Jordan Obita signs contract extension at Hibs

Jordan Obita has signed a new contract that extends his time at Hibs until the summer of 2027.
In his first season at Hibs, Obita's eye-catching displays saw him win two awards; the 2023/24 Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season.
Since joining in 2023, the left-back has made 87 appearances to date, alongside chipping in with seven assists and two goals.
One of those strikes was a memorable one as he bagged in Hibs UEFA Europa Conference League win against Luzern at Easter Road in August 2023.
His performances for Hibs also earned him an international call-up to Uganda.
On Obita's new deal, Hibs Head Coach David Gray said: 'I'm really pleased we've been able to extend Jordan's stay with us. He's an important part of the squad and has shown real consistency since joining us a couple of years ago.
'Jordan adds flexibility to the backline being able to play at left-wing back and on the left-side of the back three and has attributes that help us defensively and going forward. We look forward to continuing working with him.'
Hibs Sporting Director Malky Mackay added: 'We're constantly planning for the future and extending Jordan's contract at this club for a further year is a really positive step.
'Not only has Jordan showed his ability during his time with us, but he also leads by example at HTC and on the pitch every single day. He is a fantastic role model for our younger players and has helped a lot of them settle into the group when coming up from the Academy.
'Jordan has a young family and is really enjoying his time with us, so we're all delighted he will continue his stay with us.'

Hibs boss David Gray ready to unleash record signing Thibauld Klidje vs Midtjylland but £1m rated star doesn't travel

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HIBS boss David Gray has revealed record £1 million-plus capture Thibault Klidje is primed for a big debut in Herning. But Gray - full of pride ahead of his first Euro tie in the hot-seat - is anxious that the Togo international hitman is given time to meet growing expectations. It could be he's used from the bench against FC Midtjylland - with Martin Boyle or Kieron Bowie starting in a lone striker role. But, regardless, Gray is prepared to be patient with the 24-year-old as he plans for the Europa League second round qualifying first leg and, ultimately, the target of a history-making first group stage appearance for Hibs. He said: 'I'm very excited about Thibault. 'I think at the same time he's only been in the door five minutes, so it's something that I don't want to put too much expectation on early. 'He's played at a very good level, scored a lot of goals and affects games of football at a really high level. So I think he's a really good addition. 'But it doesn't happen overnight; adapting to new styles, to me, to my Scottish language rather than just the normal English that people would learn. 'He'll be ready when he's ready. 'He's available, he's had a pre-season. He's also had minutes in pre-season, so that's good, he's safe to do it. 'He's looking sharper every day in training, he's probably becoming more settled around the group. Everyone's excited.' Hibs mascots troll Rangers players in tunnel Gray's full of hope as Hibs return to Europe for the first time in two years. And not even being delayed at Edinburgh airport for several hours after a fault was discovered in their original chartered plane has impacted on their focus. The Hibs party had to wait for another plane to arrive before flying to Denmark and having a short evening work-out at the MCH Arena. Gray said: 'One thing I'm not going to do is worry about things we can't control. 'Our flight was delayed this morning, everybody knows that, it changed our schedule a little bit. 'But we had plans in place to react in case anything did come up. 'The players have all trained well, they're ready and I think tomorrow night takes care of itself. 'Europe is something that doesn't always happen in your career. 'It's one of the perks of playing for a big club like Hibs and the rewards for being successful, which we have been. 'We're ready now for this. 3 Martin Boyle in action against Rot-Weiss Essen Credit: Kenny Ramsay 'It's a real tough draw, I think in terms of how well Midtjylland have done in Europe. 'They're a very good side, they've got Champions League players experienced at the level. 'But we've also demonstrated that if we can play to the best of our ability we're a very good side - and that has to be the mindset of the players.' Gray added: 'Group stage football's never been done - that's the challenge to the players. 'Last season we spoke a lot about recreating history in a positive way. 'We've done a lot of that - and I think this is just the next stage. 'That is one of the genuine goals and ambitions of this group of players.' One guaranteed route to silencing the non-stop banter about his role in Aberdeen making this European campaign that bit more daunting for his new Hibs team-mates. And the Irishman, a member of the Dons side whose Scottish Cup win saw David Gray's men robbed of the guaranteed UEFA league phase football they THOUGHT they'd secured by finishing third in the Scottish Premiership, is in confident mood. Full of belief that the Easter Road side can knock Midtjylland out of the Europa League in the second qualifying round – and progress all the way to the group stages. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Summer arrival McGrath, speaking before Hibs trained – after a five-hour delay to their charter flight – at the MCH Arena tonight, admitted that his past life with Aberdeen had been brought up in the dressing room, saying: 'Yeah, that's the first thing that happened as soon as I walked in. So, yeah, obviously a bit of banter floating around, because I think I cut the lads' pre-season short as well. But yeah, it's only natural, isn't it? 'I made the decision early on, so to go on and win the Cup was absolutely amazing with the lads. Memories I'll never forget. 'And like you said, the boys haven't let me forget it! But no, now that I'm here, I'm really looking forward to the next period of my career. And like I said, hopefully we can get into group stage football. 'The club really seems to be on an upward trajectory, and I'm delighted to be here now - and just can't wait to get going tomorrow night. Hopefully get into the group stages. It'll be a tough task, but no reason why we can't.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Victory over favourites Midtjylland would see Hibs seeded – and fancied – against Norwegian side Fredrikstad in the third qualifying round. Failure at this stage would see them face either Ukrainian outfit FC Olexandriya or Partizan Belgrade, from Serbia, in the Conference League third qualifying round. Conference League shouldn't be limit of ambitions While many Scottish football fans may consider the Conference League a more natural home for our sides, McGrath says Hibs should be aiming high, pointing out: 'There's no point in turning up if you think you're going to be beaten. We're full of belief. 'They're a good side, but we showed at Aberdeen when I played in the group stages, you're more than capable of beating anybody. Of course, we'll be looking at the Europa League as best we can and trying to stay in that for as long as we can - and hopefully reach the group stages. 'That's where everybody wants to be. Obviously winning the Cup last year made it a more difficult task this year! It's a difficult route. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'But it's what you work all pre-season for. It's what the lads worked so hard for last year as well. We have to try to give a good account of ourselves as best we can tomorrow night, then bring it back to Easter Road next week. 'Yeah, of course there should be confidence. You've seen from Christmas on the run that the boys were on. The momentum and how everybody was pulling in the right direction together. 'There's no reason for that to stop just because the lads took a few weeks off. We've kept the core of the squad together. 'I'm really looking forward to playing with the boys. I can't wait to make my competitive debut, hopefully play tomorrow night, and try to help the boys out as best I can. I just want to be part of that. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Like I said, the momentum last year was special. Looking at the scenes after games and stuff, it seems to be a place really on the up. There's no reason why we can't continue that into the new season.' European veteran has experience on this stage McGrath is something of a European veteran, having reached league stage football with Aberdeen last year, the former St Mirren ace pointing out: 'Aye, yeah, I've had a bit of experience of it in the past, alright. Even back to early days in the League of Ireland. 'Lucky enough to play, kind of from a young age, in the qualifying rounds and stuff. And obviously group stages at Aberdeen. I'd like to think I've played a good number of European games now at the minute. 'They're the best nights, I think, of your career, looking back. The ones you always kind of remember. There's just a different feel to a domestic game. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It's all the buzz around it. Going and travelling, new stadium, learning how different teams play. It's very exciting. 'I was probably about 18, I think it was, when I had my first European game. I think Skonto Riga was the first European game with St Pat's. I was lucky enough to get exposure to that at that age. 'This is obviously a very tough tie. But the lads showed last year, they're more than capable of beating anybody. We're really looking forward to it tomorrow night. Hopefully bring it back to Easter Road next week. 'That probably is a slight advantage. You know that you have next week to kind of come around and you obviously fancy your chances playing at home. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So, yeah, we have to put our best foot forward tomorrow night. We'll have a game plan ready to rock and yeah, like I said, bring it back to Easter Road and hopefully get through. 'I know they (Midtjylland) are used to group stage football and all that goes with that, but no, we're focusing on ourselves. We know they started their first league game at the weekend, and we've played a number of pre-season games as well. So I like to think we're both at the same kind of stage of our season.' The sleepy town of Herning has been transformed by the arrival of a green-and-white army in the last 24 hours, with many of the 1000 ticket holders having already hit town. With the home section not sold out at a tidy but modestly-sized 10,000-seat arena, few would be surprised if unofficial numbers exceeded official sales. 'Yeah, even in the airport today, it was full of Hibs supporters,' said McGrath, 'Travelling from all over to get there. Flying into Copenhagen and all different airports in Europe to get here. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We know the importance of them travelling and everybody watching at home. Of course, we want to try and bring a result back, like I said. Give them something to shout about tomorrow night.'

