HANOI: Vietnam's stock market started June on a positive note, with a modest gain on Monday, primarily driven by small and mid-cap stocks.
The VN-Index recovered the 1,335-point mark despite early pressure from large-cap declines, while liquidity eased slightly and foreign investors continued to sell, albeit at a reduced pace.
Early on, the market experienced downward pressure from a number of large-cap stocks, briefly pulling the VN-Index below 1,325 points.
However, continued cash inflows into small and mid-cap shares helped the rebound to end higher.
By the close of trading, the VN-Index rose 3.7 points, or 0.28%, to 1,336.3 points on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange.
Market breadth leaned towards the gainers, with 201 stocks advancing and 125 declining. Liquidity fell by 6.7% from the previous session to 0.8 trillion dong.
The VN30-Index, which tracks the 30 largest listed companies by market capitalisation, edged down 0.64 points, or 0.04%, to 1,423.04. Within the basket, 16 stocks gained, 13 declined and one remained unchanged.
Leading the market's upward momentum was Vietnam Rubber Group – Joint Stock Co, which climbed 2.09% and contributed over 0.6 points to the VN-Index.
It was followed by gains in two banking stocks: Techcombank, up 1.31%, and Sacombank, which rose 2.7%.
On the other hand, several major stocks posted losses and that weighed on the index.
The Vingroup cluster led the decliners, collectively dragging the VN-Index down by nearly five points, with VIC being the most notable, slipping 0.41%.
Analysts from Viet Dragon Securities said: 'The market continued to face resistance at the 1,345-point level and retreated.
'Liquidity declined slightly compared to the previous session, suggesting reduced profit-taking activity and easing selling pressure, particularly as foreign outflows moderated. — Viet Nam News/ANN

Ringgit likely to trade within RM4.22-RM4.23 against greenback next week

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is likely to trade around RM4.22 to RM4.23 next week, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that next week multiple United States (US) economic data will be out, namely the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) for the month of May which plays a key role in shaping the market. "While the data might show deceleration in inflation rate, the US Federal Reserve is likely to stay cautious as it is wary about the potential inflationary pressures arising from the tariff shocks. "Already, responses from the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Index survey indicated that businesses have become more pessimistic as the higher tariffs have affected the supply chains and resulted in higher operating costs," he told Bernama. The ringgit ended the week higher against the US dollar, closing at 4.2270/2360 on Friday from 4.2530/2605 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9324/9390 from 2.9531/9585 and inched higher against the British pound to 5.7212/7334 from 5.7284/7385 a week earlier. However, it depreciated versus the euro to 4.8268/8371 at Friday's close from 4.8169/8254 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2862/2934 on Friday from 3.2938/3002 the previous week, edged higher versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.5/260.2 from 260.4/261.1 and stronger vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.62/7.64 a week before, However, it weakened versus the Thai baht to 12.9599/9947 from 12.9507/9790 last week. -- BERNAMA

Vietnam welcomes over 9.2 million foreign tourists in first five months

HANOI: Vietnam welcomed more than 9.2 million international tourists in the first five months of 2025, up 21.3 per cent from the same period last year, with Malaysia among its top 10 source markets. In May alone, the country recorded 1.53 million international arrivals, a 10.5 per cent year-on-year increase, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, citing the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT). Tour operators described this as a strong showing despite the end of the usual peak travel season, setting a 10-year record for the month and underscoring Vietnam's appeal as a year-round destination. Tourism revenue from January to May was estimated at VN$38.4 trillion (US$1.47 billion), up 24.7 per cent from the same period in 2024. Air travel accounted for 85.2 per cent of arrivals, followed by land crossings (12.9 per cent) and sea routes (1.9 per cent). Despite its long coastline and port infrastructure, the VNAT noted that maritime tourism remains largely untapped. China remained the top source market with 2.36 million visitors, followed by South Korea with over 1.9 million. Other key markets included Taiwan (533,000), the United States (375,000), Japan (342,000), Cambodia (325,000), India (272,000), Australia (241,000), Malaysia (221,000) and Russia (210,000). The tourism authority added that it would continue promotional efforts to meet its 2025 target of 22 to 23 million international visitors.
