Compelling: Little Simz's Lotus reviewed
It's less common for the artist themselves to pose the question. On 'Lonely', the penultimate track on her compelling sixth album, London rapper and actor Simbiatu Ajikawo, who performs as Little Simz, interrogates the doubts and insecurities she felt while writing and recording this record. In doing so, she asks: 'I'm used to making it with [redacted]/ Can I do it without?'
The bleeped-out name is likely that of Dean Cover, aka Inflo, the influential writer, producer and multi instrumentalist whose contribution to Ajikawo's three previous albums, including the standout Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, winner of the 2022 Mercury Music Prize, is hard to overstate.
It was recently revealed, however, that she is suing her former friend and collaborator over an alleged debt stretching into seven figures. Which explains why Inflo is AWOL on Lotus. Instead, Ajikawo paired up with a new (male) cowriter, musical partner and producer, Miles Clinton James. To which one might reasonably conclude that she has answered her own question: 'Can I do it without?' Apparently not.
But this would be to misunderstand not only the essentially collaborative nature of the modern pop game, which is nowadays a tech-savvy team sport, closer to Formula 1 than showbiz, but also the fact that the backroom boys of the current era aren't puppeteers; rather, they serve at the behest of the headline artist. He commented: "My wheat got wet in the trailer last night as the convo(y) stopped me in the rain in chippy. I could have easily went on my way and got it in the shed without getting in the way." Images which circulated a few weeks ago suggesting Toto Wolff had visited Max Verstappen's private plane were fakes, but new shots of them on a yacht together are the real deal Max Verstappen was spotted paying a visit to Toto Wolff on the Mercedes chief's yacht this week. Both have spent time off the coast of Sardinia on holiday during the summer break in the Formula 1 season. It is not the first time that there have been suggestions that the two have met in secret while spending time away from the race track. It was only a few weeks ago that images circulated on social media supposedly showing Wolff stepping onto Verstappen's private plane, though it quickly became clear that those photos had been faked. However, new images have now emerged showing the two of them together on a luxury yacht. One of them shows Verstappen, topless and wearing a white towel with dark stripes on his lower half, stood next to Wolff dressed head-to-toe in white, in conversation and laughing. It is understood that these images are genuine and that Verstappen and Wolff have indeed met while holidaying together close to the Mediterranean island. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has also been spending some time in the area, though has not been pictured with Verstappen or Wolff. The meeting of the two comes after months of speculation that Verstappen could quit his Red Bull team to join Wolff's Mercedes outfit. The Austrian is a known admirer of the Dutchman, having tried but failed to sign him as a promising teenager long before he went on to become a four-time F1 champion. Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, though it is an open secret that his deal contains performance clauses which, if not met, would allow him to leave early. One such clause was active this year, but expired with the start of the break and was not triggered. Verstappen confirmed ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this month that he would stick with Red Bull for the 2026 season. But that only came after he had already amassed enough points to make it mathematically certain that he could not drop below third place in the championship before the summer break. It has been suggested that he would have needed to be fourth or lower in the standings for that clause to become active. Regardless, it is understood that the 27-year-old was not seriously considering leaving Red Bull this year, preferring to bide his time and wait to see what the balance of power on the grid looks like next year when new engine and aerodynamic design regulations come into force. In the meantime, though neither has a Mercedes contract for 2026 yet, the team is expected to retain its current line-up consisting of team leader George Russell and rookie starlet Kimi Antonelli. But it will be interesting to see what length of contract is agreed with both of them, given both are pushing for long-term extensions but Mercedes want to keep their options open in case Verstappen does become available next year. The Dutchman had made it clear he does not plan to stay in F1 for as long as many others before him have, and will want to spent as much times as possible in the quickest car he can find. He has managed to win two Grands Prix this year despite Red Bull's drop in competitiveness, but could have his head turned if they fall out of contention for victories altogether next year.

Aussie superstar Daniel Ricciardo achieved 8 Formula 1 Grand Prix wins and 32 podium finishes during his 13-year career - but his house is devoid of racing mementos and memorabilia. Ricciardo was let go by Racing Bulls after the 2024 Singapore GP, with Red Bull's advisor Helmut Marko explaining that the Aussie was no longer showing the 'killer instinct' he had displayed earlier in his racing career. The 36-year-old is now enjoying time away from the sport and has revealed that he doesn't like to be reminded of his many racing achievements while at home. 'It's funny, I don't really like having my racing stuff in my house,' Ricciardo told Mel McLaughlin at Ray White's Connect Conference on Monday. 'If my parents have some of me in their house, that's fine. 'I'm still quite shy with some of the achievements.' The beloved Aussie also joked about why he was now sporting a thick beard. 'Well, I haven't been shaving my face,' he said. 'The beard is my comfort right now. 'I had a fallout with my barber and then I lost my razor. It's been a tough six months.' Ricciardo bid farewell to what he described as a 'wild and wonderful' career, having become one of the most popular drivers in the sport. But like many athletes, stepping away from the fast-paced, rock and roll lifestyle that is professional sport, Ricciardo explained he struggled to adjust to life away from the glitz and glamour of Formula One. 'I've lived this crazy, high-speed life for so long, and I just sat into a little bit of stillness,' Ricciardo explained. 'I suddenly wasn't always surrounded by a ton of people giving their opinions and thoughts.' After the rigours of being a professional racing driver had encompassed his life for so long, Ricciardo explained he was now doing a bit of soul searching in order to understand who he truly was, while also admitting he was learning to become more magnanimous. 'I've had a lot of time, I've done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and didn't get mauled by a grizzly which was a bonus. 'I've been trying to figure out who I am other than this race car driver. 'I've come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. 'I've always been driven, and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I'm trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.' Ricciardo cut a philosophical figure as the Australian also delved into his sacking. As yet, Ricciardo has not opened up on his plans for the future. Since his departure from AlphaTauri there has been speculation that he might step back into racing in some capacity. However, it appears he is resigned to the fact that his time in Formula One has ended. While he never got to become a world champion, the ever-humble Australian spoke of his pride at his achievements in the sport. 'I never thought I would have this career. I never thought I'd be here, you know? That's the truth,' he explained. 'Yes, my dream was to be world champion, and there were years along the way where I genuinely felt like it was gonna happen. 'I got close, that's OK. 'If I were a world champion sitting here today, would it change how I feel or how I view myself, or anything like that? I don't think so. 'Maybe my ego would be big. We don't want that. I have no regrets.'
