Hydrogen Train in India BIG Update: Modi government likely to launch train by..., top speed to be..., Check route here
New Delhi: In a major development that promises to make the travelling experience of passengers convenient, the Ministry of Railways has informed that the government will launch the hydrogen-powered train set soon. According to the Indian Express report, the launch will be held after the prototype successfully clears the load tests. 'The much-anticipated Hydrogen Trainset has successfully passed load tests and is progressing well. It will be rolled out shortly,' said U Subba Rao, General Manager, ICF, on Friday, as quoted by the Indian Express. It is important to note that the project is a part of Indian Railways' 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative. Under the initiative 35 hydrogen-powered trains are planned for various heritage and hill routes. Developed at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the initiative aims to promote green transportation technology and support zero-carbon emission goals through the use of clean energy. These new trains will be equipped with multiple safety systems, including pressure relief valves, leak detection, flame sensors, temperature monitors, and optimised ventilation. The announcement comes soon after the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw teased the video of the same on his X account, saying, 'Bharat's First Hydrogen Train! Coming Soon' India's First Hydrogen-powered Train: All You Need To Know India's first hydrogen-powered train service will operate on the route connecting Haryana's Jind and Sonipat India is set to become the fifth country globally, alongside Germany, France, Sweden, and China, to deploy trains powered by hydrogen technology. The new train will be the world's most powerful and longest hydrogen-powered train The train will have a capacity to transport 2,600 passengers. The testing of the first hydrogen-powered train coach was completed at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The technology driving these trains involves each power car carrying 220 kg of hydrogen stored in specially designed cylinders pressurized to 350 bar. The system will power traction motors through fuel cells to generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, releasing only water vapour as a by-product. As hydrogen is highly flammable in nature, safety remains a critical focus here. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies have been conducted to simulate potential leak scenarios, guaranteeing robust mitigation measures. To recall, the Ministry of Railway earlier had confirmed on X that the hydrogen-powered train is set for its final commissioning. What Did The Ministry Say? 'Bharat's Hydrogen Journey ! For the first time in India a hydrogen-powered train is set for its final commissioning, a landmark that showcases India's rise as a technological powerhouse, driving innovation on the global stage,' the ministry said. Vaishnaw said that only four countries in the world manufacture such train engines. 'They produce somewhere between 500 to 600 horsepower, while the engine produced by Indian Railways using indigenous technology has an output of 1,200 horsepower, the highest so far in this category,' he said. Route & Speed: The train will run over the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route, reaching a maximum speed of 110 km/h. This makes it a great option for efficient short-distance travel. Passenger Capacity: It can accommodate a large number of commuters with a passenger capacity of 2,638, ensuring that most people can use this eco-friendly form of transportation.

Vande Bharat Sleeper: Titagarh Rail Systems to launch prototype train by September 2026
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: The Ministry of Railways is working in full swing to scale up the production of Vande Bharat Sleeper train in the country. This new modern train aims at transforming the long-distance travel in the country. It will further redefine the overnight journeys in the days to come. The national transporter awarded the contract to manufacture Vande Bharat Sleeper trains to three companies: BEML, Kinet Railway Solutions (a Joint Venture between Russian rolling stock major TMH and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited – RVNL) and a consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited and Bharat Heavy Engineering Limited (BHEL). 'The company expects to complete the production of the prototype train of 16 cars by Q2 of FY 27 and continue with series production thereafter in terms of the contract,' the company said in an exchange filing. It further added that the design phase of Vande Bharat Sleeper train project is in the final stage of completion. 'The Company is in advanced stages of completion of design phase of the project and has set up the complete car body production line for the Vande Bharat coaches in its plant in Uttarpara and started the production of the first car body during Q1FY26,' it said in a regulatory filing. The company will manufacture 80 Vande Bharat train sets. It also stated that the total order book of Vande Bharat trains (supply portion) amounts to Rs 9,600 crore, representing 1,280 coaches of which the company's share of the consortium was 51 per cent, amounting to Rs 4,943 crore. Railways plans to roll out Gati Shakti Freight trains for faster cargo movement
Indian Railways Freight Services: Indian Railways (IR) plays a crucial role in transporting bulk commodities which are essential for industry and energy sectors, food grains for national distribution, fertilizers for agriculture, and petroleum products. For long distances, rail transport has been more economical than road transport. It not only reduces overall logistics cost but also enables seamless supply chains across the country. Now, in a bid to boost the logistics sector, the Ministry of Railways is planning to introduce a Gati Shakti Freight train. This new semi-high-speed train will be manufactured at Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF). 'ICF is planning to introduce Gati Shakti Freight EMU, a semi-high-speed train for e-commerce and FMCG logistics, equipped with advanced container handling systems and crew amenities,' said U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF, on Friday while addressing the gathering on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day. The national transporter carries over 1.6 billon tonnes of freight traffic every year. Transporting freight by rail helps cut carbon emissions, lowers fuel costs and eases highway congestion. The freight carried by railways during 2020-21 was 1,233 million tonnes which increased to 1,591 million tonnes during 2023-24 i.e. a growth of 29 per cent. The railways has taken up construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) – Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 Km) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1506 Km). Out of total 2,843 Km, 2741 Route km (96.4%) have been commissioned and operational, which – carried 1,30,116 freight trains during FY 2024-25. In a written statement in Lok Sabha on July 23, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said: 'Indian Railways is working on increasing the capacity of its network through Corridors approach. Corridors like HDN (High Traffic Density), Energy, Minerals and Cement are being implemented on priority.'
