is a tough quesion. But the thing I'll say right is, I love India, I love Pakistan. So I hope that they can get to a discretion where they can appreciate themselves. But most importantly, we are here on a tournament. So Australia versus India versus South Africa. We are all inclusive. So what happened last night is what happened. We pushed for it," Lee, who is representing Australia Champions, told reporters in a press conference. The WCL, in its official statement, revealed that the India-Pakistan fixture was planned with the intention of fostering goodwill-drawing inspiration from a recent volleyball match between the two nations. However, the move drew backlash, particularly from the Indian contingent, prompting the organisers to cancel the match. The WCL also issued an apology for any distress or discomfort the announcement may have caused, admitting it may have misjudged the emotional climate.India Champions skipper Shikhar Dhawan later clarified that the decision not to play Pakistan had been communicated to the organisers well in advance. Sharing an email dated 11 May, Dhawan reiterated his stance in a post on X:"Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota."(I stand by the decision I took on 11 May. My country means everything to me, and nothing is more important than the nation.)India Champions, who lifted the WCL title last year, had beaten Pakistan in the final with a commanding five-wicket victory. Chasing 157, the Indian side delivered a powerful batting performance to seal the win and lift the trophy.- Ends

RCB pacer Yash Dayal accused of raping minor; FIR registered in Jaipur

JAIPUR: IPL side Royal Challengers Bengaluru's under-fire pacer Yash Dayal has been accused of raping a minor in an FIR registered against him by Jaipur Police. The 27-year-old cricketer from Uttar Pradesh is already facing charges of sexual exploitation from a woman in Ghaziabad who has alleged that Dayal abused her after promising to marry her during a five-year relationship. SHO of Jaipur's Sanganer Sadar police station Anil Jaiman said that the latest FIR was registered on Wednesday. "FIR was registered against Yash Dayal for rape under relevant sections of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) act and the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita)," he said here on Friday. According to Jaiman, the victim has alleged that the player raped her first in 2023 when she was 17 and a similar assault took place in April this year at a hotel in Sitapura area. "She alleged that the cricketer had promised help and support in her career. He contacted her in April this year when he was in Jaipur for IPL and called her to the hotel where he allegedly raped her again," the SHO said, adding that the matter was under investigation. Dayal, a medium pacer, is a reasonably well-known bowler in the Indian domestic circuit. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and has since played 27 first-class games, claiming 84 wickets. He has appeared in 71 T20 matches that have yielded 66 scalps. Dayal started his IPL career with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 before moving to RCB, which bought him for Rs five crore in the 2024 players' auction. He was retained by the Bengaluru team for this year's season too and was a key member of the trophy-winning outfit under Rajat Patidar.

Indian Men's Hockey Team To Tour Australia For Four-Match Series Next Month

As part of its preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup, the Indian men's hockey team will tour Australia for a friendly four-match series in Perth from August 15 to 21. The eighth-ranked Indian team will be playing the sixth-ranked hosts on August 15, 16, 19, and 21 at the same venue. The Asia Cup is due to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7. The continental showpiece offers a direct qualification spot for next year's FIH World Cup to the tournament winner. "This tour comes at a crucial time for us, just ahead of the Hero Asia Cup in Bihar. While these are technically friendly matches, they form a very important part of our preparation phase," India chief coach Craig Fulton said in a statement issued by Hockey India. "Playing against a team like Australia will test us in all aspects - both on the ball and off it - and that is exactly what we need to sharpen up before a major tournament," he added. Fulton said the side has completed a 10-day training block. "...the mood in the camp is upbeat as we are fully focused on what lies ahead. One of our key goals on this tour is to use the first two matches for selection purposes, while the remaining games will be played with the shortlisted squad for the Asia Cup," he said. "Our focus is firmly on moving forward -- the goal now is to prepare well and go to the Asia Cup with the intent to win it," he added. The two sides recently faced each other in the FIH Pro League in Europe, where Australia edged India 3–2 in both legs. India had scripted a 3–2 victory over the Kookaburras at last year's Paris Olympics -- their first Olympic win over Australia since the 1972 Munich Games. While recent encounters have been closely fought, Australia have historically held the edge in the rivalry, winning 35 of the 51 matches played between the two teams since 2013. India have won nine times, with seven matches ending in draws.
