Notre Dame Impact Players For 2025: No. 45 James Flanigan originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Notre Dame is now 45 days away from kicking off the 2025 season against the Hurricanes down in Hard Rock Stadium. The Irish will be relying on some impact players to get them through the home opener as well as getting them back to another run at the National Championship. I broke down who I believe will be the top 50 impactful players for Notre Dame this season. Let's continue this countdown to kickoff with my No. 45 most impactful player, true freshman tight end James Flanigan.
A true freshman making an impact his first season in South Bend has been relatively consistent under head coach Marcus Freeman. In back to back seasons in 2022 and 2023, we saw two cornerbacks in Benjamin Morrison and Christian Gray cement themselves as impact talents. In 2024, true freshman Anthonie Knapp got the start at left tackle and proceeded to start for 14 more games until his injury late in the playoffs. Flanigan could be the next player on that list based on his skillset and the team's need.
What He Brings To The Table
Flanigan is a 6-6, 240-pound tight end hailing from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He's considered to be a more 'old school' tight end as he does his best work attached to the offensive line and is a tenacious blocker. Flanigan is very long and athletic, but his background in playing high school defensive end and hockey allows him to be an aggressive and powerful blocker at the point of attack, something the Irish desperately need out of the position. He's also a more than capable pass catcher.
Flanigan caught 11 touchdowns as a senior in high school and also finished with 13.0 sacks as a defensive end. The former consensus four-star is a very athletic player who will make it difficult on the coaching staff to keep him off the field, despite having three to four more experienced players in front of him on the depth chart. lanigan has showcased his abilities to work vertically down the field and work the seams, something that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock will be pushing to do with this unit in 2025.
What Is His Impact?
Barring injury, it's unlikely Flanigan will dethrone senior tight end Eli Raridon as the No. 1 tight end in this offense. However, his arrival in South Bend this summer immediately gives the room some much needed depth it has lacked so far this offseason. Because of his versatile skillset, Flanigan presents some unique traits to the offense that the other tight ends don't possess. They lost their best run blocking tight end in Cooper Flanagan late in the playoffs last season with an achilles injury and his timeline to return remains uncertain.
We've seen how Raridon will likely be used in this offense; when you combine Raridon's skillset with Jack Larsen's and Arkansas transfer Ty Washington's skillset, the Irish offense is in need of a solid blocker at tight end. Sixth year senior Kevin Bauman could potentially fit that role, but given his injury history, it's unclear how much will be put on his plate. Flanigan can come in a provide immediate assistance to the Notre Dame run blocking scheme, and with a backfield that features Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price and a host of other, run blocking becomes a top-of-the-list priority.
Flanigan can also impact the pass game as well, but his path to on the field success is as a primary run blocker. His diverse skillset, athletic ability, health and size gives him a path to seeing the field as a true freshman which is why I have him ranked as the No. 45 impactful player for Notre Dame this season.

Oklahoma Sooners offer USC 4-star offensive tackle commit

The Oklahoma Sooners have the majority of their 2026 recruiting class committed at this point in the cycle. A couple of key names to watch are four-star wide receiver Davian Groce and four-star defensive end Jake Kreul. But as July turned to August, the Sooners offered another big-time target in the 2026 cycle in four-star offensive tackle Vlad Dyakonov, according to a post he made on X (formerly known as Twitter). Dyakonov, out of Folsom, Calif., is currently committed to Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans. But Oklahoma issued an offer on August 1 in an attempt to sway a big-time tackle prospect to leave the state of California. He holds 23 Power Four offers and has been committed to USC since April. He's a four-star prospect across the board and ranks as high as No. 12 at offensive tackle according to the Rivals Industry rankings. Rivals also considers Dyakonov the No. 12 player in California and the No. 101 player in the nation. When you flip on the highlights, it's easy to see why. To say that Dyakonov is a physical presence is an understatement. His play strength jumps off the screen, and combined with his ability to move in space, he's a force in the run game. In pass protection, once he latches on to a defender, they're pretty much done. Dyakonov displays excellent footwork for a guy his size, showing off good lateral agility. He's one of those players that every coach will love because he plays with a physical demeanor and goes through the whistle. Dyakonov has experience at both left and right tackle and has the size and athleticism to be a star at tackle at the collegiate level. Though the Oklahoma Sooners offered Dyakonov fairly late in the cycle, he's a player who's worth the pursuit. However, it may be difficult to pull the USC commit out of California. Currently, Oklahoma has just two offensive linemen committed in the 2026 cycle, four-star prospects Deacon Schmitt and Noah Best. Texas A&M senior RB predicted to lead the SEC in rushing this season

