Grandmother charged with murder of two boys in Coonabarabran in NSW
A grandmother has been charged with the alleged double murders of two schoolboys in the north-west of New South Wales.
The brothers, aged seven and six, were found dead at a semi-rural property on the outskirts of Coonabarabran on Monday afternoon.
NSW police have charged the boys' 66-year-old maternal grandmother with two counts of murder.
She was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta bail court on Saturday, police said.
On Monday afternoon, two police officers went to the home after a message sent to the communities and justice department triggered an emergency response.
The officers broke into the house to find the boys' bodies in separate bedrooms, while their grandmother was nearby.
She was arrested and taken to hospital.
The woman was taken to Orange police station after she was released from the hospital on Friday.
A crime scene has been established, and officers from the Orana mid-western police district and detectives from the state's homicide squad have commenced an investigation.
Grieving members of a small rural community gathered to honour the lives of two boys on Friday.
A tree was to be planted for each boy, along with a ceremonial presentation of the karate students' yellow belts.
Warrumbungle Shire councillor, Kodi Brady, told AAP he hoped the vigil would help the community cope with the tragedy.
'It's a really important part, to take the community on the stepping stone of healing from the shock of the incident to another step forward in the grief and loss process,' he said.
'We're a small rural town, there is such a ripple effect ... it has impacted the whole community.'

Father and daughter killed in house blaze named as sister remains in hospital
A nine-year-old girl and her father have been identified by police as the victims of a fatal house fire in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire. Sohaib Ahmed, 38, and his daughter Manahal tragically died in the blaze that erupted in Russell Close on Sunday. An 11-year-old daughter of Mr Ahmed sustained serious injuries and is currently in hospital, where she is in critical condition. West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Councillor Darren O'Donovan, representing Dewsbury West and serving as chairman of the fire authority, stated that initial findings suggest "the fire started in the kitchen area and its ignition source was a tumble dryer". He added: 'There are a number of tumble dryers that have been recalled by a number of manufacturers. 'That's the tragedy: this was just a local family on a very regular street in Heckmondwike and a tragic accident has taken place. 'I think the community is rallying and pulling together to support other members of the family and friends that are affected by this.' Councillor Ali Arshad, who represents Heckmondwike on Kirklees Council as a member of the Kirklees Community Independents Group, said the family of the victims were 'absolutely amazing people'. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent four crews to tackle the blaze, which was reported at around 6am. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex of Kirklees CID previously said: 'We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives. 'Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since yesterday and we have been working to locate and support relatives of the victims both here and outside of the UK at what is clearly an awful time for the family. 'While our enquiries remain ongoing we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances regarding the cause of the fire and will be preparing a file for the coroner in due course. 'Our support for the family involved clearly also still continues.'

High school football star, 16, dead in New Jersey shooting as family mourn 'tragic accident'
A New Jersey community is in mourning after the shocking death of a 16-year-old high school football star who was shot in the head on Friday night. Xyere Brooks died in hospital two hours after being shot inside a Camden County house, in what his family have described as a tragic accident. Investigations are still ongoing into how the incident unfolded, but the victim's brother Manazh Tomkins told 6ABC: 'She put the gun to his head, and I guess she didn't expect it to go off. 'To make a long story short, the gun went off on my brother, and he's no longer here with us.' Brooks was a sophomore at Kipp High School in Camden, and was a star of the football academy with the likes of Rutgers and Syracuse already taking interest in him, according to his mother Antoinette Brooks. Speaking to local media, she added: 'These parents that are leaving their unsupervised teenage kids at home and not knowing what they may come into their homes with... there has to be a better way.' No criminal charges have currently been filed, and the identity of the girl mentioned by Brooks' brother has not been released by cops. Brooks' school also paid tribute to the 16-year-old in a post on Instagram, alongside which they posted a photo of him on the football field, and one of his first day at school. 'This week, our KCNA community is mourning and honoring the life of KHS Camden sophomore Xyere Brooks. 'Xyere began his journey with us at KIPP Lanning Square Middle as a fifth grader with a smile that could light up a room, a competitive spirit, and the kind of energy that brought joy to every hallway and dance battle. 'At @khscamden, Xyere was a committed student, a loyal and encouraging teammate and friend, and a standout football player whose talent and drive were evident to all who knew him. 'As a forever member of the LSM familia and a proud Titan, Xyere will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.'
