
‘I feel equally rooted in bhangra and hyperpop, queer anthems and Sufi poetry': Pakistani star Ali Sethi on his defiant debut album
This is something the 41-year-old Pakistani-American singer, songwriter and composer hopes to create himself. Though he's also a writer – be that his acclaimed 2009 novel, The Wish Maker, or contributions to publications such as the New Yorker – music became somewhere Sethi could be accepted, especially as a queer person growing up in Lahore. 'I think music has this shamanic function in south Asian culture,' he says, 'where things you cannot say in lay language you say in the love language of music.'
Sethi's stratospheric, shiver-inducing voice dissolves cultural divides. Take Intiha, his sublime 2023 experimental album of Sufi poetry with Chilean-American musician Nicolás Jaar, or 2022's Pasoori, a bombastic raga-meets-reggaeton track which has surpassed a billion streams on YouTube Music, making it easily the biggest song to come out of Pakistan this century. When we speak, Sethi is about to release his debut solo album, Love Language, which builds on Pasoori's thundering, Technicolor global pop. Working with producers like Brockhampton's Romil Hemnani and Colombian musician Juan Ariza, it's exuberant and almost oversaturated, flecked with 00s R&B, Bollywood, drill rap, slinky flamenco, even a skit on the children's game 'akkad bakkad', all of it underlined with hallmarks of north Indian classical.
Not everyone is pleased. Sethi trained under two of the greats of classical music, Ustad Saami and Farida Khanum, and his initial career was in that more traditional world; some fans yearn for 'the old Ali Sethi'. Though he's adamant about using south Asian ragas rather than western chord progressions to inform the melodies for his songs, Sethi recounts how even the esteemed Ustad Saami asked him whether his music lately is fusion or, simply, confusion. 'But I think in today's completely monstrous world, what could be a better reflection than confusion?' Sethi laughs.
The work of Pakistani musicians, including Sethi, has been banned and removed from streaming services in India, where fans are forced to access the music via VPN due to escalating tensions between both countries. 'If you're looking at it from the point of view of ideologues, music is the one thing that has kept the populations of India and Pakistan deeply connected to one another,' he says. 'Every time the walls go up, the borders get re-erected but some song slips past, and there's an instant [release of] fellow feeling … this unspoken connection.'
The brief outbreak of conflict between the two nations earlier this year has worsened the cultural divide. The opening track on Sethi's album was initially a duet with a well-known Bollywood singer, but a film industry body threatened that any Indian artist collaborating with a Pakistani artist would be blacklisted. The song is now censored, cut through with screams and distorted industrial textures. Sethi has also been unable to get a visa to enter India in nearly a decade. 'Ever since I started releasing music, my biggest audience has been in India, and it's the one place I've not been able to go,' he says.
He wryly notes that the themes of 'forbidden love' he explores in his music are 'already in place' thanks to the travel ban. Inspired by Pakistani revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Sethi's lyrics read like love songs, but they're layered with double-meanings about ethno-nationalism, Islamophobia, war, queerness and exile. On Bridegroom, he subverts a 13th-century qawwali sometimes sung at weddings, his untethered, gliding voice delivering coy lyrics that translate to 'don't ask about my husband'. This follows 'pretty rigorously orchestrated fake news' two years ago, falsely claiming Sethi and his partner, the Pakistani painter Salman Toor, had breached local law and married.
He didn't know how to react, until the answer came in the form of this song. 'I realised the appropriate response is to troll them back with what they think of as semi-sacred music, saying, 'I refuse to give up my traditions.''
Sethi may laugh in defiance, but his words are tinged with sadness. 'These last few years have been a whirlwind, not always in the nicest ways,' he says. 'There's a lot of angst and despair, a lot of ruing the loss of a milieu, the loss of home – but also revelling in new homes, temporary shelters, finding community with other musicians in places like Los Angeles, London and New York.'
He says the success of NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is revitalising; the way he 'squares that distance between all these different communities.' Love Language, then, is Sethi's attempt at the same: a 'diary of displacement' with the accompanying tour set to be 'a variety show for the end times'. Mainly, he wants the music to be a refuge, and to capture his and his audience's multiplicities.
'I'm hoping it comes across as a work of synthesis rather than a work of assimilation,' Sethi says of his album, an attempt to make hybrid music without 'simplifying or diluting' any of its constituent parts. 'I feel equally rooted in Punjabi bhangra and hyperpop, equally conversant with queer club anthems and Sufi poetry; and, actually, I see all these connections all the time, because they dwell within me.'

