This Scenic Train Ride in an Old-fashioned Locomotive Has Open-air Cars and Seaside Stops
On a stretch of the Oregon Coast where pine-covered hills roll to the Pacific Ocean, an old-fashioned steam locomotive chugs along the shoreline, offering an unhurried view of the landscape. The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is a heritage railway that runs between the small towns of Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, carrying passengers through a cinematic slice of coastal Oregon past tidal flats, fishing boats, and weathered piers.
The train's signature trip, the Oregon Coastal Excursion - Rockaway Beach & Garibaldi, departs from either Rockaway Beach or Garibaldi and ends in the opposite town. The 30-minute journey includes onboard narration that shares the history of the route and sights along the way along with nonstop views of both the Oregon seaside and thick, coastal forest.
Upon arrival at your destination—be it Rockaway Beach or Garibaldi—you have 30 minutes to checkout local restaurants and shops or head to the beach before reboarding the train and returning to your starting destination. (Travelers can book a later return time if they want more than 30 minutes to explore.) Most trips are 90 minutes roundtrip, with a 30-minute train ride each way and a 30-minute layover.
The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad has both indoor and outdoor, open-air cars. Travelers who want to travel indoors can choose from a 'Coach Car' with cushioned seats and windows that can slide open or a 'Table Car,' which has two- and four-seat tables with chairs and windows that can slide open. The outdoor car options include a 'Covered Open Car' with bench seats and a roof and a fully 'Open Top Car,' which has bench seats, but no roof.
Dogs and other small pets, like cats, are allowed on the train, but only in the two outdoor car types.
The train is also wheelchair accessible via a wheelchair lift that's located at the Garibaldi Station. With that in mind, travelers in wheelchairs will need to board the train in Garibaldi and travel north to Rockaway Beach. It is important to note that there is no lift at Rockaway Beach, so wheelchair travelers have to stay on board for the 30 minute layover. If you need the lift to board, arrive at Garibaldi Station at least 30 minutes before the set departure time.
Tickets for the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad start at $32 for adults and $24 for children ages 3 to 12. Seniors are $27 and infants are free. Tickets can be purchased online, in advance at oregoncoastscenic.org.
Typically, the train is pulled by a 99 year-old steam locomotive, but occasionally, the steam locomotive is replaced with a historic diesel locomotive. The locomotive type is noted at checkout.

How Much Have Baggage Fees Airlines Changed Since 2024?
Major U.S. airlines have started charging at least $5 more for checked bags since the beginning of 2024. This increase was to help offset rising costs and also help generate more revenue. Consequently, these price changes can alter which is your best flight option and require more research time. Below are the current fees and corresponding changes (listed alphabetically). CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - MAY 27: Passengers retrieve luggage from a baggage carousel after arriving at Midway Airport on a Southwest Airlines flight on May 27, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Beginning tomorrow, Southwest Airlines will begin to charge most passengers $35 for their first checked bag and $45 for their second, ending its longstanding free checked bag policy. (Photo by) Getty Images On January 2, 2025, Alaska Airlines upped its first and second checked bag fees to $35 and $45, respectively. The rate is the same whether you pay the fee online or at the airport. You previously paid $30 (first bag) and $40 (second bag). In November 2024, American Airlines increased its first checked bag fee by $5 for domestic basic economy and main cabin flights within the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You now pay $35 when paying the fee online or $40 at the airport. Second bags now cost a flat $45 for most routes in either bottom-tier ticket class. Delta increased its first and second checked bag fees in March 2024 by $5. You now pay $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second checked bag on domestic flights. These fees apply to the Delta Main Basic, Delta Main, and Delta Comfort fare classes. In April 2024, JetBlue pivoted to multi-tiered pricing. In addition to being a first or subsequent checked bag, your fee also depends on whether it's peak or non-peak season, and how close to check-in you pay your fee. Blue, Blue Basic, and Blue Plus pay the following fees: More Than 24 Hours Before Departure (Off-Peak): Within 24 Hours of Departure (Off-Peak): More Than 24 Hours Before Departure (Peak): Within 24 Hours of Departure (Peak): Prices include a $10 savings per bag when you pay your domestic itinerary fees at least 24 hours before departure. The savings discount is $5 per bag for transatlantic flights. These fee increases are approximately $10 above the previous base rate. United Airlines increased its checked bag fee by $5 in most markets for departures on or after February 24, 2024. Prepaying for your suitcases at least 24 hours before takeoff saves money. Domestic flights have the accompanying baggage charges: Shocking most flyers and discount airline enthusiasts, Southwest Airlines ditched its long-time two-bag-fly-for-free policy. Since May 28, 2025, most fares incur the following fees: One personal item and a carry-on bag are still complimentary with all fare classes. You automatically avoid both fees by purchasing the top-tier Business Select® Fare or by being a Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Member. A-List members and Rapid Rewards credit card customers can waive the first checked bag fee. The precise fee waivers differ by airline, although everyday travel hacks include: Moreover, due to strict European Union carry-on standards, U.S.-based airlines may also be tightening the maximum allowable carry-on dimensions to select destinations. These are the first major fee changes since 2018 when the legacy airlines last increased their baggage fees. Be sure to check the latest fee schedules and luggage policies to avoid any surprises at airport check-in. Most airlines have a baggage fee calculator to estimate your costs for domestic and international flights before booking a flight. Related Articles:

