Chinese national arrested in Japan over alleged hit-and-run case that injured 4 boys

A Chinese national has been arrested in Japan after allegedly fleeing the scene of a drink-driving incident that injured four schoolboys – the second case this month involving a group of children struck by a car, raising fresh alarm over pedestrian safety in the country. Advertisement The 42-year-old suspect, identified as Deng Hongpeng, turned himself in to police in Misato, a city about 20km from central Tokyo, on Sunday morning – four days after the incident. Deng, a demolition worker and Misato resident, is accused of hitting a group of about 10 sixth-grade pupils with his grey SUV at around 4pm last Wednesday as they walked home from school. One boy suffered a fractured leg, police said. The incident took place in a residential area as the pupils were walking home from school. The group had been on a straight road with good visibility. There was no pavement, so they had been walking on the shoulder of the road, authorities said. Footage from a dashcam in another car showed two men getting out of the vehicle to check on the children. They then returned to their car and drove away as people gathered. Advertisement 'The driver got out and said 'Are you OK?' but had this smirking, careless attitude,' one witness told The Japan Times. 'The kids were repeating, 'He ran away, he ran away!' They'd even memorised the car's licence plate.'

Woman charged with alleged murder after grandsons found dead in small NSW town

A grandmother has been charged with the alleged double murders of two schoolboys in NSW's west. The brothers, aged seven and six, were found dead at a semi-rural property on the outskirts of Coonabarabran in north-west NSW on Monday afternoon. Police charged the boys' 66-year-old maternal grandmother with two counts of murder. She was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, police said. On Monday afternoon, two officers went to the home after a message sent to the communities and justice department triggered an emergency response. The officers broke into the house to find the boys' bodies in separate bedrooms, while their grandmother was nearby. She was arrested and taken to hospital. The woman was taken to Orange Police Station after she was released from hospital on Friday. A crime scene was established, and officers from the Orana mid-western police district and detectives from the state's homicide squad have commenced an investigation. Grieving members of a small rural community gathered to honour the lives of two boys on Friday. A tree was to be planted for each boy, along with a ceremonial presentation of the karate students' yellow belts.

A grandmother has been charged with the alleged double murders of two schoolboys in the north-west of New South Wales. A tree was to be planted for each boy, along with a ceremonial presentation of the karate students' yellow belts. Warrumbungle Shire councillor, Kodi Brady, told AAP he hoped the vigil would help the community cope with the tragedy. 'It's a really important part, to take the community on the stepping stone of healing from the shock of the incident to another step forward in the grief and loss process,' he said. 'We're a small rural town, there is such a ripple effect ... it has impacted the whole community.'
