Minecraft Movie breaks box office record as highest-grossing video game adaptation in opening weekend
Minecraft's first movie has smashed box office records, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation in its opening weekend.
The film, titled A Minecraft Movie, has earned an astonishing $163m (£128m) in its first weekend at the North American box office, surpassing the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros Movie by nearly $20m (£15.7m). The total global revenue now exceeds $313m (£245m), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite its commercial success, critical reception has been less enthusiastic. The Independent 's Clarisse Loughrey described the movie as 'underwhelming' and argued that 'as an adaptation, it's flawed from the ground up.' Nevertheless, fan enthusiasm and brand loyalty have fuelled the movie's widespread popularity, both in the US and abroad.
Minecraft, developed by Mojang in 2009 and acquired by Microsoft for $2.5bn in 2014, is the world's best-selling video game with more than 200 million active monthly players worldwide.
Anticipation for the big screen adaptation has been over a decade in the making, with early development beginning in 2014 and filming finally starting in January 2024.
The film features an all-star cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Orange Is the New Black star Danielle Brooks. Black's performance, in particular, has been praised by fans, prompting social media trends and viral content online.
The film's popularity has also led to chaotic scenes in cinemas, particularly in the UK. Multiple cinema chains have reported disturbances during screenings, primarily involving young audiences.
Footage shared across social media shows food and popcorn being thrown across the audience, along with loud shouting, some swearing, and general raucousness, with some people jumping out of their seats. Dozens of young people and children are seen laughing with their phones out as they capture the disorder.
One moment, which features prominently in the film's trailer, sees Black and Momoa confronted in a boxing ring by a cuboid Minecraft chicken, which is ridden around by another character.
'Chicken jockey,' exclaims Black's character, a reference to the video game that seems to be sending audiences wild. Several videos captured by fans show audiences chanting the line along with Black, before whooping and clapping loudly.
In one cinema in the US, police were called to quell the commotion after viewers refused to calm down. It has prompted REEL cinema in the market town of Fareham to issue a warning to cinema-goers.

Inside Saw's future as 'disagreements' over film left horror franchise 'dead'
The Saw films were a staple of 2000s horror, introducing fans to the twisted, torturous traps of the iconic Jigsaw killer. Directed by James Wan and co-written with Leigh Whannell, the first film was released in 2004 in which serial killer Jigsaw imprisoned Adam Stanheight ( Whannell) and Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) with the purpose of subjecting them to a series of puzzles to escape. Across the franchise, Jigsaw – or John Kramer (Tobin Bell), as the jaw-dropping ending of the first film reveals – has attracted acolytes who have continued his twisted games spanning 10 films so far. Released in 2023, Saw X took us back in time to the period between Saw and Saw II in which Kramer desperately seeks life-saving treatment following his cancer diagnosis, but is instead duped by con artists and enacts his bloody revenge. Soon after its release, an 11th film was announced, but the production of Saw XI has been anything but smooth with delays, a cancellation, and rumours of behind-the-scenes drama. With a potential lifeline for the legendary horror series now in the mix, we take a look at what exactly is going on with Saw XI. Following the runaway success of Saw X, it was confirmed in December 2023 that Saw XI was on its way. Saw X landed the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating for any film in the franchise, grossing a whopping $125million (£92.3m) worldwide. It was announced that Kevin Greutert, who directed the 10th film, would be returning for Saw XI, and Bell would also be reprising his role as the iconic John Kramer. Co-writer Patrick Melton – who penned Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D – teased what fans could expect from the 'very timely' plot of the 11th installment. 'It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. Given Bell's return, it seems the 11th film was set to be another prequel set between the events of Saw and Saw II, which could have meant we would see Shawnee Smith's Amanda Young hit the big screen again. A post-credit scene from Saw X also saw Costas Mandylor reprise his role as police detective turned Jigsaw disciple Mark Hoffman, which could mean he was set to star in Saw XI though this was never confirmed. Speaking to SFX magazine, producer Oren Koules hinted that it would be a direct follow-up to the events of Saw X. 