The Indian and English players were seen wearing black armbands on in memory of former pacer David 'Syd' Lawrence, who had passed away at the age of 61 on Saturday.
A minute's applause was observed at Headingley ahead of the start of the day's play in memory of the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, who played five Tests between 1988 and 1992 and collected 18 wickets.

Lawrence had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, an incurable illness, nearly a year ago. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease,' read a statement from the pacer's family given to Britain's PA news agency.
'A true trailblazer'
Besides playing five Tests for England, Lawrence played 185 First-Class and 113 List A matches for Gloucestershire in a domestic career spanning 16 years from 1981 to 1997.
England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson described Lawrence as a 'true trailblazer' and a 'powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport'.
This is the second time in three days in the ongoing Headingley Test that the players are wearing black armbands. They had previously paid tribute to victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash earlier this month with a minute's silence on Day 1.

Jofra Archer eyes England return in IND vs ENG 2nd Test after pacer makes first-class cricket comeback after four years
Jofra Archer is aiming for a Test return after four long years after the England pacer was named in the Sussex playing XI against Durham in a County Championship 2025 Division One match on Sunday. The 30-year-old Barbados-born cricketer, who wasn't a part of the Sussex squad initially, was added late ahead of their the four-day red-ball fixture at the Seat Unique Riverside Stadium. Archer is expected to bowl later in the match against Durham after Sussex opted to bat first having won the toss. He was also not originally part of the 12-member travelling squad but travelled to Chester-le-Street later. The last time Archer played as Test was against India. Post that, frequent injuries to his elbow and back have kept him out of the game. He didn't play a single game in 2022. Although he returned to action in 2023, but was soon injured again. He made a full-fledged return to cricket towards the end of 2024. In fact, Archer's last played a first-class match for Sussex was in May 2021 against Kent. If all goes well for Archer and if he remains injury-free against Durham, the England could be considered for the second Test match against India, which starts on July 2 at Edgbaston. Archer was initially included in England's white-ball tour to West Indies recently, but a thumb injury that he sustained while playing for Rajasthan Royals during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The England speedster had a steady run in IPL 2025, playing 12 matches for Rajasthan Royals and picking up 11 wickets. He was also one of the fastest bowlers in IPL 2025, clocking 152.3 kmph against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. In 13 Tests so far, Archer has taken 42 wickets at an average of 31.04, including two six-wicket hauls during the 2019 Ashes.

In his latest column, Gavaskar said that while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can name the trophy whatever they want, Indian fans might find it strange that James Anderson's name has been put before Sachin Tendulkar's. Gavaskar slams ECB Gavaskar explained that Tendulkar is not only India's greatest cricketer but also much senior to Anderson in terms of experience. He pointed out that Tendulkar has scored the most runs and centuries in Test cricket, and even in ODIs. Meanwhile, Anderson is third on the all-time Test wicket-takers list, and his ODI record is nowhere close to Tendulkar's. 'The ECB is fully entitled to call the series by any name they choose but for most, if not all, Indian cricket lovers it is jarring to know that Anderson's name comes first. Not only is Sachin Tendulkar along with Kapil Dev the greatest Indian cricketer, but also senior to Anderson by more than a dozen years. He added that he has great respect for Anderson, but as an Indian, Tendulkar will always be above him in his eyes. 'Tendulkar is also part of a World cup-winning team which Anderson has not been. Jimmy Anderson was a terrific bowler but mainly in English conditions and his record away is nowhere near as good as Tendulkar's is. So, by all accounts Tendulkar's name should come first. This argument that they are going by the letters of the alphabet where the letter A comes before T is such a lame one for there's simply no comparison with what Tendulkar has done and achieved and what Anderson has for their respective countries. Please don't misunderstand, there's massive respect for Anderson but as an Indian, for me Tendulkar will always be above him. I also urge all Indian cricket lovers including the Indian media to call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy,' he added. Gavaskar had earlier expressed his doubts over the renaming of the trophy, raising concerns about the legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, after whom the original cup was named. Tendulkar then stepped in and urged the ECB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to maintain a connection with Pataudi. Following these concerns, the ECB decided to introduce the Pataudi Medal for Excellence, which will be awarded to the winning captain.