Work your erk'n'jerk! Inside the UK club nights for dancing, not social media posing
I'm the only one who's not been in. The floor's open. Someone goes in for their second round, buying me some time with a two-step, a dribble and out. Another agonising pause. I know Tiger's looking at me – he's not going to let me get out of this, so I jump in. I'd been working on my running man, but the two‑step is my anchor now. And I just keep two-stepping. It's fitful, it's awkward, it's out of time – but I'm doing it, footworking in the middle of a dance circle. 'You're part of the culture now!' beams Tiger, as I jitterbug back to the sidelines. It's my first time attending a footwork practice session, led by the instructor Tiger in the foyer of Central Saint Martins art college in London. I heard about these sessions through an 'open decks' night dedicated to footwork, the furiously fast and bassy style of dance music from Chicago. The dance actually came before the music, but that part of it has never really caught on in the UK. Times are changing, though. Not since flailing to dubstep at university have I felt so enthused by the dancing side of club music. From the twist in the 60s to the migraine skank in the 00s, music fans have always loved to throw down moves – and surely the point of going to a nightclub is to dance. But nowadays that's often far from the case. Phones have turned clubs into vehicles for social media content, with some DJs becoming exasperated at the way that punters – who often stand still, filming big-screen visuals, or each other – seem more interested in documenting the night than dancing. This can create a vibe-killing feedback loop. 'I asked some friends why they don't dance in public and some said because of the fear of being filmed,' the rapper Tyler, the Creator recently posted by way of introduction to his dance‑focused new album, Don't Tap the Glass. 'I thought: damn, a natural form of expression and a certain connection they have with music is now a ghost.' In Britain, it's also getting harder to go out clubbing at all, due to the cost of living crisis and a drop in the number of nightclubs – about 400 have closed in the past five years. So, across the country, grassroots dance communities are countering this by creating safe spaces for people to learn new moves and feel emboldened to share them on the dancefloor. 'People need something to do on a night out,' says Eve Burgsoul, who co-runs Bristol Northern Soul Club with Levanna McLean. Dancing, she says, means 'they are in the experience'. Northern soul spun out of the Twisted Wheel nightclub in Manchester in the 60s before spreading to Wigan, Blackpool and Stafford in the 70s and generating an entire subculture of British people spinning, dipping and doing other elaborate moves to obscure, uptempo US soul music. It survived as a hobby for older generations, but Bristol Northern Soul Club, and other nights like it, have galvanised a younger crowd. Their videos of McLean shuffling to soul classics and pop songs on the streets of Bristol have been such a hit that they have gained traction worldwide. 'We're viral in Russia because our dancing got remixed to a techno song,' says Burgsoul. Clubbers at Bristol Northern Soul Club nights learn the basics of keeping time and focusing on their feet. Knowing even some rudimentary moves means that 'rather than standing there with a drink, waiting for someone to talk to you, you've got something to do', says Burgsoul. 'You feel invested in the event,' adds McLean. Learning to dance opens you up to whole new communities – something those in the ballroom scene know intimately. In the US, ballroom culture has provided solidarity for Black and Latin LGBTQ+ people since the 60s; the dancer Les Child formed the first British vogue collective, the House of Child, in the 80s. These houses can serve as surrogate families for community members estranged from their biological relations, as well as teams that perform for renown and cash prizes. Vogue is an integral feature of these balls. It's a sharp battle dance consisting of five basic elements: spins and dips, duckwalk, catwalk, hands and floor. Smily discovered ballroom after he was disowned by his family at 17 and happened upon a vogue class at Studio 25 in Manchester, hosted by the ballroom dancer and Manchester Ballroom Community (MBC) founder Sacha 007. Smily immediately took to the acrobatic style. 'Voguing was a wholesome release of dopamine for me,' he says. 'I channelled my energy into every move and people enjoyed it. Eventually, I went on to walk in Paris.' Smily now runs MBC and hosts open sessions where newbies pay to learn the basic elements of vogue. MBC has a large pool of beginners keen to walk balls, but nowhere for them to perform, since most vogue events happen in London and many can't afford the trip. 'Manchester definitely needed more queer, trans, Black and POC [people of colour] spaces,' says Smily. With money from the workshops and other fundraising events, MBC has managed to throw a few balls in Manchester and now hosts one of the city's first OTA (open to all) vogue nights. Partnerships such as these are bringing dance out of the studio and into public spaces. In London, the footwork promoter 160 Unity has joined forces with After Werks, the class I attend, resulting in dance circles at the front of their last two nights in London. 'The footwork crew has brought something to dance music that I've yearned for so long: communal dance,' says Chris Kanski, a 160 Unity punter and After Werks regular. He arrived at After Werks from a background in hardcore punk and metal. 