'Cecilia is still alive and Tobin and Shawnee are in a foreign country still. So that, to me, would be the natural place to take at least the next one,' he revealed. Saw XI was originally set to be released on September 27 of the same year, but was delayed until September this year, it was announced in April 2024. Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry, took the film's original release date. Two Lionsgate titles saw their release dates change in the same announcement – the remake of The Crow and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. After a period of silence over the film, sources told Bloody Disgusting that Saw XI was 'totally, 100% dead' due to disagreements at studio level. The report, released on March 27, claimed 'everything went sideways in January 2024' due to producers fighting. 'It's totally dead,' the insider said. 'It's 100% over. Almost a year now.' They claimed that one producer attempted to 'plough forward' with production, while the other 'put up roadblocks' that halted production. '[Lionsgate] didn't have anyone to smooth over the disagreement,' the source added, claiming 'greed and ego won.' Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Melton confirmed the claims that the movie has 'stalled at a managerial level.' 'The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page,' he said. He continued: 'It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play.' Saw – Netflix and Prime Video Saw II – Netflix Saw III – Netflix Saw IV – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw V – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw VI – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw: 3D – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Jigsaw – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Spiral: From The Book of Saw – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw X – Netflix The writer claimed he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft of the script in 2024, but that he hadn't 'heard anything' since then. Greutert also addressed the apparent cancellation in a Reddit post, writing: 'Let's just say that this past year+ has been among the saddest and most frustrating of my life.' A week after the damning news of the Saw XI cancellation, fans were offered an unusual glimmer of hope. The franchise's killer mascot, Billy the Puppet, posted a cryptic statement suggesting the game is far from over. 'I've seen the rumors. They say it's Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over,' the tricycle-riding puppet said in a statement shared by Lionsgate. But at the same time, it was announced that Saw XI had been completely removed from Lionsgate's release schedule, seemingly sealing its fate. Which brings us to June 4, 2025, when Deadline reported that Blumhouse is allegedly in the process of acquiring perspective rights to Twisted Pictures' portion of Saw. If the deal goes ahead, Blumhouse would take over the ownership of the franchise rights from Twisted Pictures owners Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Lionsgate would still be involved in the project, seeing as the company owns 50% of the franchise. More Trending If Blumhouse takes over the Saw franchise, and therefore Saw XI, it would mean Saw is reunited with co-creator James Wan following Blumhouse's merger with his company Atomic Monster. It is unknown what stage the deal is at, as Lionsgate, Twisted Pictures, and Blumhouse have not yet addressed the report. It could mean that Saw XI has been brought back from the dead by Blumhouse, famed for titles such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister, and many more. Oscar-winner's daughter slammed for calling her wealthy life a 'bore'
Sofia Coppola's daughter Romy Mars is 18 years old, absurdly well-connected, and, according to her new song, totally disillusioned with it all. The daughter of the Oscar-winning director and French musician Thomas Mars, and granddaughter of The Godfather legend Francis Ford Coppola, Romy has just released her debut single A-Lister. The track takes aim at the gilded cage of privilege she's been raised in, but many are divided on whether it's a salient satire or an out-of-touch cry for attention from a spoiled nepo baby. 'My world is heartless, tasteless, nameless, famous,' she sings in the chorus, her voice floating over polished production. The lyrics are blunt: red carpets are hollow, wealth is numbing, and fame is boring. 'Recreate scenes from Titanic on a flying bridge yacht / Just to feel something real,' she sighs, painting a picture of a decadent yet unhappy childhood. Romy is a fully-fledged 'nepo grandbaby,' part of a dynasty that includes cousin Nicolas Cage, aunt Talia Shire, and cousin Gia Coppola. She was scouted by Marc Jacobs at 13, sits front row at fashion weeks, and has been a fixture at galas and film festivals since before she could vote. So it's no surprise that reactions to A-Listers have been mixed. Some praised the track for its self-aware tone, calling Romy 'meta,' 'fresh,' or even 'a Gen Z Lana Del Rey with a trust fund.' One fan wrote under the music video on Youtube: 'So talented so good so fun!!! The women in this family are oh so creative and gifted and you are making your name for yourself, in your own right, with this song :) Go Romy Go!!!' Another agreed: 'I love this kind of nepo baby I'm obsessed!' But others saw it as tone-deaf. 