Mbeumo and Wissa in Williams' underrated XI of the season

BBC Newsa day ago

As the dust settles on this Premier League campaign, we asked former England international Fara Williams for her underrated XI for the season. She selected Byran Mbeumo and Yoanne Wissa from Brentford in her team.I can't have one of these without the other really. For a club who finished 10th to have one player score 19 league goals and another score 20 is incredible. When Ivan Toney departed last summer everyone wondered how Brentford would make up for his goals and I worried they may struggle to stay in the league without their main man. However, Thomas Frank has adjusted his system to maximise the effectiveness of Mbeumo and Wissa whose quality and pace has caused so many Premier League teams' defences problems this season. For context, Toney managed 20 league goals in his best season - and these two got 39 between them! It is an unbelievable goal return. For Brentford to be fighting for and talking about Europe deep into the season shows how established they have become as a Premier League club and Bees fans must be raving about this duo every week. There will be the inevitable conversations over whether the club can keep hold of them over the transfer window but regardless of what happens it has been a very special season.Brentford finished the season as the league's sixth-highest scorers. Including the 11 scored by Kevin Schade, their front three scored 50 combined. Fara Williams was speaking to BBC Sport's Nat Hayward

Djokovic eases into last-16 with 99th French Open win

PARIS, May 31 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic notched his 99th career French Open win with a clinical 6-3 6-4 6-2 defeat of Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic to reach the fourth round on a memorable Saturday night in Paris. As 40,000 fans watched Paris St Germain's Champions League final on video screens across the road at the Parc des Princes, the 38-year-old turned on the style on Court Philippe Chatrier. Three-time champion Djokovic, bidding for an historic 25th Grand Slam title, was given a thorough workout at times by his 23-year-old opponent but more than matched Misolic's power and always looked in complete control. Djokovic failed to convert nine break points early on but made the breakthrough for a 4-2 lead after showing incredible defensive skills to retrieve a barrage of smashes. The Serb saved a break point at 1-2 in the second set and then earned applause from the fans as he sportingly dusted his opponent down after Misolic tumbled over and got his sweat-soaked shirt coated in clay. He soon showed his ruthless side though to break serve with a backhand winner as he raced into a two-set lead. The sixth seed was in no mood for a late night as exploding fireworks and roars rang out from across the road and the third set followed the same pattern as the first two as he cruised through to a last-16 clash against Britain's Cameron Norrie.

Neil's move would rock Sunderland, though, who are already preparing to lose Jobe Bellingham. The 19-year-old is already talking to clubs in Germany and likely to leave in the aftermath of their 2-1 win over Sheffield United. Bellingham joined the Black Cats for £3m in 2023. The midfielder has since played 90 times, scoring 11 goals. He is a regular for England's age group sides, and has so far earned four caps at Under-21 level. Speaking after winning promotion last week, Bellingham told Sky Sports: "I always believed, you have to believe. "You need experience, of course, with youth like at Sunderland you play loads of games you get that experience. "You get experience by failing and we failed together so many times and in the end we come good." Neil, meanwhile, burst onto the scene after debuting in 2018. The all-action midfielder has since become captain of his boyhood club. Neil has played 197 times for Sunderland, scoring 12 goals and laying on 20 assists. 4
