TVK chief Vijay slams DMK, says ‘publicity sarkar has transformed into sorry model sarkar,'

Indian Express13-07-2025
Founder-chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, actor-politician Vijay on Sunday slammed the DMK regime over 'custodial deaths' and alleged the 'empty, publicity-model DMK sarkar has now got transformed into a sorry model sarkar.'
Addressing TVK's protest rally here, Vijay said the custodial torture victim Ajith Kumar hailed from an ordinary family and the chief minister apologised to the victim's family and it is appropriate.
Clad in black, Vijay held a placard that read, 'Sorry Vendam, Needhi Vendum (We want justice, not sorry).' The TVK chief asked whether 'Stalin said sorry' to the families of all the 24 victims of alleged custodial torture (which resulted in deaths) during the DMK regime, since 2021.
'Please say sorry to them all; also, did you give solatium to the families of all the 24 victims? Please provide solatium to them as well,' he said.
When the then AIADMK regime transferred the Sathankulam case (in which P Jeyaraj and his son J Benniks were allegedly tortured to death by police in 2020), Stalin had said that it was an insult to Tamil Nadu police, Vijay claimed.
The fledgling party's chief wondered if the DMK government, which days ago transferred the Ajith Kumar custodial death case to the CBI, has not caused the same insult and added that both instances were only the same.
Further, Vijay asked, 'Why are you hiding behind the CBI?', which happens to be only the puppet of the RSS and the BJP. It was because his party, the TVK has sought a court-monitored probe by a special investigation team and 'fearing' such a move, the DMK regime is hiding behind the union government.
The court has questioned the state government on several cases of 'atrocities', including Anna varsity girl student sexual assault and Ajith Kumar custodial torture.
'If the court has to intervene and ask questions for everything, then why are you there? what is the purpose of the government? and the office of the chief minister? Whatever may be the questions, there are not going to be any answers. The government may provide answers only if it had answers and it does not have any answers in this regard, he alleged.
'The maximum reply from you is sorry and the empty, publicity-model DMK sarkar has now got transformed into a sorry model sarkar,' he alleged, mocking at the DMK government.
Before the end of the 'inept DMK government's tenure,' it has to set right the law and order situation. Else, by joining forces with the people, 'we will make you do it,' Vijay said.
'Sarkar' (government) is a popular Vijay-starrer movie that was released in 2018.

2026 Tamil Nadu election a direct fight between TVK & DMK: Vijay

MADURAI: TVK chief Vijay on Thursday positioned himself as the alternative to 'Stalin uncle' saying the 2026 assembly election would be a straight fight between his party and DMK. In a fiery 34-minute speech at TVK's second state conference at Parapathi, Madurai, Vijay accused DMK of hypocrisy. 'You ask women to call you appa (father), but there is no safety for women themselves,' he said addressing Stalin, before asking the crowd if DMK had fulfilled its promises. As they shouted 'no,' he said, 'Stalin uncle, hear the noise of the people.' On DMK's approach to BJP, Vijay accused the ruling party of shifting positions. 'When in opposition, they flew black balloons against Modi. Now, as the ruling party, they welcome him. Whenever ED raids take place, they rush to Delhi and the raids fade away. Stalin uncle, what uncle? It is very wrong uncle,' he said, and the gathered cadres burst into laughter. The TVK chief also posed pointed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking whether he had come to power for the third time 'to do good for the people or to plot something against the Muslim community'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo He pressed Centre to retrieve Katchatheevu island, withdraw NEET and resolve the plight of 'around 800 fishermen' arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. He accused BJP of hiding facts about the Keeladi excavations and depending on 'alliance partners without real people power' to extend its rule till 2029. Without naming AIADMK, Vijay said BJP was using the party once nurtured by M G Ramachandran as a 'backdoor to enter Tamil Nadu'. He said that even that party's cadres were upset with their present state. TVK, he said, would be a 'truly secular party' that would never have any hidden tie-up with BJP. He added that alliances under TVK would give equal power to partners. Indirectly addressing critics, Vijay said, 'A lion comes to the ground only to hunt, not to pass time. Even if it is single, it will be the king of the jungle. It is not just a description but a clear declaration.' He greeted his cadres as 'lion cubs' and described TVK as an 'army of common people.' Vijay said TVK had already created 'ripples' in state politics. 'Many said I will not enter politics, then that I will not get support, then that I cannot conduct a conference. Now they say I cannot win elections. They also say this crowd may not translate into votes. To those analysts, I say — this crowd is not just support, we have already entered every household in the state.' He emphasised that the safety of women, children and the elderly would be TVK's top priority, and pledged welfare measures for youth, farmers, labourers, weavers, fisherfolk, the disabled, elderly and transpersons. Amid cheers, Vijay made a surprise announcement, saying he would contest from Madurai East constituency in 2026. After a short pause, Vijay named all the nine remaining constituencies and asked people to assume that he himself is contesting in all 234 assembly constituencies in the state. In a symbolic gesture, he sang an MGR song from the movie 'Enga Veetu Pillai', asking whether people could 'take the whip of politics' and use it against both BJP and DMK. Vijay concluded with a parting shot at stereotypes about actors in politics. 'Leaders such as Ambedkar, Kamaraj and Nallakannu were defeated by politicians, not by cinema actors. Not all politicians are knowledgeable, and not every actor is an idiot,' he declared, drawing loud applause.

