Trove of Artifacts Recovered from Black Market Goes on Display in Naples

Asharq Al-Awsat12-04-2025
Hundreds of once-missing artifacts, hunted down over decades by a special police unit, have been unveiled for the first time in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, in southern Italy.
In its vaults, the museum preserves 15,000 artifacts seized or confiscated from the black market over the years by a police unit focused on the protection of cultural heritage. It is the loot of raiders who for decades have targeted sites from classical antiquity in southern Italy, such as Pompeii and Herculaneum. Some even used underwater metal detectors, GPS, sonar and drones to extract treasures from the shipwrecks and archaeological sites submerged in the Mediterranean Sea.
From its repository, the museum selected 600 pieces to display for visitors. Among them is a statue that had been in an apartment building's courtyard since the early 20th century until its theft in the 1980s, and which was found in 2009.
There are artifacts from Pompeii that a French archaeologist bought from a local farmer in the 1990s for 50,000 lire (about $28 today). There are also ancient ceramics, coins, bronzes, marbles, pottery, furnishings, weapons and armor dating from the Archaic Period (approximately 650 to 480 BC) to the Middle Ages.
'It is a beautiful exhibition that tells a beautiful story, a story also of redemption for our stolen archaeological artifacts, which often find their way into private property or even international museums,' Massimo Osanna, the head of national museums at Italy's culture ministry, who helped curate the exhibition, said in an interview. 'Thanks to the work of the public prosecutor's office and the police, together with the ministry, (these artifacts) are finally coming home and to light.'
In 2023, the latest year for which there are complete records, the police unit recovered over 100,000 artifacts which it estimates are worth a total 264 million euros ($299 million).

Diplomatic row between France and Spain escalates after Jewish teens kicked off flight

PARIS — Tensions are escalating between Paris and Madrid following comments by Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente in the case involving the removal of a group of French Jewish teenagers from a flight in Spain. The incident occurred on 23 July, when a group of around 40 teens was removed from a plane at Valencia airport. Last Friday, Oscar Puente posted and then later deleted on the social media platform X, criticising Spanish conservative politicians for allegedly failing to back the airline and instead "supporting the Israeli brats." The post quickly drew ire from the French government, which also denounced the behaviour of Spanish law enforcement officers towards one of the group's adult chaperones. Videos on social media showed police holding the female counsellor on the ground while they handcuffed her. "The French government firmly condemns the comments made by the Spanish Minister of Transport equating French children who were Jewish with Israeli citizens, as if this in any way justified the treatment to which they were exposed," said Benjamin Haddad, Minister for European Affairs and Aurore Bergé, Minister for the Fight against airline Vueling justified its decision by citing behaviour that allegedly compromised flight a statement posted on X on Friday, the airline said the teenagers had tampered with oxygen masks and life jackets, despite being warned not to do so by the situation ultimately led to the involvement of Spanish law the organiser of the summer camp the youngsters were attending contests this version of events and claims the group was removed "without just cause."A formal complaint is expected to be filed against the airline for "physical and psychological violence and discrimination on the grounds of religion." — Euronews

Saudi interior minister visits Paris Operation Center responsible for security during Olympics

LONDON: Saudi Minister of Interior Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif visited the Paris Operation Center during his official trip to France this week, where he held meetings with ministers and officials to enhance security cooperation between the two countries. He was received on Tuesday by Laurent Nunez, the head of the Paris Police Prefecture, who briefed him on the workflow and technology of the center. Last summer, during the Paris 2024 Olympics, French authorities conducted a massive operation, deploying nearly 45,000 police officers for the event. Prince Abdulaziz also visited the headquarters of the elite unit, RAID, which conducts research, provides assistance, intervenes in counter-terrorism efforts, and handles hostage rescues as well as high-risk criminal situations. He met with Guillaume Cardy, the chief of RAID, and observed a security strategy to address threats using the latest tactical methods and supporting techniques. On Monday, Prince Abdulaziz discussed ways to enhance security cooperation with his French counterpart, Bruno Retailleau. The two interior ministers signed an executive document outlining future security cooperation between Riyadh and Paris.
