Nainital rape accused ‘expelled' by own community
Nainital: In a move aimed at restoring
communal harmony in Nainital
after it was rocked by riots following the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl by a 73-year-old man from the minority community, prominent Muslim leaders on Monday announced that the accused, Mohammad Usman, has been 'expelled' from the community. Usman, a Class D contractor with the public works department, was arrested last week after the girl disclosed the assault to her parents.
Community members have now pledged to bear the survivor's medical and educational expenses, and demanded a thorough investigation into the case.
Shoaib Ahmad, president of the Jamia Islamia Committee, said, "From today onwards, we have decided to completely boycott the accused. No one from our community will include him in any functions or social events. In Islam, we greet each other with 'As-salamu Alaikum,' which means 'May Allah have mercy on you and bless you,' but we have now decided that no one from our community will even offer him this greeting. For such a person, we cannot ask Allah to bless him. After this incident, our daughters are living in fear. Because of one individual, the peaceful environment of Nainital has turned into one of fear and tension and this is something we will not tolerate under any circumstances."
He added, "We came to know that the girl's financial condition is not good so we decided to take full responsibility for her medical treatment and education. This is not a Hindu-Muslim issue, it is a matter of humanity. And as a matter of humanity, it is our duty to help her."

Jamal Siddiqui, secretary of the Anjuman Islamia Committee, told TOI, "We consider this a violent and serious matter that stands above Hindu-Muslim narratives. Our own daughters live here, step out for education and work, and if such acts continue, no society can tolerate them. Nainital has always been known for its peace and harmony and such situations have never occurred here before. Those trying to disrupt this environment must face the harshest possible consequences."
Community leaders also called for immediate verification of outsiders living illegally in the area and extended full support for strict legal action against them.

Suspended cop held with cache of arms, ammo in Samastipur
Patna: A huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the residence of a suspended constable, Saroj Singh, in Sultanpur Ganga diara area of Mohiuddin Nagar in Samastipur district on Friday. The raid, carried out by the joint teams of Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and district police, turned violent when Singh's supporters opened fire at the police team. The constable and his four associates were later arrested by the STF for allegedly conspiring to kill two people. The STF also recovered an AK-47 rifle, an INSAS rifle with four magazines and 70 live cartridges, a rifle, and a double-barrel gun with more than 60 live cartridges from their possession. Cash and land-related documents worth approximately more than Rs 3.5 crore were also seized from several locations in Patna and Danapur, police said. Additional director general (ADG), police headquarters (PHQ), Kundan Krishnan said, "The STF received intelligence inputs about potential threats to two people—Prince Mukhiya and Naveen Singh— residents of Sultanpur village. Emu farm MD gets 10 years rigorous imprisonment for cheating investors Rs 7.61 crore
COIMBATORE: A special court for the trial of cases under the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (TNPID) Act in Coimbatore on Friday awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to the managing director of an emu farm for cheating 385 investors of Rs 7.61 crore. The court imposed a fine of Rs 7.89 crore on him. Guru alias Gurusamy, 46, was functioning as managing director of Susi Emu Farms (India) Private Limited at Perundurai in Erode district. The farm had opened branch offices in Salem, Coimbatore, Namakkal and a few other places in the state. In 2012, the firm offered various ponzi schemes to lure investors. It received investments of Rs 7.61 crore from 385 investors in Salem district, said K Muthu Vijayan, special public prosecutor for the TNPID court. The Salem economic offences wing (EOW) police registered a case against Gurusamy and two managers of the firm, Kathirvel and Suresh, under sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 5 of the TNPID Act in 2012. After hearing the prosecution and defence counsel arguments, special court judge M N Senthil Kumar delivered the verdict on Friday evening.