'It's tasteless to call your multitudes of wealth that you didn't earn 'a bore,'' another YouTube comment reads. Another is blunter: 'Talentless, insufferable, overproduced nepo-baby garbage.' Adding to the buzz is the music video, directed by none other than her mother, Sofia Coppola, whose career has long explored themes of isolation, excess, and the invisible weight of being young, beautiful, and trapped. In Lost in Translation, it was Scarlett Johansson's disaffected newlywed. In The Bling Ring, it was teens robbing celebrities to get closer to fame. In A-Listers, it's her own daughter, lip-syncing in designer clothes, escaping to West Coast mansions and party scenes with a blank stare and heavy lashes. The irony is built in, and maybe (hopefully) intentional. It's not the first time Romy has gone viral for poking at the absurdity of her own life. In 2023, she caused an internet frenzy with a now-deleted TikTok video in which she tried to cook pasta while explaining she was grounded for attempting to charter a helicopter on her dad's credit card to visit a friend in Maryland. The clip earned millions of views. 'They don't want me to be a nepotism kid,' she said, referring to her parents' social media ban. More Trending Sofia later told The Hollywood Reporter she was none too pleased by the moment. 'She's funny,' she allowed. 'But people discussing my parenting publicly is not what I would've hoped for.' Still, for all the pushback, there's something undeniably compelling about Romy Mars. Like many young artists raised in rarefied air, she's testing how much of that identity she can claim, subvert, or escape from. Is she self-aware? Spoiled? Satirical? All three? Or just 18, trying to process a life most people couldn't dream of, and probably shouldn't envy? Got a story? Shoppers praise Cat Deeley's 'flattering' and 'comfortable' swimsuit
Cat Deeley showcased her sensational figure in a black swimsuit while on holiday in Marbella, and shoppers have hailed the Boden piece as 'extremely comfortable' This Morning's Cat Deeley turned heads as she showed off her pins in a 'flattering' black swimsuit while soaking up the sun in Marbella with hubby Patrick Kielty and their lads, Milo and James. And we've found the exact one-piece she sported for the occasion. Looking every bit the glamourous TV presenter, 48-year-old Cat wowed in the sleek black costume during some paddleboarding with her son Milo. She shared a snap of the sweet moment on Instagram, and while the picture was from a distance, we've sussed out the exact cossie the mum-of-two wore for the occasion. Cat rocked the Evia Ruffle Swimsuit in classic black from celebrity-loved brand, Boden. Priced at £80, it's beloved by shoppers for its 'flattering' fit, boasting lightly padded cups and Powermesh fabric for a slimming effect. It caters to various figures, available in sizes 6-20 and offers both regular and long lengths, reports OK!. Boden's design turns the staple black swimsuit into a fashion statement with chic ruffles that have earned it rave reviews. One customer said: "Looking forward to wearing this stylish swimsuit to the beach this summer. The ruffles are a nice added detail. Great quality and fit." Some swimming costumes aren't good for much other than lounging by the pool, but the Boden number seems to be just as suitable for sunbathing as it is for water activities like Cat's paddleboarding. Another customer remarked: "This suit is so comfortable and stylish. I purchased the Navy stripe for spring break and it was perfect for both lounging, being active in the ocean/pool, and boating. The suit provides coverage without looking matronly. I am eyeing some of the new prints." In addition to the black version, the swimsuit also comes in tulip red and five summer-ready prints, including cherries and lemons, or a green and pink floral design. However, some wearers have complained that the costume is a bit too youthful. One four-star comment read: "Cute but made me look too young. This item fits a tad small. I'm 5'3 and 118 lb. It was cute, and fit well, but something about the ruffles and pattern just didn't fit my personality." Another person wrote: "This is a great swimsuit. It fits beautifully, is extremely comfortable, and is really flattering. I'm getting it in the black as well." Elsewhere, New Look is offering this Black Tummy Control Crinkle Textured Blanket Stitch Frill Sleeve Swimsuit for £23.24 in the sale, while the Black Waterfall Frill Plunge Tummy Control Swimsuit at Next is £38. But shoppers can also save on the Boden piece. The retailer is currently offering 15% off new styles with the code JM7D, which reduces the price to £68. It seems that Cat might still be daydreaming of sandy beaches after returning to This Morning this week donning Next's Black Hardware Detail Halter Top, priced at £39. It stirred a bit of controversy among viewers, with some suggesting it looked a tad too beachy for daytime telly. However, for those planning a seaside getaway this summer, Cat's outfit could be the ideal choice for lounging by the pool or beach. Shop her Next top here, or check out the Boden swimsuit here.
