Bandora p'yat denies voter list irregularities at Sanatan Ashram
Following Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief Amit Patkar's allegations of over 119 electors at a single address, which had raised suspicion, the Bandora village panchayat has refuted these allegations.
The panchayat claimed that the 119 electors are legally included in the voters' list and are permanent residents of Sanatan Ashram in its Ramnathi ward.
Sarpanch Ramchandra Naik said the Sanatan Ashram in Ramnathi has ample accommodation, and many devotees from across India reside permanently in the ashram for sadhana.
'Indian law allows any citizen to reside across India and enrol himself or herself in the voters' list at the particular area,' Naik told reporters at Ponda on Wednesday.
He said Patkar should avoid baseless allegations and verify who promoted vote banks in hutments across the state, warning that even Rohingyas might be staying there.
Deputy sarpanch Chitra Fadte, panch members Mukta Naik, Ajay Naik, Venkatesh Gaude, Reshama Mulla and Waman Naik had accompanied the sarpanch at the press briefing.

Bills, 'political morality' The stormy scenes in Parliament on Wednesday, following the introduction of three contentious Bills, reflect the deep political divide. The Opposition is right in saying that the proposed laws could open the door for political misuse. The idea of removing the Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, or Ministers facing serious charges may sound like a sound move to uphold morality, but it carries with it the danger of being used selectively against opponents. Such measures go against the jurisprudence of criminal justice and risk throwing constitutional safeguards to the wind. At the same time, the government's claim of ensuring probity in public life cannot be ignored. Ultimately, the health of Indian democracy lies not in hasty legislation or noisy disruptions but in measured debate, consensus-building, and protecting the federal spirit of the Constitution. Any law curbing the rights of elected representatives must be crafted with caution, lest it becomes a tool to destabilise governments. Rukma Sharma, Jalandhar, Punjab The new Bills pose grave threats to federalism and democratic governance. The 30-day custody rule could be weaponised to systematically target political rivals through prolonged investigations and strategic arrests timed just before elections. Without addressing systemic issues such as judicial delays, police misuse and false case registrations, these measures risk becoming tools of political vendetta. Maya to hold review meeting of BSP's UP unit in Sep first week
1 2 Lucknow: BSP national president Mayawati may hold a review meeting of the party's UP unit in the first week of Sept. Besides instructing the party members on the future course of action, she will review the constitution of booth, sector, and district-level committees of the party. BSP is revamping its organisation in UP in preparation for the 2027 assembly elections. This is the first state-wide organisational revamp since 2012, aimed at having its workers present at the booth level. BSP has been out of power in the state since 2012. "Most of the committees have been constituted, and those remaining will be formed in the next week, as directed by the leadership," said sources in the party. The party began the exercise to strengthen its organisation in UP in March this year. Since then, the state-level leaders have been constantly reviewing and monitoring the progress of the work through review meetings and field visits. The constitution of these committees is also meant to place more of the party's cadre into roles of responsibility within the organisation, to not only motivate them but also use their experience for the party's growth in the state. The caste equations at the booth, sector (five booths make a sector), and district level have been considered in filling up the posts in these committees. The fast-eroding vote base of BSP among Dalits, OBCs, and religious minorities (all of which comprise bahujans) made it difficult for the party to set up committees at the local level, as members often did not show up regularly for meetings or quit. Therefore, this time, the party has reached out to its own local-level functionaries, who have stayed loyal until now. By giving them organisational roles, the party wants them to mobilise voters in its favour at the ground level. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
