Sean O'Malley issues five-word response after Conor McGregor praise

The American has traded barbs with the former dual-weight champion in recent times, but it seems as if they have rekindled their relationship Sean O'Malley has seemingly buried the hatchet with Conor McGregor ahead of his return to the cage this weekend. The former bantamweight champion is gearing up for a return to the octagon on Saturday as he goes head-to-head with Merab Dvalishvili in an eagerly anticipated rematch at the Prudential Center in Newark. The pair originally clashed last September - with Dvalishvili going on to claim the 135lb title after securing a unanimous decision win. ‌ Following that triumph, Dvalishvili successfully defended his title back in January, beating Umar Nurmagomedov by decision. 'Suga,' on the other hand hasn't stepped into the cage since his defeat at UFC 306. Given how dominant the Georgian was in the first encounter, many are backing the 'Machine' to win again. ‌ Yet, one unexpected supporter in O'Malley's corner is McGregor – surprising many. Despite being respectful of each other at first, their relationship took a sour turn over the last few years. The pair have traded verbal jabs online- with McGregor slamming 'Suga' over his previous issues with USADA. Nevertheless, it seems they have moved past their grievances. McGregor lavished praise on O'Malley, remarking that his training camp echoes of McGregor's own ahead of his second bout with Nate Diaz: "Very reminiscent of my Diaz 2 prep. Intriguing! BIG FIGHT FEEL!" The Irishman wrote on X. After hearing the news, O'Malley expressed delight at having the 'Notorious' in his corner once more. "Hell yeah, I will take it," O'Malley said during the UFC 316 media day. "I will forever be a huge Conor fan. I feel grateful to be able to watch his come up in my generation, I watched it happen. I think we'll look back, he had one of the craziest careers. It's cool to be able to watch it happen while I was getting into the UFC and everything. I'm pumped the relationship is back to good." The 30-year-old added: "I have always taken inspiration from Conor fights. I've watched Conor fights more than probably any (fights), well, (I watch) my fights more, but I've watched a lot of Conor fights." In preparation for the upcoming rematch, O'Malley revealed he has watched plenty of sequels, including McGregor's second bout with Diaz - to see how they responded in the second bout when they were counted out. "So I was watching Conor-Nate. I've just been watching a bunch of fights. We just have cameras recording so much, I did not realise that was a moment that got captured," he said. "I've been watching a bunch of fights. I've been watching some rematches."

Fife Flyers takeover complete as US investors buy ice hockey outfit

A group of American investors have completed a takeover of Fife Flyers. The Kirkcaldy club – the UK's oldest ice hockey team – confirmed the completion of the takeover on Thursday. It came after previous owners Tom Muir and Jack Wishart made the shock announcement that they were putting the club up for sale in February, after nearly three decades at the helm. The identity of the new owners has not been revealed, but they have installed a new management team to run the club, led by Cardiff Devils legend Max Birbraer. Gareth Chalmers, former managing director at Glasgow Clan and Braehead Arena, has been appointed as chief commercial and operations officer. The Fife Flyers statement said: 'We want to express our gratitude to those who carried the torch before us and acknowledge their role in preserving the proud legacy of the Flyers. 'From this moment forward, our group is fully responsible for the direction, development, and future of the club. We take that responsibility seriously. 'It is an honour to lead the UK's oldest and most iconic hockey team. 'Our mission is clear: to restore the pride, energy, and identity of Fife Flyers hockey. Both on and off the ice.' The club say they are close to appointing a new head coach and will also look to keep hold of several core members of the side. The statement added: 'This is a people's club. 'Fife is the beating heart of Scottish hockey, and its supporters are the soul of this organisation. 'Your loyalty, your voice, and your passion will shape everything we do. 'We are here to build something special – a first-class hockey experience that reflects the grit and character of this town. 'Under this leadership, we will lead with transparency, we will compete with pride, and we will always listen. 'To every supporter: this is your team. We're honoured to be at the helm – and we're ready to give it everything we've got.'

Win fans over and dismantle Celtic – Russell Martin has work to do at Rangers

The former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager takes over from Philippe Clement, who departed in February and was replaced by interim boss Barry Ferguson. The appointment of a new boss comes following the confirmation of the takeover by an American consortium of Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises, while Kevin Thelwell recently officially joined the Light Blues from Everton as the new sporting director. It's all change at Ibrox and, here, we look at the in-tray awaiting Martin, who has to quickly get his side ready for July's Champions League qualifiers. Win over the fans There has been a mood of disgruntlement among many Rangers fans before and since the confirmation of Martin as the new man in the hot-seat. Rangers supporters are unhappy with his performance in the Premier League, where he was sacked by Southampton after a horror start to the season after bringing them up through the Play-Offs. There is the perception that Martin was too dogmatic in his possession-based style of play and paid the price in the English top flight. He is already under severe and unprecedented pressure to hit the ground running. Squad overhaul There's plenty of work to be done to overhaul Rangers' squad which ended up trophy-less last season, albeit reaching the Quarter-Finals of the Europa League. Rangers confirmed the departures of Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun and Tom Lawrence with their contracts set to expire. Loanees Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Rafael Fernandes have also left the club, while players like Robin Propper, Nedim Bajrami, Ben Davies and Kieran Dowall – the latter two who spent last season at loan at Birmingham – are expected to depart. Midfielder Lyall Cameron will arrive from Dundee but he will not be alone. Arguably, a new goalkeeper, right-back, left-back, two centre-backs, two wingers, a number 10 and a striker is required. Of course, much will depend on the style favoured by Martin and how much money is made available, but the Light Blues will have a new look next season. What to do with Raskin and Dessers? Midfielder Nicolas Raskin is arguably the club's biggest asset following a terrific season during which he broke into the Belgium national side. The 24-year-old, who signed from Standard Liege in January 2023 for a reported fee of around £1.3million, has two years left on his contract. Rangers fans remain disgruntled about players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, who were allowed to run down their deals and leave for nothing. Enigmatic Cyriel Dessers has often been a frustrating figure since signing from Cremonese in 2023 but ended up top scorer in the Premiership last season with 18 goals, while he netted 29 times for Rangers in total, taking his tally over two seasons to 51. Rangers fans appear split on whether the Nigeria international, contracted to 2027, should stay or go. But how much would it cost to replace him with a striker who guarantees the same goal return? Trophies needed Martin may just have walked in the door but he will be expected to win silverware this season with Celtic dominating Scottish football. Rangers fans watched their Old Firm rivals clinch their 13th League title in 14 seasons – albeit the Light Blues had a better head-to-head in League games – and only a Scottish Cup Final defeat to Aberdeen on penalties denied the Hoops a sixth domestic treble in nine years. It will be down to Martin to change that direction of travel. Euro qualifiers next month The appointment of Martin dragged on and Rangers are facing a race against time for next season. The Light Blues will have to go through three rounds of qualifying in order to reach the league phase of the Champions League, the first of which is July 22-23. Rangers return for pre-season training on June 23 and, somehow, Martin needs to assemble a squad to hit the ground running.
