Upgraded Mount Kinabalu postal service boosts tourist experience
RANAU: The enhancement of postal services on Mount Kinabalu is expected to improve the quality of the tourist experience, particularly by keeping pace with technological advancements, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
She said the availability of postal services on Mount Kinabalu is more than just a facility - it serves as an iconic symbol of one-way communication from the country's highest peak, providing visitors with a meaningful memento.
'I climbed Mount Kinabalu to observe the upgrades as part of efforts to promote the enhanced postal services available on the mountain, including uniquely designed limited-edition postcards and the introduction of a new cancellation stamp specifically for postcards sent from Mount Kinabalu,' she told reporters at Kinabalu Park near here today.
Mount Kinabalu or Aki Nabalu (ancestor's mountain) in the Kadazandusun language stands at 4,095.2 metres and is located in the Ranau district, about 90 kilometres east of Kota Kinabalu.
Pos Malaysia launched its first post box on Mount Kinabalu in 2015, earning a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the highest-altitude post box in the country, located 3,289 metres above sea level.
Meanwhile, in a statement on the programme, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that as part of ongoing efforts to improve telecommunications services in high-altitude areas, a service quality testing session was carried out using the MCMC Nexus application.
According to the statement, the application developed by MCMC allows for monitoring, comprehensive evaluation, and analysis focused on customer experience, including at key touchpoints such as Mount Kinabalu.
'The MADANI government, through the Communications Ministry and MCMC, will continue strengthening communications infrastructure in strategic tourism areas such as Mount Kinabalu for the comfort of visitors.
'Ongoing cooperation between government agencies, telecommunications service providers, and relevant stakeholders is crucial in realising the agenda of enhancing postal services,' it said.
The statement also noted that the fields of communications and postal services not only improve accessibility for the public and tourists but also help elevate Malaysia's reputation in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026.

Luang Prabang in Laos will be the location of the region's first Metropolo hotel, as per the recently signed Hotel Management Agreement (HMA) with Sanher Investment & Development, who will be developing the hotel. The Deputy Home Minister, who is also Lenggong MP, said the Rimba Raid X Lenggong event, held for the second time, indirectly supports the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign through international media coverage and the participation of riders from various countries. 'Rimba Raid X Lenggong features participants from Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Thailand, several European countries, and the host nation, Malaysia. 'These participants indirectly serve as 'tourism ambassadors', helping to promote Malaysia as a sports tourism destination to the world,' he told Bernama after the 2025 Rimba Raid X Lenggong prize-giving ceremony here on Sunday night. Revamped KLIA Aerotrain to resume service tomorrow, launch by PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: After nearly 28 months of suspension, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is set to relaunch the fully modernised KLIA Aerotrain service tomorrow (July 1), marking a significant milestone in the country's airport transformation agenda. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1), where the upgraded automated people mover system will resume full operations at 10am. A long-standing icon of KLIA since 1998, the Aerotrain service has undergone a RM456mil overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742mil Airport Regeneration Plan, aimed at future-proofing one of the region's busiest aviation hubs. Now equipped with state-of-the-art Alstom Innovia APM 300R trainsets, the system features three-car driverless units capable of transporting up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. Hence the train journey between the main terminal and the satellite building is now reduced to under three minutes. Each train is fitted with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce service disruptions, boost operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort -- addressing past concerns over frequent breakdowns that plagued the ageing system. The new system underwent six months of rigorous testing and commissioning by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani was reported as saying that extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. Originally slated for completion in March 2025, the project faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while keeping KLIA operational. KLIA T1 currently manages more than 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a pivotal role in maintaining smooth connectivity, especially for international transfer passengers. The satellite terminal houses many long-haul international carriers, making fast terminal transfers essential in reducing missed connections and ensuring seamless passenger journeys. With the Aerotrain now back online, the airport is better positioned to cater to rising passenger volumes, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia 2026 and KLIA's projected recovery to pre-pandemic traffic levels.- Bernama
