Iraq: Fire engulfs new shopping mall, killing dozens – DW – 07/17/2025
A fire at a five-story shopping mall in eastern Iraq has killed at least 61 people, including children, according to a statement from Iraq's Ministry of Interior on Thursday morning.
Photos on social media show the Corniche Hypermarket Mall, in the city of Kut in Wasit province, engulfed in flames on Wednesday.
Most people died from suffocation, the government statement said. Among the dead, 14 charred bodies remain unidentified, it said.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani visited the site Thursday morning, after having ordered an immediate investigation to "uncover any shortcomings."
Residents in the neighborhood joined firefighters in battling the blaze at the mall that had only opened a week earlier.
The Ministry of Interior said that civil defense teams rescued at least 45 people who were trapped in the building due to the fire.
While the cause of the blaze was not yet known, the initial police report suggested the fire began on the floor where perfumes and cosmetics were sold, the Reuters news agency reported.
As of Thursday morning, rescue teams and other emergency personnel were still at the scene.
Provincial Governor Mohammed al-Miyahi said that legal cases were filed against the building owner and the shopping center owner, but did not specify the charges.
Al-Miyahi also declared three days of mourning, with people in the community sharing stories about losing their loved ones who had simply gone out to the mall to shop and dine.
While an official investigation is underway, officials and residents allege that a lack of fire safety measures in the building contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Poor building standards and a lack of enforcement of safety regulations hav presented a challenge to authorities.
In 2023, more than 100 people died after a fire broke out at a wedding hall in northern Iraq. The hall was covered with highly flammable Ecobond panels that violated safety laws.
In July 2021, a fire at a COVID-19 unit at a hospital in Baghdad killed more than 60 people.

Federal Prison Camp Bryan has little to no perimeter fencing and a lower staff-to-inmate ratio, whereas FCI Tallahassee has double-fenced perimeters fencing and more prison staff on site. Victims of Epstein and Maxwell have condemned Maxwell's move to a lower-security prison. "Ghislaine Maxwell is a sexual predator who physically assaulted minor children on multiple occasions, and she should never be shown any leniency," Annie and Marie Farmer and the family of Virginia Giuffre said in response to the transfer. They said the transfer "smacks of a cover up." Annie and Marie Farmer have accused Epstein of molestation, whereas Giuffre has alleged that she was sex trafficked by Epstein to Prince Andrew, a member of the British royal family. Giuffre took her own life in April. The transfer occurred after Maxwell recently met with US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. It comes as Maxwell is appealing her prison sentence and the US President Donald Trump's administration is facing criticism over its handling of the Epstein case. Last month, the US Justice Department said that Epstein did not have a "client list" and that he did indeed kill himself in his prison cell in 2019. Both of those claims were met with skepticism from many Trump supporters, who urged the Trump administration to release more information on the Epstein case. The scandal regarding the so-called "Epstein files" is of a personal nature for Trump, who once was friends with Epstein. The disgraced New York financier had even said he was Trump's "closest friend" in recordings released by author Michael Wolff last year. A shady Telegram group has sparked outrage in China after sexually exploitative images of Chinese women were shared in a group chat with hundreds of thousands of users. A Chinese-language Telegram chat group named "MaskPark tree hole forum" shared images of women secretly taken or filmed in different locations. The Chinese state-run newspaper first reported on the group in mid-September, with the story being picked up outside of China in recent days. The group chat has more than 100,000 anonymous users in China and overseas, all of them are men, the newspaper said. Some users shared private images of their current or ex-girlfriends and female family members, including mothers and daughters. Some of the videos that had been secretly recorded with pinhole cameras in public spaces were being sold in the chat groups, the local reported. "My ex-boyfriend secretly took photos of me during sex, posted my private photos to the group without my permission and publicised my social media accounts," Reuters quoted an unnamed female victim, citing the . Thailand accuses Cambodia of violating border truce – DW – 07/29/2025
Thailand and Cambodia disputed whether an hours-old ceasefire was holding after the Thai army accused Cambodian forces of launching attacks. Meanwhile, a military-level parley has reportedly been postponed. Thailand's army on Tuesday accused Cambodiaof violating a ceasefire that came into effect from midnight following the deadliest conflict between the southeast Asian neighbors in over a decade. A statement from the Thai army said that there had been attacks by Cambodian troops in at least five different locations earlier on Tuesday. It added that Thailand's military had retaliated proportionately. "At the time the agreement took effect, the Thai side detected that Cambodian forces had launched armed attacks into several areas within Thai territory," Thai army spokesman Winthai Suwaree said. "This constitutes a deliberate violation of the agreement and a clear attempt to undermine mutual trust," he added. Cambodia's defense ministry dismissed the Thai claims of a ceasefire violation. "After the ceasefire became effective, there has been no armed conflict on all front lines. This is the firm determination of the Cambodian leadership to implement the ceasefire," the ministry's spokesperson, Maly Socheata, said in a statement.. Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai played down the clashes, stressing that there was no "escalation". Some 300,000 people were displaced in the fighting that went on for five days. On Monday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Phumtham agreed to an "unconditional" halt in the standoff. The truce talks were the result of a push from Malaysian Premier Anwar Ibrahim and pressure from US President Donald Trump.
