Trump nominated US Attorney mysteriously resigns after just a month on the job
Gilbert's departure was confirmed by spokesperson Brian McGinn at 5 p.m. on Wednesday without further explanation.
McGinn did say that Gilbert would be replaced by his deputy, Robert Tracci, but otherwise did not provide further details on the upheaval.
Gilbert himself has not issued any statement about his resignation, but did post a meme from Anchorman (2004) of Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) sipping a bottle of beer after a mass brawl with several rival news crews and reflecting: 'Boy, that escalated quickly!'
He also replied to one commenter responding to the meme and inquiring about his well-being by saying simply: 'All good. Thank you.'
The Independent has reached out to both Gilbert and McGinn for clarity on the situation, with the latter replying to say that he had 'simply confirmed, when asked,' that the former had resigned and been succeeded by Tracci: 'Outside of that, I have no additional information.'
Trump, Virginia's Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, and the state's Democratic senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner had all enthusiastically recommended Gilbert for the role.
He was duly appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi on an interim basis, allowing him to get to work even without being confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He was sworn in on July 14 by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas T Cullen.
Gilbert was previously a Shenandoah Valley state lawmaker and the Republican speaker of Virginia's House of Delegates.
'I bring to this job truly the heart of a prosecutor,' he said in an interview with The Roanoke Times on his first day on the job.
'Even though I've been out of the game for a while,' he said, alluding to his political career, 'I feel like I've been waiting for the opportunity to do that again.
'I never imagined that it would be something as impactful as the U.S. Attorney, but I'm grateful for the opportunity the president has given me.'
'My main priority is not to mess up a good thing,' he added.

Trump's comments on the continuing conflict came as Russia staged its biggest hypersonic missile barrage on Ukraine since Putin met Trump last Friday . Poland was forced to scramble warplanes today to protect its airspace as the heavy assault began. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X: 'In connection with the activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory ... aircraft of the Polish Air Force and allied aviation are operating in Polish airspace.' Russian attacks on western Ukraine killed one person and wounded multiple others , officials in the country reported as diplomatic efforts to end the three-year war grind on. Moscow and Kyiv have kept up their aerial attacks on each other as world leaders including US President Donald Trump continue to push for a ceasefire. Russian fire also wounded 12 people in the city of Mukachevo, near the border with Hungary and Slovakia, the city council said.

JD Vance has revealed his closest buddies in the Trump administration. During an interview with Fox News Wednesday, Vance was asked about his closest allies, but initially seemed hesitant to respond, insisting he had "a lot" of good friends at work. He explained his hesitance by saying that 'the weird thing is, you say it's one person and then fundamentally that's an insult to other people." Eventually though he revealed his best friends at work are Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. 'We are very close, we were close in the Senate, he's been a great friend of mine, I think he's doing a great job,' Vance said of Rubio. And the feeling appears mutual. When Fox News host and presidential daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, asked Rubio last month whether he'd consider running for the White House again, he dodged and heaped praise onto Vance. 'I think JD Vance would be a great nominee," Rubio said. "I think he's doing a great job as vice president. He's a close friend.' Vance has previously said that he spends time with Rubio outside of the White House, and described him as 'more impressive in private than he is in public' at the American Compass gala in June, according to Real Clear Politics. President Trump also appears to have noticed the close friendship, suggesting that Vance and Rubio could run on the same ticket for the White House next time around. 'I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,' Trump said. On Wednesday, Vance also spoke about his friendship with Hegseth, explaining they had just dined together at a burger joint in Washington. The trio have also found themselves in hot water together during 'Signalgate' earlier this year. The scandal erupted in March when Trump's short-lived national security adviser Mike Waltz accidentally added Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg to a group chat in which top secret information about an upcoming bombing raid on Houthi rebels in Yemen was discussed. The group chat included Hegseth, Vance, Rubio, along with other top defense officials. Since then, the Secretary of Defense has fired three of his top aides in relation to a Pentagon leak investigation over the disclosure of classified materials. But on Wednesday, Vance insisted that Hegseth is doing a good job. 'I think he's doing a great job as Secretary of Defense,' Vance told Fox News. The vice president went on to suggest that Hegseth's controversies were a concerted effort by the "DC swamp" to undermine him. 'The DC Swamp tried to destroy Pete Hegseth unlike anybody in the administration,' Vance added. 'Whenever I see the worst people in the world trying to tear a guy down that makes me think he's on our side.'

Karoline Leavitt delivers BRUTAL workplace reality check and how to avoid tears in resurfaced training video
Before 27-year-old Karoline Leavitt became the youngest ever White House press secretary, she was already doling out brutal advice on how to survive an executive branch job. 'Your boss is not your friend,' Leavitt dished in a newly resurfaced training video. 'You are not your boss' top priority,' she also warned. Leavitt was tapped by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation to appear in one of its Project 2025 videos, intended to train political appointees going into a second Trump administration. The video appears to have been filmed before Leavitt joined Trump's presidential campaign in January 2024 and after she unsuccessfully ran for Congress. She was interviewed by the conservative Leadership Institute's Chris Hayes - not the MSNBC host - on the topic of 'The Art of Professionalism.' The Daily Beast resurfaced the video this week, labeling it a 'Secret MAGA Training Video.' Leavitt had served in the first Trump administration as an assistant press secretary under press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, before working on Capitol Hill for Trump ally, GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, and then launching an unsuccessful bid for a New Hampshire House seat. 'There will be many a times where you are working in an administration and there are very high pressure situations in my experience,' she recounted. Leavitt recalled how she and the White House press team would spend 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. briefing McEnany ahead of her taking the podium - only for those preparations to be derailed by breaking news or a statement from Trump. 'Those were some of the most high pressure moments of my life, knowing that the White House press corps was out there going to berate my boss on something that we had not covered throughout the day,' Leavitt said. 'And rather than get stressed out, cry or have a negative emotional response, you have to pull yourself up from your bootstraps. You have to be prepared. You have to execute in that moment,' she continued. 'And you have to be there to support the people that are counting on you to do your job.' Leavitt pressed that nothing prepares an aide for a White House job more than preparation itself. 'And if you fail to prepare for those moments, prepare to fail,' she warned. Leavitt also had frank advice on how to deal with bosses. 'First of all, your boss is not your friend,' she said. 'OK, so don't try to be friends with your boss. You work for your boss, and that's very important to remember too, especially in an administration.' 'And also don't pester your boss with things that are unnecessary to bring to your attention,' she added. Leavitt impressed upon future political appointees to look for answers themselves first, before asking their bosses a question. 'I can tell you there is nothing more annoying than having people come to you with things that are completely unnecessary,' she said. 'You are not your boss' top priority,' Leavitt warned. The future press secretary, who President Donald Trump refers to as a 'star,' was also clear that colleagues should be treated with respect. 'You remember the colleagues that helped you fondly and you remember the colleagues that weren't so helpful not so fondly,' she said. 'Your colleague today could be your boss tomorrow,' Leavitt also reminded the audience. She also told future Trump 2.0 employees that they should be grateful for the opportunity. 'It is really an honor to work for our federal government,' she said. 'Don't forget that your salary comes from the good, hard-working taxpayers across the country. Don't ever take a day for granted and continue to move up the ladder.' 'And remember everyone you meet in the workplace will help you get to another place someday. So nurture your relationships, cherish the people you meet on this journey,' she advised. 'It won't last forever. 'No administration does, of course, this is a democracy,' she said. 'So enjoy it while you have it.' The training video was originally leaked to and published in full by ProPublica last August, ahead of the 2024 election, when 'Project 2025' was a controversial campaign topic.
