Juan Ramón Verón, who scored at Old Trafford for Argentina's Estudiantes de La Plata, dies at 81
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Juan Ramón Verón, who scored a goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford to help Argentina's Estudiantes de La Plata win the 1968 Intercontinental Cup, died on Tuesday, his former team said. He was 81.
Verón, nicknamed 'the Witch,' was the father of Juan Sebastián, the current president of Estudiantes and himself a former player.
The team did not provide a cause of death, but Verón had been suffering from kidney failure for some time.
'Estudiantes bids farewell today to one of its greatest legends. His legacy, his integrity, and his example will live forever in the memory of the club,' the club said in a statement.
Verón, who played as a striker, helped Estudiantes win the Argentina league title in 1967 and then the Copa Libertadores three years in a row (1968-70) as well as the Interamerican Cup in 1969.
Estudiantes planned to pay tribute to Verón later Tuesday when the team hosts Carabobo of Venezuela in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.

But Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time to fire home the equalizer from Mendes' deflected cross in the 61st, setting off joyous scenes among his faithful fans. It was Ronaldo's 138th goal for Portugal. Nobody has ever scored more for their country. Ronaldo kept trying in what was his record-extending 221st appearance for the country, but eventually had to go off exhausted in the 88th to standing ovations from fans and a hug from coach Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo said he was carrying an injury into the game. 'I had already felt it during the warmup, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it,' Ronaldo said. Uriah Rennie, the Premier League's first Black referee, dies at 65
SHEFFIELD, England (AP) — Uriah Rennie, the first Black referee in the Premier League, has died. He was 65. 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former chair and trailblazing referee, Uriah Rennie,' the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association posted Sunday on X. 'Uriah made history as the Premier League's first Black referee, officiating over 300 top-flight matches between 1997 and 2008,' the statement said. 'He broke down barriers, shaped our football community and inspired generations to come.' The Jamaica-born official grew up in Sheffield, northern England, and oversaw hundreds of matches starting with his breakthrough appointment when Derby hosted Wimbledon in August 1997. That game was abandoned, however, because the stadium lighting failed. Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May.
