How to watch Sunday's Cup race at Iowa Speedway: Start time, TV info and weather
On the bubble, the margin is as large as it's been this season with Chris Buescher hanging onto the final provisional spot by 42 points over Ryan Preece.
But it'll be hard to get comfortable for the three drivers above the cutline: Buescher, Alex Bowman (plus-63) and Tyler Reddick (plus-138). Since the advent of the Next Gen car, at least one driver below the cutline has won in the last four races of the regular season. Buescher, Ross Chastain and Bubba Wallace were bumped from the playoffs despite being above the cutline with four races left.
In the battle for the regular-season championship, the top four are separated by 20 points — the closest margin after 22 races since a 17-point gap among the top four in 2012.
Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott, William Byron and Kyle Larson occupy the top three spots for the seventh week this season. Elliott leads Byron by four points with Iowa, Watkins Glen, Richmond and Daytona remaining in the regular season.
Sunday's will mark the second for Cup at the 0.875-mile oval. Ryan Blaney won the inaugural race last year.
The track's 25,000-seat grandstands have been announced as a sellout.

MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway Suspended, Resuming Sunday
It was a red flag for Major League Baseball at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night. The Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds was suspended in the first inning because of rain, soaking a record-breaking crowd for the first regular-season game in Tennessee. The plan is to resume the game on Sunday afternoon. The first delay at the historic bullring of a racetrack came after the ceremonial first pitch featuring a pair of Hall of Famers in Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones, joined by NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. The second with one out in the bottom of the first led to the game being pushed back a day, much like a red flag in motorsports. Fans who stuck out the first delay started heading toward the exits before the game was delayed until Sunday. It was an unwelcome detour for the long-planned event mixing baseball and NASCAR. Iowa Hawkeyes QB Lands Major College Football Honor Before Season
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Iowa Hawkeyes are entering the 2025 college football season looking to get their program back on track. Kirk Ferentz is back for another year as the head coach and is hoping to see his team take a big step in the right direction. During the 2024 campaign, the Hawkeyes finished with a disappointing 8-5 overall record. That was accompanied by a 6-3 Big Ten schedule. One of the biggest issues last year was the quarterback position. Head coach Kirk Ferentz of the Iowa Hawkeyes looks on before the game against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium on September 23, 2023 in State College, Pennsylvania. Basically, he was a non-factor. Read more: Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith Sends Clear Warning to Texas Brendan Sullivan stepped in to replace him. He suffered an injury that hampered his ability and availability, but he completed 71.7 percent of his passes for 475 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 150 yards and four scores. Heading into the college football offseason, adding help at the quarterback position was a clear priority for Ferentz and the Hawkeyes. They were able to do just that. Hank Brown was one addition in the transfer portal from the Auburn Tigers, giving the team a potential starting quarterback next season and the following year. However, it was another transfer portal addition that brought in Iowa's starting quarterback. Ferentz was able to land a transfer commitment from former South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski. He is coming off of a 2024 season with the Jackrabbits that saw him throw for 2,721 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while completing 60.9 percent of his passes. Read more: Texas QB Arch Manning Receives Tough Reality Check on Future Gronowski is also dangerous on the ground. Last year, he racked up 380 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing. With that being said, Gronowski has received a major honor before the start of the 2025 season. He was named to the Maxwell Award watchlist, which is an award that is given yearly to college football's most outstanding player. Simply being included on the watchlist is a big deal. Should he be able to play up to the level that seems to be expected of him, Iowa could be a team to watch in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes aren't likely to win the conference, but they should be able to take a big step in the right direction. For more Iowa Hawkeyes and college football news, check out Newsweek Sports.

Christopher Bell takes accountability for incident with Zane Smith at Indy
NEWTON, Iowa — Christopher Bell steeled himself as he headed toward Zane Smith's crew after last weekend's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bell went to apologize for wrecking Smith in overtime — the third consecutive weekend Smith has lost several positions in the final laps. How to watch Sunday's Cup race at Iowa Speedway: Start time, TV info and weather Ryan Blaney looks to repeat his win in last year's inaugural Cup race at Iowa. Nate Ryan, 'I thought I could sweep underneath of him and clearly you wanted to be on the inside at Indy,' Bell said of his move on Smith. 'I tried to sweep underneath him, and I tried to make it as last minute as possible so that he couldn't counter my move, and I misjudged my run, ran into the back of him and turned him to the right.' Bell would reach out to Smith but also wanted to speak to Smith's crew at Front Row Motorsports. So what was it like to approach people larger than him and angry at him? 'I'm not going to lie,' Bell said Saturday at Iowa Speedway in response to a question from NBC Sports. 'I was nervous, but I knew I deserved what was coming, so I'm like I'm going to own it. If I want to walk up there (into the team's hauler) and they want to (yell at me with expletives) and tell me to get out, I deserved that in that moment. 'I felt like I owed them the respect. … I tried to show them accountability and tell them it was on me.' Apologies don't bring back results. Smith has lost about 50 combined positions in the final laps of the last three races. 'The past two weeks, nothing has been in our control,' Smith said of the issues in those late laps. 'Last week was for sure going to be a top-10, top-five day. Unfortunately, it was taken from us. Same thing at Dover.' The woes started at Sonoma. 'Sonoma was on me,' Smith said. The team opted to stay out on older tires late and restarted eighth with 13 laps to go. A pair of cautions allowed those behind with fresher tires to close on Smith. Iowa starting lineup: Chase Briscoe scores 6th NASCAR Cup pole of the season Chase Briscoe has won more poles this season than any other Cup driver. Dustin Long, 'When that happens and you get closer to the end, you're just so vulnerable,' Smith told NBC Sports. Those with fresher tires pounced. Smith dropped from seventh to 27th in the final four laps. At Dover, Smith was running 14th before an incident in overtime. Ryan Preece had contact and came down on Smith's car, turning it. Smith finished 22nd. 'I could hear (Preece) trying to gather it up,' Smith said. 'He just had a huge moment … nothing I could do there.' Then at Indy, Smith was running 13th when the contact from Bell wrecked him and Smith finished 31st. That's 46 positions lost in the final laps of the last three races for Smith. Good news, bad news for NASCAR Cup drivers ahead of weekend at Iowa Speedway Ryan Blaney won last year's inaugural Cup race at Iowa. Dustin Long, Despite the misfortune, Smith said the focus is on the positives in those races. 'My whole team, they aren't stupid, they see that we're running good and have speed when this happens,' he said. 'Now, if we were running 30th and get hooked, the guys are going to be pretty upset and just over it. It's far from that situation. My team has done an incredible job of grinding away.' Smith qualified 14th for Sunday's Cup race at Iowa (coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on USA). 'I feel like what we've unloaded some of these weekends, we just have a really good car,' Smith said. Now, it's just a matter of getting the finish that is deserved.
