Storm confident on Hughes as Pezet suffers fresh blow

Yahoo02-04-2025
Jahrome Hughes will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness for Melbourne as the Dally M Medal winner eyes a rapid recovery from a fractured hand.
Hughes has been named in the Storm's extended squad for Sunday's round-five trip to face Manly after missing last week's shock loss to St George Illawarra.
The New Zealand international only sustained the injury in the Storm's narrow round-three win over Penrith, but will potentially be available to take on the Sea Eagles.
"Jahrome has progressed quickly from his hand injury," football boss Frank Ponissi told the Storm's website.
"Our medical staff came to us earlier this week and reported that he might be available for Sunday.
"There's still some work to do before that becomes reality.
"Jahrome will need to train with the squad over the next two days and then a selection decision will be made on Saturday morning."
The potential return of the New Zealand international is offset by news rising Storm playmaker Jonah Pezet has suffered a fresh knee injury.
Pezet, 22, is seen as a long-term playmaker for the Storm but missed most of last year with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The luckless halfback will undergo stabilising surgery after failing to finish Saturday's NSW Cup for Storm feeder club North Sydney.
Pezet will miss up to three months of action.
"Jonah played 40 minutes for the Bears and did really well in his first game back in nearly a year," Ponissi said.
"I want to give Jonah a massive wrap for the manner in which he has managed this latest setback.
"He's remained positive throughout and will work hard to get himself back playing."

Liberty will look far different this time around for rematch with Storm

We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW The Liberty team that will take the floor Sunday against the Storm is not the same team that lost in Seattle last month. At the time, the Liberty were down three starters, including Sabrina Ionescu, who was a late scratch because of a neck issue. Advertisement With only nine active players, the Liberty had to mix and match lineup combinations. They registered a season-high 21 turnovers and missed several layups. But the Liberty managed to hang around the Storm for most of the game. 'What we have to take away from that Seattle game is that we were actually still very much within the game with losing three starters. We dropped the ball at the end,' forward Isabelle Harrison said Saturday. 'Obviously, Seattle is still a very good team. But we know how we can play.' Sabrina Ionescu missed the Liberty's first game against the Storm. Getty Images Advertisement The way coach Sandy Brondello sees it, the Storm didn't change over the two weeks. But the Liberty have. For starters, Leonie Fiebich is back from EuroBasket, and the kink in Ionescu's neck has been resolved. With the Liberty near full strength, execution will be key Sunday. They needs to shore up their pick-and-roll defense and prevent Nneka Ogwumike from getting into rhythm. They also must take better care of the ball. Advertisement Leonie Fiebich us back from EuroBasket. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Breanna Stewart said the Liberty also need to simplify their offense at times. 'We put ourselves in way too many step-up situations, knowing that they're trapping a lot and having a better outlet for those that are in traps and not overcomplicating it,' Stewart said. 'Similar to the last game against the Sparks, it's like taking what the defense gives us, not overcomplicating it.' Advertisement Jonquel Jones is getting 'better and better everyday,' but Brondello doesn't anticipate Jones to be back before the All-Star break, which is July 18-19. Jones has been on the mend over the past two-plus weeks since she aggravated a right ankle sprain. The Liberty initially announced June 21 that Jones would be out for approximately four to six weeks. But as Jones progresses, Brondello believes the reigning WNBA Finals MVP should be ready toward the earlier side of the team's initial projection. 'We still want [to look at the] big picture. Trying to get her build up,' Brondello said. 'So if we can get her back after All-Star break, that's still a win, isn't it? Because it was supposed to be in August.' Brondello didn't think there was a chance she would be coaching at the All-Star Game this season. The Liberty were third in the standings entering Thursday, and the second-place Mercury were playing the Wings. Advertisement After New York beat the Sparks, Brondello and the rest of her team were surprised to find out that the Mercury lost to the Wings. 'We weren't really planning on it,' Ionescu said. 'After the game, I was like, 'Oh my gosh. Sandy's coaching. Pack your bags, you're going to Indy.'' This will be Brondello's third time as head coach for the All-Star Game and first since 2018.

Expansion clubs unlikely to prise star duo from Storm

Melbourne representative stars Harry Grant and Xavier Coates have been touted as prime targets for expansion clubs but the Storm remain favourites to ward off poaching raids. Captain and hooker Grant, along with flying winger Coates, both spoke in Queensland camp about their current club in such a fashion that it dispelled the notion they would be leaving to join Perth Bears or the PNG-based club, who will enter the NRL in 2027 and 2028 respectively. Coates, 24, is an interesting one as he is a PNG Kumul international who was born in Port Moresby. The 19th NRL team, based in the rugby league-mad nation, would have the tryscoring machine at the top of their list of potential recruits. "I don't know how it's going to work to be honest. I know rugby league is a massive sport in PNG, it's the national sport, so getting a massive fan base around them won't be a trouble at all," Coates said. "It would be great to see a lot of players go to PNG and play for them. I don't know the whole gist of starting up an NRL club or anything like that, I am just focused on my time in Melbourne." Coates is off contract at the end of next year but AAP has been told the Storm are determined to keep him after he has become such a standout since his move from Brisbane in 2022. "I am happy with my time in Melbourne so I'm not focusing too far ahead," Coates said when asked if he intended to stay. "They are a great club and they have helped me out so much. They have done a lot for me." Xavier Coates is INSANE! 👏#NRLSharksStorm — NRL (@NRL) May 17, 2025 Bears coach Mel Meninga is well aware of Grant's class, having coached the 2022 World Cup winner previously for Australia. The Test rake is also off contract at the end of next year and the Storm are determined to ensure the 27-year-old goes nowhere. Grant said he was in no rush to get a deal done, with the Origin decider days away, but he has a strong relationship with all the movers and shakers at the club. "I haven't had those conversations too much yet. (Origin) is a period we have got to navigate," Grant said. "I wanted to get through the chunk of the season. We have good owners down at Melbourne, a good board, CEO and recruitment team that I have a good relationship with. "They are pretty comfortable with the conversations when they take place. "The Storm are such a good club with so many good people in it that it's a good environment to be in. "The longer you are in those environments the happier you are and the better footy you play."

WNBA star Skylar Diggins had herself a special night

Skylar Diggins will not likely forget Thursday's special performance anytime soon. The veteran knocked down a game-winning bucket to lift Seattle to a win on the road at Atlanta. Just hours before, Diggins was informed by the WNBA that she would be a reserve for the upcoming All-Star Game. The Storm guard is averaging just under 19 points per game with six assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals. Diggins had 11 points with three assists and two rebounds in an 80-79 win by Seattle over Atlanta, improving to 11-7 on the season.