Jamie McGrath reveals Hibs dressing room ribbing over Aberdeen group stage guarantee snatch

McGrath was serenaded by celebrating Dons with 'Hibs are falling apart again' after Scottish Cup triumph Jamie McGrath has taken dogs' abuse from his new team-mates for costing them automatic group stage football – now he wants to make it up to them by getting Hibs there via the qualifiers., writes Scott Burns in Denmark. ‌ The summer signing was part of Aberdeen 's Scottish Cup-winning side that cost David Gray's third-placed outfit a guaranteed first crack at the Euro sections. ‌ It also meant their summer break was cut short – and the Hibs dressing room haven't been shy in letting McGrath know their thoughts. ‌ Ahead of the first leg of their Europa League second qualifying round clash against Midtjylland in Denmark tonight, McGrath said: 'Yes, that's the first thing that happened as soon as I walked in. 'But no, now that I'm here, I'm really looking forward to the next period of my career and hopefully we can get into group stage football.' ‌ The Republic of Ireland cap experienced that with the Dons when they played PAOK, Eintracht Frankfurt and HJK two seasons ago, and knows how big it could be for Hibs to get on the big stage. He said: 'That's where everybody wants to be. It's what the lads worked so hard for last year as well. McGrath believes Hibs can go into their European campaign with confidence and looking to kick on from where they finished last term. 'Looking at the scenes after games and stuff, it seems to be a place really on the up. There's no reason why we can't continue that into the new season.' ‌ McGrath first played in Europe while still in Ireland with St Patrick's Athletic and Dundalk before doing it again with Dundee United and Aberdeen. He said: 'Yeah, I've had a bit of experience of it in the past, even back to early days in the League of Ireland. ‌ 'I'd like to think I've played a good number of European games now. 'It's all the buzz around it, the travelling, new stadium, learning how different teams play. He said: 'We have to put our best foot forward. We'll have a game plan ready to rock, bring it back to Easter Road and hopefully get through. 'I know they're used to group stage football and all that goes with that, but we're really looking forward to it.