'Footwork nights give that spontaneous expression and that challenge that's so special in hardcore punk. There are eyes on you and people are looking both at what you express and what you can do.' The same feeling is evident in the UK jazz dance scene, which took off in the 70s as teenagers began leaping, stomping and skipping to the sounds of acid jazz and Latin fusion at clubs such as Chaplins in Birmingham. The craze migrated south, where DJs such as Gilles Peterson turned London into the new mecca of UK jazz dance with his nights at Dingwalls. It endures today. At the Bath House community building in London, I witness the jazz dance luminary Masumi Endo work tirelessly to encourage bystanders on to the floor for Jazzy Sport London's No Nation Under a Groove party, which brings together three dance communities: After Werks, Epic Jam (breakdance) and Footnotes (jazz dance). By the end of the evening, the dancing spirit has reached such a fever pitch that the whole room is moving together in one bubbling cauldron of styles. 'There's nothing like playing to an active audience who are sweating their tits off and really feeling the music,' says Jayson Wynters, who DJs at the jazz dance event Come Sunday at Hockley Social Club in Birmingham alongside Nick Schlittner. One of Come Sunday's main challenges has been holding on to their young dancers, many of whom move to London in search of job opportunities in TV and theatre. But in they have a loyal, 32-year-old regular who relishes the intergenerational side of the event. 'It has lineage,' he says. 'You're entering a community that's larger than that moment in time.' Back at the footwork dance class, Tiger remembers how bouncers and DJs would welcome him into his local nightclub in Muswell Hill, London, where he went weekly to practise his moves. That was 18 years ago; he wonders whether 'DJs and promoters should reach out to dancers more'. When they do, the effect can be intoxicating: earlier this year, he was the star of the night when the footwork legends RP Boo and DJ Spinn played at Venue MOT in south London. 'If I'm doing the Biz Markie' – an old-school hip-hop move – 'next to you in the club, I can show you what to do,' he says. And while he believes dancers are inherently free in expression, he argues that knowing some basic moves allows you to have the most amount of fun on the dancefloor. He's not wrong. My two-step has kept me occupied during an average club night on Rye Lane in Peckham, London, and my erk'n'jerks – another footwork move – have left me exhausted and elated after a particularly sweaty set in Bermondsey. My dancing isn't going to save a club from its financial woes, but if promoters can partner with grassroots collectives, organise workshops and encourage dancers to the floor, they can benefit from an integral aspect of club culture that people, old and young, are clearly craving. 'People love it,' says Kanski. 'It's real, it's raw, it's chaotic, it's beautiful.' Come Sunday Monthly Jam is monthly at Hockley Social Club, Birmingham. US performers seek safety and risk at the Edinburgh Fringe
Aug 8 (Reuters) - Eddie Jen, a drag queen from San Francisco, wants to show that "America still fights for kindness", while Abby Govindan, a U.S. stand-up comic of Indian heritage, aims to convince audiences Texas is not what they think. The performers are among those who make the number of U.S. acts at this year's Edinburgh Fringe the highest in at least a decade. The Edinburgh International Festival, held every August, was established in the aftermath of World War Two with the goal of using culture to heal divisions. It immediately spawned an unofficial Fringe that became bigger than the original festival, attracting thousands of more maverick performers in venues across the city. This year's Fringe includes productions from Armenia to Zimbabwe, organisers say. The percentage of U.S. acts is 12.1%, compared with 11.1% last year and 6.1% in 2014. No earlier data is available. British acts have decreased to 69.8% of the total, from 71.2% in 2024, and 81.5% in 2014. Performers have said high costs, especially for accommodation, are a deterrent. For U.S. artists, that can matter less. Their numbers had already risen as producers chose Edinburgh to test the appeal of musicals as a cheaper alternative to Broadway. U.S. President Donald Trump, who changed laws on diversity after he returned to office in January, making many artists anxious about freedom of expression, is a factor. Govindan said she would have brought her show "How to Embarrass Your Immigrant Parents" to Edinburgh "regardless of politics". Her aims include doing justice to Texas, which she says is "commonly misrepresented as white and racist". "Houston, my hometown, is the most diverse city in the country," she said. Jen is also keen to get beyond stereotypes with "Seeking a Pen Pal for the End of the World" that tells the story of an immigrant drag queen exchanging letters with his high school English teacher - a retired, white, Republican woman from Bountiful, Utah. "When Trump was re-elected in November, I wanted to let the world know that America still fights for kindness," Jen said. The number of Canadian acts at the Fringe has hovered around 1% for the last decade. Connor Malbeuf, who has lived in the United States for eight years, says the Fringe is "a safe space" for his show "Sorry: A Canadian's Apology for America". "There's no better neutral ground to comment on the absurdity, political landscape, and poke the bear without the bear threatening the possibility of deportation," he said. For Govindan, whose comedy is established in the United States, Edinburgh amounts to healthy risk-taking. "Being here is really pushing me out of my comfort zone in a way that is undoubtedly going to make me a better performer and comedian," she said.