Will Tamil public bless this hero with‘ Vijayi Bhava' in 2026?

Tamil Nadu politics refuses to severe its umbilical cord with the film industry. 25 years into the new millennium, it looks like once again attempts are made to rewind the time zone to 1977. That was when a top cine star – M G Ramachandran - upstaged an established, cadre-based regional party- Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)with his break-away faction – Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) – in record time after its birth and captured power to rule the Dravidian state unchallenged for 13 years. At the time of writing, Joseph Vijay, known as 'Thalapathy' among his fans has just held his second mega political meeting in Madurai, the city which has seen epoch-making changes happening in state politics. After his seniors, Rajinikanth, who quit the heat and dust of 'rajniti' quoting ill health and Kamal Haasan ending up seeking support of DMK (for a Rajya Sabha seat) whom he set out to vanquish, all eyes are now on Vijay, a massive, successful matinee idol who has carved his niche in Tamil cinema in a span of three decades and more. An appraisal of Vijay's role in taking up a political career seriously will have to take into account his first announcement made in February 2024. The same year, in Vikravandi, he held his maiden political meeting in October. Though it was widely reported upon and speculations gained ground about what his ideological path would be, none gave it much thought as elections were far away then. Now, it is no more the case. Summer 2026 is just eight months away and the political scenario is hazy, given the complex alliance sewed together between BJP and AIADMK on the one end and the posturing by smaller parties before DMK on the other. By announcing that the forthcoming polls would be a direct clash between his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the ruling DMK, Vijay seems to have made his fans clear about what they should be doing to promote their party aggressively. Interestingly, the decorations at the venue played up MGR and the actor himself seems to have reserved special attention to shower encomiums on him and his rule in Tamil Nadu. This can only mean for the enduring cinema appeal among the Tamil population, a new star is attempting to woo the fans or supporters of AIADMK, at least those of whom who are not happy with their outfit joining hands with the saffron party. From the manner in which his 'Maanadu' was received with tremendous public support, Vijay can take heart that he can carry on his political battle with zeal and commitment. Observers of the state political arena would not have missed the strong response to another popular cine hero, Vijaykanth, who started 20 years ago from the same city, with an equally thunderous welcome, as he set about announcing his party to be an alternative to the existing political duopoly. After a few political flip-flops and opportunistic alliances with rival parties, his party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam – DMDK- is virtually extinct after the hero himself passed away, nearly two years ago. Like Vijay, Vijaykanth too was in his early '50s then, ready to sacrifice his cine career for a long innings in politics. The outcome is too well known to be repeated. Tamil Nadu will await for concrete steps from the new party to make them convinced that TVK may after all try and alleviate their miseries, an enduring legacy for decades.

TVK resolutions focus on caste killings, jobs, safety, environment

1 2 3 4 5 6 Madurai: Facing criticism for its silence after the recent caste killing of dalit youth Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli, TVK president Vijay brought the issue to the forefront at the party's second state-level conference in Madurai on Thursday. One of its key resolutions called on TN govt to enact a separate law to tackle caste killings. "Tamil Nadu, which once stood as a moral compass for social justice, now hangs its head in shame," the resolution said. "Even high court expressed concern over the rise in caste killings. Govt's refusal to enact a separate law, despite having the authority to do so, is unacceptable. TVK calls for immediate legislation to protect all communities and prevent such killings," it added. With more than four lakh govt posts lying vacant, the resolution said lakhs of youth are being denied fair employment. It urged DMK govt to abandon outsourcing and fill vacancies only through TNPSC and other recruitment boards, with priority for Tamil-medium graduates. Govt's failure to prevent violence against women and children, as well as unchecked drug peddling near schools and colleges, created a climate of fear and insecurity, said a resolution. TVK reiterated its opposition to the proposed airport at Parandur, saying the project threatened more than 5,700acres of fertile farmland and 13 water bodies crucial for drinking water and flood protection in Chennai and Kancheepuram. The party urged Union and state govts to find an alternative site. TVK demanded free and fair elections, criticising large-scale deletions in electoral rolls, particularly in Bihar, warning of "a similar special summary revision" in TN. The party further condemned Union and state govts' failure to protect TN fishermen and called for recovery or leasing of Katchatheevu islet (ceded by India to Sri Lanka in 1974) for 99 years to ensure a lasting solution.
