Matt O'Riley's Brighton future ‘uncertain' as Premier League rivals target Celtic hero just nine months after £25m move

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT hasn't even been a year since Matt O'Riley sealed a bumper exit from Celtic for £25million. But just nine months on from his megabucks switch to Brighton, the midfielder could be on the move again. He scored 18 goals in 37 Scottish Premiership appearances as the Hoops retained the league title in Brendan Rodgers' first season back as manager. O'Riley had been a revelation at Celtic Park following his £1.5million switch from third tier English side MK Dons back in January 2022 under Ange Postecoglou. His performances quickly caught the attention and by the time the summer transfer window came around last year, it looked like an uphill battle for Celtic to keep the fans' favourite at Parkhead. And so it turned out, as in late August, O'Riley sealed a Scottish record £25m-plus transfer to Brighton and he signed a five-year contract. The big move began in nightmare fashion for the Denmark international. He made his debut in an EFL Cup clash against Crawley the day after completing his move but lasted just nine minutes. A horror tackle resulted in O'Riley having to undergo ankle surgery and he wasn't able to return to action until November. He made his comeback in style, netting a late winner for the Seagulls in a memorable 2-1 win over Manchester City. All in all, however, it was a frustrating season for O'Riley. Matt O'Riley limps off just minutes into Brighton debut after horror Crawley tackle Despite returning to fitness, he failed to hold down a regular starting spot in Fabian Hurzeler's side. Carlos Baleba has been a first pick in the German boss' midfield, while January signing Diego Gomez has also slotted in since his arrival from Inter Miami. The likes of Yasin Ayari, Brajan Gruda and Jack Hinshelwood have also been used more regularly. That's meant O'Riley has largely been restricted to a substitute's role although he did mange a few more starts towards the end of the season, starting six of the last eight matches. O'Riley netted from the spot in the final day 4-1 win over Tottenham after coming off the bench. He's already been linked with an exit from Brighton this summer, with unnamed clubs from England, Germany and Italy credited with an ongoing interest in him. Now, Sky Sports claim that Everton are 'keen' on signing O'Riley should Brighton be willing to let him leave. The report says that there is 'uncertainty' surrounding his future but that the Seagulls also believe O'Riley can play a significant role next season. Meanwhile, Everton have also been linked with a move for Rangers star Mohamed Diomande. The 23-year old joined the Light Blues on an initial loan deal from Danish club Nordsjaelland in January 2024, before the move was made permanent last summer. Diomande is under contract at Ibrox until 2028. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Former Scots footie star accused of deliberately getting booked in gambling scam

Ex-Livingston star Keaghan Jacobs, 35, faces court over claims he intentionally earned a yellow card in a 2019 match vs Celtic to aid a betting scam. A former SPFL star is due to appear in court accused of deliberately getting himself booked in an attempt to cheat at gambling. Keaghan Jacobs, 35, is alleged to have picked up a yellow card on purpose while playing for Livingston in a Scottish Premiership league match against Celtic. He is said to have 'acted in a manner whereby he would receive a yellow card for the purpose of enabling or assisting others to cheat at gambling ' during the clash at his team's Tony Macaroni stadium on October 6, 2019. A second man, Conan McDiarmid, 40, is alleged to have placed bets – and arranged for others to take punts – on Jacobs getting a caution. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The case against Jacobs, from Edinburgh, and McDiarmid, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, called at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week. Proceedings against Jacobs were continued without plea to later this month. McDiarmid's lawyer lodged a not guilty plea. A trial date was set for later this year. The match involved in the alleged betting scam saw Livingston secure a 2-0 win, handing the Hoops their first defeat of the season. Jacobs was shown the yellow card by referee Willie Collum for a foul on winger Jonny Hayes as the game was coming to a close in the 95th minute. Jacobs is a South African national who had two spells with Livingston between 2007 and 2015 and again between 2017 and 2022. The star has played a total of 252 times for the West Lothian club and scored 23 goals. He has also turned out for South African club Bidvest Wits, Falkirk, Arbroath and is currently playing with Lowland League club Gala Fairydean Rovers. He is believed to have made football history when he played alongside his three triplet brothers – Kyle, Devon and Sheldon – in a Scottish Third Division match between Livingston and Albion Rovers in April 2010. The 2-0 victory in front of just over 600 fans is said to be the only time four brothers have turned out for the same professional senior team in the same match. McDiarmid played as a defender with a number of amateur clubs, including Edinburgh United and Whitehill Welfare, before he retired in 2020 and moved into management.

Aberdeen to back Jimmy Thelin as Dons chiefs plot fight on multiple fronts

Aberdeen plan to back manager Jimmy Thelin this summer in the transfer market as the Dons grapple with juggling domestic commitments with European football until Christmas. Thanks to winning the Scottish Cup final against Celtic on penalties last week, Aberdeen will enter the Europa League at the play-off round. Should they win, they will advance to the main phase of that competition but if they lose, they parachute into the Conference League. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad That scenario happened in the 2023/24 campaign under Barry Robson, with the Dons setting up glamour ties against PAOK, Eintracht Frankfurt and HJK Helsinki. However, their form back in the Scottish Premiership suffered, with Robson losing his job and Aberdeen missing out on top-six football. Jimmy Thelin has received backing throughout his time at Aberdeen. | SNS Group The same fate befell Hearts and not one but two head coaches in Steven Naismith and Neil Critchley this term. Aberdeen chief executive Alan Burrows and chairman Dave Cormack are aware the strain fighting on multiple fronts can have on the squad and know that depth is required. 'We've got European group-stage football to work towards now,' said Burrows. 'Aberdeen last year, Hearts this year ... the pitfalls of European group-stage football can be that it impacts your domestic season. You need to be ready for that: mentally, physically and having some depth. Aberdeen 'have spent a bit of money' 'Dave has said that we will look to support Jimmy. I think most Aberdeen fans would agree that Jimmy's had a fair bit of backing from the club already. We've tried to back him in year one, we've spent a bit of money. Hopefully playing in group-stage European football will allow us to keep doing that, given there's going to be a real increase in the volume of matches in the first half of the season.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Aberdeen have already brought in two new players in Australian winger Nicolas Milanovic and his compatriot, goalkeeper Nick Suman, who will play back-up to No 1 stopper Dimitar Mitov. However, players such as Jack MacKenzie and Jamie McGrath have left after their deals expired. Burrows is confident that the remodelling of the squad will take shape. 'We've got another couple just about in the tank,' continued Burrows. 'We've got a fair bit of work to do. There's no secret that there's guys out of contract, we've got loans, and the nature of a player trading model is that players will leave and come in. Aberdeen chief executive Alan Burrows. | SNS Group 'One of the advantages of winning the cup is that elongates pre-season. If there's going to be changes, it should in theory give Jimmy a bit more time to work with that squad. The work has been ongoing for weeks and months and hopefully we will start to see some of the results of that. 'Anyone who was humming and hawing over it, the fact you have the carrot of European group-phase football might nudge some over the line or attract someone into the reckoning.'