Forget kittens: The pet of choice for Japan's children is a humble bug
While cuddly cats and playful puppies are common companions globally, in Japan, the humble bug holds an equally cherished place as a pet. Indeed, insects boast a profound cultural heritage, woven into Japanese life from the Heian era classic "The Tale of Genji" to popular modern-day manga and animation like "Mushishi", which features insect-like supernatural creatures. The Japanese appreciate the glitter of fireflies let loose in the garden or the gentle chirping of crickets kept in a little cage. Owners can feed them watermelon, though specialised jelly pet food is also widely available in stores, where the insects themselves are sold. More esoteric varieties can command prices of up to 20,000 yen (£105). Here, these crawling and buzzing critters transcend the scientific realm of entomology. Celebrities openly boast about their fascination with bug-hunting as a hobby, much like a Western film star might discuss their yacht or golf score. The bug as companion is an essential part of what's observed, enjoyed and cared for in everyday life, reflecting a deeply rooted celebration of humankind's oneness with nature. 'They are so tiny. If you catch and study them, you're sure to discover something new,' says Munetoshi Maruyama, professor of bioenvironmental sciences at Kyushu University, whose fascination with bugs began as a child, like many Japanese. 'They are so beautiful in shape and form.' One thrill that comes from studying insects is discovering a new species, simply because there are more than 1.2 million known kinds of insects, far more than mammals, which translates to a lot of undiscovered ones, said Maruyama, who has discovered 250 new insect species himself and shrugs that off as a relatively small number. Japan differs from much of the West in encouraging interaction with bugs from childhood, with lots of books written for children, as well as classes and tours. 'In Japan, kids love bugs. You can even buy a net at a convenience store,' he said. 'It's fantastic that bugs can serve as a doorway to science.' The fact some insects go through metamorphoses, transforming from a larva to a butterfly, for instance, adds to the excitement, allowing kids to observe the stages of a life span, Maruyama said. Tracing the movement of bugs can be a way to study global warming, too, while so-called 'social insects,' like bees and ants show intelligence in how they communicate, remember routes to find their way back to their nests or burrow elaborate underground paths as colonies. Because bugs carry out important functions in the ecosystem, such as pollinating crops and becoming food for birds and other wildlife, human life isn't ultimately sustainable if all bugs were to disappear from earth. The love affair with bugs was clear at an exhibit in Tokyo, aptly called 'The Great Insect Exhibition,' running through the end of this month at the Sky Tree Tower, where crowds of children gathered around trees inside indoor cages so they could observe and touch the various beetles. One kind of rhinoceros beetle known as Hercules, which originated in the Caribbean but is now also found in Japan, is reputed to be the biggest beetle on record, although it's just several inches in length. Its back coat is a shiny khaki color, though such shades change depending on the season. The other parts, like its horn and delicate but spiky legs, are dark. 'We want the kids to feel the emotions and joy of actually touching the insects here. That's really positive for the workings of a child's brain,' said Toyoji Suzuki, one of the event's organizers, who insisted everyone, including adults, touch the bottom of the beetles' horns and wings to feel how surprisingly soft and fluffy they are. Four-year-old Asahi Yamauchi, who was at the exhibit with his grandmother and getting his photo taken inside a special installation that made it look like he was inside a beetle, loves bugs as much as he loves dinosaurs and has what he called a cute beetle as a pet at home. 'My friend had one so I wanted one,' he said.