The Hybrid-Electric Plane Maker That Wants to Change the Way We Fly
Investors are betting billions on air travel's next big things, from all-electric air taxis to supersonic jetliners. The chief executive of aerospace startup Electra says he's looking to deliver a practical option: a hybrid-electric plane that can take off and land—quickly and quietly—on a surface no bigger than a soccer field. 'It's just an airplane,' says Marc Allen, who was a Boeing executive before becoming Electra's CEO last year. But he believes this hybrid, also known as an 'ultra short,' will answer travelers' desire to fly without traffic-clogged trips to the airport, long security lines or inconvenient connections. Helicopters are too loud and expensive, and small jets still must use traditional airports, while air taxis have limited range, he says. 'We're consolidating these existing technologies in a totally unique and novel way to finally deliver direct aviation, to make it real.'

Why American Express Stock Bumped Higher on Monday
American Express is giving its Platinum cards an update. Management promised more features and perks, details of which should be provided in the coming months. 10 stocks we like better than American Express › With news of upcoming changes to its most popular product, American Express (NYSE: AXP) was a winner on the stock market as the trading week began. The company's shares increased more than 2% in value on Monday, more than double the 0.9% percentage gain of the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). Before market open, AmEx announced a series of major updates to its premium Platinum Card, a bonus-packed card that is its No. 1 product. The catch is, that won't occur right away. AmEx said in a fairly brief press release that more details would be forthcoming in the fall. It did not provide more detail. In fact, detail was quite sparse in the press release. The payment card giant didn't get specific at all regarding changes and adjustments to its popular Member Rewards program. It only went as far as to quote its group president of U.S. consumer services Howard Grosfield as saying, "We're going to take these cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining, and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel, to meet the evolving needs of our customers." AmEx did, however, offer a few clues within its communication. In the travel sphere, it boasted that qualifying card "members" can potentially access more than 1,550 airport lounges throughout the world. More are on the way; the company said it will open its Centurion Lounges in airports located in Newark, New Jersey; Salt Lake City, Utah; and across the Pacific Ocean in Tokyo. It's likely the company will spruce up at least a few existing lounges, too. Management also touted AmEx's continued investment in dining and hotel options, so we can imagine the company boosting these offerings for cardholders as well. The credit card space is becoming ever more competitive, with issuers scrambling to offer more and better perks. This is AmEx's wheelhouse, and as the master of perks, it's comforting to see the company still considers them a priority.
