Three drivers clocked at over 100mph in an hour

Yahoo08-06-2025
A road policing chief said he was left "horrified" after three drivers were caught driving at over 100 mph on a stretch within the space of an hour.
Adam Pipe, from Essex Police, said one of his officers, who was carrying out speed checks on the A12 between Chelmsford and Witham, detected a total of 180 offences in just 60 minutes.
One motorist was clocked driving at 140mph, another at 121mph - and a third at 110mph. They will all receive court summons, the force added.
"It's totally unacceptable and is putting road users, as well as themselves, at risk of serious injury or death," Mr Pipe said.
"I'm horrified to see drivers reaching twice the legal speed limit on our roads," he added.
"We've seen a number of serious collisions on our roads this year, with people losing their lives."
He said the force was committed to reducing speeds and officers were patrolling the roads network 24 hours a day, to catch irresponsible drivers and keep people safe.
The patrol was carried out on Friday afternoon.
Mr Pipe said: "I urge people to think about the consequences of driving too fast and the irreparable damage that can be caused.
"Don't resort to speeding, it's never worth the devastating cost," he warned.
The fixed penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three points on a driving licence.
Drivers who exceed the limit by a significant margin can expect six points on a licence, as well as a court appearance and a driving ban, the RAC said.

Uber driver 'completely forgot' it was illegal to refuse passengers with guide dogs

AN Uber driver told a court he 'totally forgot' that it was illegal for him to refuse to pick up a customer with a guide dog. Khurram Mukhtar had driven away from the disabled woman who booked his car after refusing to take both her and her dog. He had his licence revoked by Bradford Council following the incident in March. And on Wednesday he appeared in court charged with failing to accept a booking from a person with an assistance dog. The court was shown a video of Mukhtar saying 'no, no, no' before pulling away after the woman who booked the Uber informed him it would be illegal for him to refuse to transport her and her dog. He admitted the charge, telling magistrates he had been 'confused' as to what the law was. Waseem Raja, prosecuting the case on behalf of Bradford Council, said Mukhtar, 44, of Colyton Mount, Allerton, had received a boking to pick up a passenger from the Yorkshire Building Society headquarters at Yorkshire House, off Rooley Lane. The booking was made at 4.38pm on March 4, and Mukhtar's Uber arrived around 10 minutes later. The woman who booked the Uber relied on a guide dog, which was present when the vehicle arrived. Mr Raja said: 'He simply refused to take the dog and refused to take the complainant.' The complainant began recording him on her mobile phone. This footage was shown to Magistrates, and showed the complainant telling Mukhtar 'It is against the law to say no to a guide dog.'. He replied: 'No, no, no. I can't allow dogs. You need to order a pet Uber.' She told him he would be reported, and Mukhtar drove off, leaving the woman and her dog without a way to get home. Mr Raja said the Council received a complaint about his behaviour shortly after and the taxi licensing service began an investigation. Bradford Magistrates Court When they interviewed Mukhtar, he said he had forgotten that it was illegal to refuse to transport a visually impaired person and their guide dog. Mr Raja added: 'She relies on taxis to get her about, and this incident left her feeling quite upset. She feels she was treated unfairly.' He pointed out that you can hear the complainant sigh as the taxi drives off. Mukhtar represented himself in court. When asked to explain his actions, he said: 'I was so confused. 'I forgot you have to take guide dogs. I totally forgot. I know taking a guide dog is very important.' He said he only realised what he had done was breaking the law the following day. 'I've suffered from this. I've got no job' When he was questioned as to why he left a vulnerable woman with a disability at the roadside, he said: 'I was too confused at that time.' Mr Raja pointed out that all drivers are provided with training, which included disability awareness and the responsibilities of drivers in dealing with disabled customers. He added: 'He was only licensed in 2022, so any training should be fresh in his mind.' Responding to this, Mukhtar said: 'I've had no guide dog jobs in that time. I was so confused at the time. I told my friend about it after and he said 'why did you not take that job?'' Magistrates were told that on top of any punishment they issued, Mukhtar's licence had already been revoked. After some deliberation, Mukhtar was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £32 surcharge. The case cost Bradford Council £1,360 to investigate and prosecute, but due to his limited income Mukhtar will only be required to contribute £150 towards those costs. What is the law about taxis and guide/assistance dogs? According to the Private Hire Vehicles (Carriage of Guide Dogs etc.) Act 2002, in the UK it is 'It is an offence for the operator of a private hire vehicle to fail or refuse to accept a booking for a private hire vehicle if the reason for the failure or refusal is that the disabled person will be accompanied by his/her assistance dog. 'A person who is guilty of an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to a fine.'

Snoring suspected drink-driver caught by police sleeping at wheel

Watch the moment that a suspected drink-driver was caught by police snoring at the wheel. Footage shared by Cambridgeshire Police on Thursday (14 August) shows officers approaching a stationary vehicle in the middle of the road, after a member of the public reported that they saw a driver stumble into a Mercedes van and drive away. Inside the van was Scott Tuite, 36, who can be heard audibly snoring before officers removed the keys from the ignition and woke him up. Tuite, of Baumgartner, Godmanchester, failed to provide a specimen of breath and was arrested. 'Beautiful Girls' rapper Sean Kingston sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for $1 million fraud scheme

An attorney for Kingston says he's "taking this as a learning experience and will continue moving forward in a positive direction." Sean Kingston, the rapper and singer behind songs such as "Beautiful Girls" and "Take You There," has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for his role in a $1 million fraud scheme. Kingston, whose real name is Kisean Paul Anderson, was convicted of wire fraud in March, following a federal trial. He and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were each found guilty on five counts related to the crime, and they faced up to 20 years in prison for each count. Turner was sentenced to five years behind bars in July. At Kingston's sentencing Friday, he apologized before U.S Judge David Leibowitz made his ruling and said that he had learned a lesson, according to the Associated Press. His attorney requested that Kingston, 35, be allowed to leave and to surrender at a later date for health reasons, but the judge refused and Kingston was taken into custody immediately. Kingston's defense attorney, Zeljka Bozanic, said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, "We respect the Court's decision and the judicial process. We are content that the Court did not go with the government's request of five years and sentenced Sean below the sentencing guidelines instead. It is important to note that most of the restitution in this case was paid back, even before these charges were brought." Bozanic added, "Sean is taking this as a learning experience and will continue moving forward in a positive direction. We are actively reviewing all available options, including potential appeals, to ensure his rights are fully protected."Kingston was arrested last year in Fort Irwin, Calif., following a raid of his South Florida home. In a subsequent indictment, federal prosecutors alleged that he and his mother "unjustly enriched themselves by falsely representing that they had executed bank wire or other monetary payment transfers as payment for vehicles, jewelry, and other goods purchased by the defendants, when in fact no such bank wire or other monetary payment transfers had been executed by the purported banks, and thereafter the defendants retained or attempted to retain the vehicles, jewelry and other goods despite non-payment. Through the execution of this scheme, the defendants obtained in excess of $1 million in property." As an artist, Kingston has released four albums, most recently 2022's Road to Deliverance, and has also collaborated with fellow musicians such as Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, and Chris Brown. In September 2022, he spoke with about the massive success he's experienced with "Beautiful Girls," which has been streamed more than 1 billion times on YouTube. "So blessed. It feels amazing," Kingston said. "It feels like I created something I always wanted to: timeless music. I am always going to create something with the intention that it's going to be around for ages and something that people are always going to remember. A billion views that's something a lot of people don't have, so it's definitely a great milestone." Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
