Self-Portrait links up with Jisoo again for AI pre-fall campaign

Self-Portrait is known for its campaign link-ups with famous faces and it's clearly happy with the two previous campaigns with K-pop star Jisoo as it's back for a third time.
The superstar Blackpink singer and actress is fronting the pre-fall 2025 campaign shot by Drew Vickers in Seoul, South Korea. The use of Vickers is interesting because he's become known for his atmospheric use of AI.
Called Dreams of Past Lives, the new campaign places Jisoo at the centre of a series of imagined, AI-generated backdrops. The company said the collection itself is 1960s-inspired but 'reimagined for today'. And the supporting campaign unfolds across scenes 'that feel both retro and futuristic — like memories of places that never quite existed. The result is nostalgic and futuristic, hyperreal and synthetic, with Jisoo flickering between dreamscapes'.
Han Chong, Self-Portrait's founder and creative director, said: 'We've always used our campaigns to tell stories – but working with Drew and this kind of technology let us blur the line between what's real and what's imagined. The AI wasn't there to replace anything, but to build new worlds for Jisoo to inhabit. It felt like the perfect way to reflect the mood of the collection: familiar but surreal, nostalgic but completely new.'
In the images she wears items such as a nylon windbreaker over a gingham bandeau and houndstooth mini skort. Plus there are pieces more traditionally associated with the label such as a white blouse in its signature lace styled with a cream denim beaded skirt and other key pieces.
Han Chong added of Jisoo: 'Even with everything she's achieved, there's still a sense of mystery about her, and I think that's what makes her such a compelling face for the brand. There's a natural creative rhythm between us that makes each campaign feel like a continuation of a conversation we're still having.'

What's happening? Labubu dolls, that's what. Creepy cute little monsters with fluffy bodies and razor sharp grins. Originally created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung for his picture book series "Monsters", they were turned into figurines in 2019 as part of a collaboration with toymakers Pop Mart. Since then, their popularity has skyrocketed — especially in bag charm form. Everyone wants one! Why are they in the news? Last week, Pop Mart decided to pull the toys from all 16 of its UK shops until June, citing "potential safety issues". Many fans have responded angrily — but only have themselves to blame. The announcement followed a fight that reportedly broke out in a London store, where people had queued overnight to obtain the latest Labubu editions. "People were shouting, basically saying there were no more Labubus left,' one customer told the BBC. 'I even witnessed a fight between a worker and a customer." What's driving this craziness? As is the source of most contemporary trends, we can blame TikTok. The trend took off after Lisa, a member of the popular K-pop band Blackpink, was seen with one on her bag. At the time of writing, there are 1.4M posts under #Labubu, with people excitedly sharing their collections, unboxings, and even crocheting their own versions. In an age where most things are mass produced and easily obtainable, Pop Art's blind boxes and limited edition drops are exciting in their spontaneity. How much are they? In the UK, they tend to cost anywhere between £13.50 (€16) to £50 (€59), although rare editions can go for even more. One of the main reasons for the recent chaos is re-sellers, who frantically buy up new drops purely to hike up the price, leaving genuine buyers out of luck and frustrated. Ok, but can we talk about the fact grown adults are getting so upset over toys? Sure, but don't you know we're in the midst of a plushie pandemic?! From Jellycats to Squishmallows — adults have become key consumers of all things cute. According to research group Circana, one in five toys and games are now bought by over-18s for themselves. It's a rapidly growing market known as 'kidults', and led by a mixture of things — like people having children later and overwhelming existential anxiety. The world is on fire, might as well buy some weird little guys to cope. But… Why are they so scary looking? That's their appeal: the combination of sweet and sinister. Another example of this is the hugely popular Sonny Angels — cherubic little figurines wearing themed bonnets and no pants. Sure, they sound whimsical, but if you look closely enough at those perfectly poised arms and sideways glances... They're plotting something. But it's often these subtly unnerving/bizarre elements of certain toys that make them stand-out; the expressions and outfits characterful and endlessly adaptable. The 45-year-old director said he was inspired by a news report about a Japanese "idol", as the starlets are known, who was sued by her management agency after breaking a "no dating" clause. Fukada cast former idol Saito Kyoko in the lead role of his feature "Love on Trial" which tells the story of a young performer who undergoes a similar ordeal. "I felt a deep discomfort, a real unease when I found out, and that's what made me want to look into the subject a bit and then turn it into a screenplay," he told AFP in Cannes. The film highlights the unequal relationship between management agencies and the idols, who are usually teenagers trained to become a mixture of pop star, online influencer and advertising prop. But the core of the film examines the more unusual demand that the women remain unattached and chaste -- in order for their older, male fanbase to project their fantasies. As the lyrics to the songs of Fukada's fictional five-member group "Happy Fanfare" make clear, the performers spend their time singing about the idea of falling in love. "The industry really encourages this kind of artificial love between fans and their idols," the director of "The Real Thing" and "Harmonium" explained. "As soon as an idol appears to have a romantic relationship with someone, it's well known that they lose a lot of popularity." As well as selling merchandise, the women also offer their time for meet-and-greet events -- for a price -- at which fans can come to talk to them, hold hands, and take selfies. - 'Unusual job' - The activist director, who has previously spoken out about sexual harassment and the Japanese film industry's over-reliance on manga adaptations, believes the J-pop industry reflects the prejudices of Japanese society. "There is a lot of prejudice and gender discrimination towards women in our patriarchal system," he said. "We tend to believe that women must be pure, untouched and submissive." As his film makes clear, many of the stars themselves are happy to encourage this image in pursuit of fame and wealth. "I met idols who are still active. Some believe that the ban on romantic relationships is a problem. Others think it's normal because it's a very unusual kind of job," he said. He hopes his film, which is set for release from May, will spark debate in Japan. "I tried to make a film that could bring out each person's perception of gender, love, freedom, and issues of discrimination," he said. © 2025 AFP
