International Tea Day: Manav Kaul, Rajesh Tailang, Paritosh Tripathi and Priya Malik on books and poems around chai

Hindustan Times21-05-2025

'Coffee is for meetings but mulaqaats happen over chai!' On International Tea Day today, HT City talks to actor-poets on why tea is an enduring inspiration for them.
Manav Kaul's poem Purani Thandi Chai from his book Katranein (2024) reads:'Hum wahi baithe they usi ped ke neeche wali chai ke dukaan pe, jaati hui patjhad aati hui thand ke beech. Yahi woh jagah thi jahan hum mila karte hain aur chai ki chuskiyan lete huye ghanton batiyate rehte.'
'It goes back to those initial tough days of long theatre practice in Bhopal and Mumbai, and relief used to be chai breaks. I have been doing theatre for the last 25 years, so chai has subconsciously come in everything. People say all my plays and books have element of tea in it while my social media is filled with chai stories.,' he says, adding, 'Kitni bhi coffee pi lo pyaas to chai hi bujhati hai! Baat-cheet humesha chai pe hi hoti hain.'
Manav adds, 'Also, I am from Kashmir and different types of chais – sheer (noon), kehwa and lipton – are part of life there. Chai is an important element in my life and writing as well! Whenever I go to Indore, Bhopal and Lucknow I love the roadside tea. But, while travelling to roads, jungles and mountains I try to make my own tea as I am very sensitive about it!'
'Rajesh Tailang shauharat ke highway ke rahgeer hain. Khoobsoorat kavitayein lutate aagey badh rahe hain. Yeh highway shayad chaand par pahunch kar ruke! Dear Rajesh, wahin chai pe milengey!' poet-lyricist Gulzar had written in his note for actor-poet Rajesh Tailang's book Chand Pe Chai (2022).
'The romanticism of a young theatre artiste and the quest to change society and the world all happen over chai at road stalls. It's the most important thing in the theatre world. And, chand (moon) is every lover's delight, especially if you are Gulzar sahab's fan. Date ka matlab humare liye chai hai, not coffee! So, the thought was, 'What's a better date than chai on chand?''
He adds, 'Date ka matlab humare liye chai hai, not coffee! So, the thought was what's better date than chai on chaand! Will love to write something on chai more... cutting chai, 2x3 called 23 no chai or 3 ki 5 chai all this is so fascinating.'
'If we go back a little, chai is an excuse for friends to meet over a chit-chat or two lovers meeting over chai. Chai pe mulaqaat hoti hai, coffee par to meetings hoti hain. Maybe that's why we have songs like...Mummy ne meri tujhe chai pe bulaya hai! In my book Chaay-Si Mohabbat (2021) there are lot of similarities between chai and mohabbat — warmth and the perfect balance in sweetness," says Paritosh Tripathi.
Tripathi adds, 'Most important with tea is companionship — saath se bahut farak padta hai. As a theatre person, chai-samosa are a staple for me. Personally, I consume 1.5-2 cups in a go and in my poetry book there are lots of elements about tea. In India, I don't think there is anything above tea — from a chai ke tapri to the person heading the country.'
The actor starts her poetry show Chai Aur Kavitayein with the audience being served adrak wali chai. 'That creates a 'mahaul'… There is a fun poem Chai thandi ho rahi hai which is about my parents,' shares Priya Malik, recalling how her mum prepared the morning tea, while her dad handled the evening tea.
'Interestingly, whenever my father made tea in the morning, we'd know they'd had a fight and he was trying to pacify her,' she adds, declaring, 'Tea works better than sorry. My husband was a coffer lover, but I turned him into a massive tea lover!' For Priya, chai is an emotion that binds people and serves as an icebreaker after fights. 'I wrote: Mujhe pyar hai tumse usey kehna ka ek tareeka aur bhi hai – chai piyogey.'
Her poem reads: Sab kuch hone ke liye tumhara hona bhi jaroori hai, yeh garam chai ki pyali tumhare bin adhoori hai, ab ek aisi baat kahungi jo maine hazaar baar boli hai, jaldi aao...chai thandi ho rahi hai.

Rasha Thadani: There shouldn't be just one day dedicated to environment

She's all of 20, yet realises the power her voice holds as she steps into the public figure zone. Rasha Thadani, posing for HT City on the occasion of World Environment Day, appeals for more awareness throughout the year and not just this one day. 'I was born in a house which had more animals than humans. As a child, I was surrounded by them, I saw my mom (actor Raveena Tandon) have so much passion for the environment. In school, it would be a very small subject, we would be told to for example, go home and a plant a tree. But even that stirred something within me,' she says. A post shared by Rasha Thadani (@rashathadani) Rasha, as she grew up, adopted certain habits, 'Even when I am out with friends, and someone throws a tissue on the road, I stop the car and ask them to pick it up before we continue. They are scared to do anything around me! I also carpool as much as possible, either my friends travel with me in my car, or I, in theirs. I try to put my plans in other people's minds, for instance, when I wanted to go to the salon the other day!' Even at home, her family follows environment-friendly methods. Rasha elaborates, 'In every room of our house, there is a normal dustbin, and a separate dustbin to throw things which can be recycled, such as paper or cardboard boxes. Plastic bottles in our house are a complete no-no. There are small things that you can do for the environment, we have only one Earth.'

Ajay Devgn supports Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shifts demand that irked Vanga: ‘Honest filmmakers will not have problems'

Actor Deepika Padukone's reported exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit has sparked intense speculation and debate in social media in the last few days. Several anonymous sources said it was the actor's 'unprofessional' demands that led to her exit, one of them being that she would not work more than eight hours a day. Now, actor Ajay Devgn has come out in support of Deepika in the matter when he was asked to comment on this at the trailer launch of Maa. (Also read: Deepika Padukone-Sandeep Reddy Vanga row explained: Mudslinging & angry tweets over Triptii Dimri replacing DP in Spirit) Ajay was present at the trailer launch of Maa, the new horror thriller starring Kajol in the lead. He is one of the co-producers of the film. When a reporter asked Ajay to comment on the demands of 8-hour shift that have been doing the rounds of social media ever since Deepika's reported exit from Spirit, Ajay said, 'It's not that it's not going down well with people. Most of the honest filmmakers will not have problems with it. And apart from this, being a mother and working for eight hours, most people have started working eight-nine hours shifts.' He went on to add, "It's person to person, and I feel most of the industry understands this." A post shared by HT City (@htcity) Deepika had been signed for Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit opposite Prabhas earlier this year. This marked the actor's second Telugu pan-India project after Kalki 2898 AD, that also starred Prabhas. However, last week it was reported that she exited the film when her demands were not met. The actor herself has not commented on the matter. Later it was officially announced that Triptii Dimri has been cast opposite Prabhas in the film. Triptii has previously worked with Sandeep Reddy Vanga in Animal. Next, it was Sandeep Reddy Vanga who took to X to state that the script of the film has been leaked to the media. Without taking names, he called out dirty PR games and wrote, "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, you've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you are.... Putting down a Younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?" Spirit is produced by T-Series and Bhadrakali Pictures. It will feature Prabhas as a fierce and intense police officer. The film is currently in pre-production and is set to go on floors in 2025.
