Minecraft Movie breaks box office record as highest-grossing video game adaptation in opening weekend

Independent08-04-2025
Minecraft's first movie has smashed box office records, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation in its opening weekend.
The film, titled A Minecraft Movie, has earned an astonishing $163m (£128m) in its first weekend at the North American box office, surpassing the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros Movie by nearly $20m (£15.7m). The total global revenue now exceeds $313m (£245m), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite its commercial success, critical reception has been less enthusiastic. The Independent 's Clarisse Loughrey described the movie as 'underwhelming' and argued that 'as an adaptation, it's flawed from the ground up.' Nevertheless, fan enthusiasm and brand loyalty have fuelled the movie's widespread popularity, both in the US and abroad.
Minecraft, developed by Mojang in 2009 and acquired by Microsoft for $2.5bn in 2014, is the world's best-selling video game with more than 200 million active monthly players worldwide.
Anticipation for the big screen adaptation has been over a decade in the making, with early development beginning in 2014 and filming finally starting in January 2024.
The film features an all-star cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Orange Is the New Black star Danielle Brooks. Black's performance, in particular, has been praised by fans, prompting social media trends and viral content online.
The film's popularity has also led to chaotic scenes in cinemas, particularly in the UK. Multiple cinema chains have reported disturbances during screenings, primarily involving young audiences.
Footage shared across social media shows food and popcorn being thrown across the audience, along with loud shouting, some swearing, and general raucousness, with some people jumping out of their seats. Dozens of young people and children are seen laughing with their phones out as they capture the disorder.
One moment, which features prominently in the film's trailer, sees Black and Momoa confronted in a boxing ring by a cuboid Minecraft chicken, which is ridden around by another character.
'Chicken jockey,' exclaims Black's character, a reference to the video game that seems to be sending audiences wild. Several videos captured by fans show audiences chanting the line along with Black, before whooping and clapping loudly.
In one cinema in the US, police were called to quell the commotion after viewers refused to calm down. It has prompted REEL cinema in the market town of Fareham to issue a warning to cinema-goers.

Roblox parent petition calls for CEO to resign with over 100,000 signatures

The controversy around Roblox has accelerated via petitions, lawsuits, and investigations, as concerns grow around its child safety protocols. Roblox is be one of the biggest games in the world, alongside Fortnite and Minecraft, but it is also the most controversial. The online gaming platform has been frequently accused of exploiting children, while a report last year dubbed it an 'X-rated paedophile hellscape', following an investigation. Roblox has denied all the claims levelled against it, but the game is facing a new wave of problems which have snowballed over the past week. Legal issues for Roblox began with Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill, who filed a lawsuit against the Roblox Corporation on August 14, 2025. The lawsuit claims the platform facilitates 'the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana's children'. 'It's basically open season for sex predators on this app,' Murrill said during a press conference. 'Roblox is violating Louisiana law, and that's why we've filed this lawsuit.' The lawsuit is looking to prohibit Roblox Corporation from 'engaging in any activity in violation of [the] Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act', and to ensure 'Roblox has adequate safety features' to protect children on the platform. Roblox issued a lengthy statement to address the 'erroneous claims and misconceptions' around the platform, in response to the lawsuit. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. 🚨 BREAKING: Today I'm suing Roblox – the #1 gaming site for children and teens – and a breeding ground for sex to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators… — Attorney General Liz Murrill (@AGLizMurrill) August 14, 2025 'Every day, tens of millions of people around the world use Roblox to learn STEM skills, play, and imagine and have a safe experience on our platform,' the statement reads. 'Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue. 'No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ. We continuously work to block those efforts and to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.' However, this lawsuit isn't the only problem facing Roblox. A petition created by MrMhGaming has called for Roblox Corporation CEO, David Baszuki, to resign. At the time of writing, it has racked up over 112,000 signatures. 'Roblox is supposed to be a safe and creative space for children,' the petition reads. 'But under the leadership of CEO David Baszucki, that safety has been repeatedly compromised. 'Instead of prioritising the protection of young users, Roblox Corporation continues to allow harmful and exploitative behaviour to thrive on its platform — with little accountability or transparency.' The situation has attracted the attention of famous investigators too. As confirmed on X, journalist Chris Hansen, who is best known for hosting the hidden camera reality series To Catch A Predator, is investigating the scandal around Roblox. More Trending 'You may have heard that my streaming crime network TruBlu and I are investigating the exploitation of children on the popular gaming platform, Roblox,' Hansen said. 'It's absolutely true and we're deep into it. I've already interviewed law enforcement investigators and victims of this horrible activity.' He added: 'Will Roblox actually say anything about it? Will it make any changes? We're going to do our best to hold them accountable.' Launched in 2006, Roblox is a free-to-play platform primarily driven by user-created content and in-game purchases. It grew in popularity in the late 2010s, but concerns around its content moderation have led to it being banned in several countries, including Turkey, China, and Jordan. GTA 6's biggest rival is GTA 5 says analyst: 'It's wild times'

An analyst has discussed the modern gaming landscape and how it could affect GTA 6, as the same handful of titles continue to dominate. GTA 6 is guaranteed to be the biggest game of the year when it launches on May 26, 2026, but the big question is how successful will it be in the long term? If it follows the same path as GTA 5, the sequel could become the most financially successful entertainment product of all time. Despite coming out 12 years ago, GTA 5 (and specifically GTA Online) is still one of the most played games in terms of weekly active users, alongside the likes of Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and Call Of Duty. The ongoing nature of GTA 5 is reflective of the current gaming landscape, where a small handful of juggernauts are swallowing up all the attention, to the point where GTA 6's biggest competitor is its own predecessor. Speaking in an interview with industry analyst Mat Piscatella highlighted the problems developer Rockstar Games faces. 'You look at something like Fortnite,' Piscatella said. 'It's been, what, seven, eight years now that that thing's been the biggest thing in the world. Or Minecraft. And GTA 5 launched in 2013. It's still one of the top 20 best-selling games every single month. 'The biggest competitor to GTA 6 will be GTA 5. It's wild times to be trying to make new video games.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. While the outlook might be bleak for developers trying to make new games outside of existing IP, former Sony Interactive Entertainment president Shawn Layden highlighted the recent success of double-A titles, like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as a reason to be optimistic. 'I think the future is going to be a wider variety of games,' Layden told the outlet. 'I'm not worried about the future.' However, Piscatella makes a more alarming prediction, suggesting that the free-to-play model might become the 'baseline' for the industry in the decades to come, based on the habits of younger generations. 'The data is clear that the console buyer is becoming older and more affluent, and the younger generations are choosing more often to default to mobile or PC because of the ease of entry and because they already have the devices,' he added. More Trending 'So, I think eventually over time, we're going to get to the point where we more fully transition towards that free-to-play model as a baseline over the next, say, 20 years, 30 years.' There's a lot we don't know about GTA 6, like how much it will cost, but the key to its long term success will be GTA Online (or GTA Online 2 – Rockstar has said nothing about its online plans for the game). If the online suite in the sequel isn't as compelling as GTA 5's, Rockstar might have a battle on its hands convincing people to turn away from the title they've spent a decade investing time into. Even if it is functionally better it will inevitably have less content at launch, which could lead to many returning to GTA 5 after an initial honeymoon period. Based on the trailers though, all signs point to GTA 6 being a significant technical leap over its predecessor, which might be enough to supplant GTA 5 and keep itself in the conversation for the next decade to come.