Texas A&M's 2025 running game will be headlined by senior running back Le'Veon Moss, who, after missing the final four games of the 2024 season due to a lower body injury sustained against South Carolina, will be back. Moss is back and 100% healthy, according to himself and head coach Mike Elko, which was further confirmed during the first two practices of the preseason last week. However, Moss has not received the national coverage he deserves, while a small portion of the Aggie fan base is worried that he could face issues returning to complete form, based on the wear and tear of playing running back in the SEC. Still, Moss has dealt with setbacks in the past, and the depth behind him, including Rueben Owens, Amari Daniels, EJ Smith, and freshmen Deondrae Riden and Jamarion Morrow. Last season, depth was a significant issue after Rueben Owens was lost early in the preseason, leaving just Amari Daniels and EJ Smith, who was also dealing with an injury, as the only options behind Moss. As we all witnessed, the lack of depth hurt the Aggie offense, forcing starting quarterback Marcel Reed to drop back more than OC Collin Klein wanted late in the season. On Saturday, Michael Bratton of That SEC Podcast listed his top 10 SEC running backs who will finish the 2025 season as the top rushers, and for what seems like the first time all offseason, Bratton chose Le'Veon Moss to finish the year as the leading rusher in the SEC. Before his injury, Moss led the SEC with 765 rushing yards and ten touchdowns while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Currently listed at 5'11" and 210 pounds, Moss is a complete back with a bright NFL future, and if he stays healthy, combined with the offense living up to its elite potential, expect Moss not only to lead the SEC in rushing, but also to finish in the top five nationally. Texas A&M HC Mike Elko is 'blessed' to have four talented running backs

Texas A&M's 2025 running back room will be headlined by the return of senior back Le'Veon Moss, who, outside of dealing with a minor legal brushup this summer, is reportedly "100%" healthy after sustaining his season-ending lower body injury halfway through the 2024 season. However, Moss will be aided by one of the deepest running back rotations in the country with the return of Reuben Owens, Amari Daniels, and EJ Smith. During Thursday's SEC media days appearance, head coach Mike Elko was asked about his 2025 running back room, first praising Le'Veon Moss's 2024 performance before his injury, where he led the SEC in rushing with 765 yards, ten touchdowns, and 6.3 yards per carry. Moss's injury significantly altered A&M's offense, placing additional pressure on starting quarterback Marcel Reed to produce through the air, which was challenging given the team's limited reliable receiving options. It's also important to note that sophomore RB Reuben Owens was also lost for the season, and despite his brief return against Texas and USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, the former five-star was not himself after tearing his ACL during fall practice. How OC Collin Klein will use Owens, who could become a hybrid receiver in certain packages, will determine just how successful the Aggie rushing attack will be. "There's a lot of quality in that group. It starts with Le'Veon Moss, who was on his way to being the leading rusher in the conference and was one of the leading rushers in the nation when he got injured." "We're blessed with four really talented backs, and you need them because, in this conference, they come and go really fast." If Moss can pick up where he left off, Texas A&M is in great shape, while Owens is determined to show the nation that he remains an elite back with first-round NFL draft potential. However, Elko also noted EJ Smith is healthy and back to form, which is good news for those who remember his elite play and versatility during the bulk of his career at Stanford.
