Valkyries first-round pick Juste Jocyte makes her first visit to Chase Center
Juste Jocyte took her first 17½-hour flight from Lithuania to San Francisco this week, but it won't be her last. The 19-year-old wing drafted by the Golden State Valkyries as their first-round pick in April is preparing for her WNBA debut next season. From a 5,780-mile relocation to adjusting to a different style of play, Jocyte is already counting down the nine months until she will become just the second Lithuanian player in WNBA history. (The first, Jurgita Štreimikytė, played three seasons for Indiana in 2000-01 and 2005.) Jocyte was presented with a Valkyries jersey on the floor ahead of Sunday's game against Atlanta, flanked by general manager Ohemaa Nyanin and team president Jess Smith. It was the first time the 2025 first-round pick had met them after speaking on the phone with them before the draft. Her first impression of the Bay Area? 'It's cold,' she told the Chronicle. 'But I can see how nice it is here.' More For You First-round pick Juste Jocyte excited about her Valkyries debut next season Three reasons why Valkyries have evolved into a top 3-point shooting team Jocyte was introduced before Sunday's game in front of the largest crowd she's ever seen for a women's basketball game. As she soaked in the atmosphere, she was most excited to meet the people in the franchise she'll be playing for next season. 'It's exciting, knowing that that team is an underdog, not gonna lie, I think it's not like easier, but I prefer to play that way, when people look down on you,' Jocyte said. 'So, really, it's been fun to watch them, to see them securing that playoff spot almost.' After being drafted in April, Jocyte spent this spring in Europe training for EuroBasket, where she led the upstart Lithuanian team to a surprise knockout-round appearance while averaging 16 points in 31.5 minutes per game. She'll spend the winter playing for Uni Girona CB in Spain with a focus on building muscle to prepare herself for the physicality of the WNBA. 'I know I have to adapt, it's a very different style of play,' Jocyte said. 'It's just more physical, really, and it's more individual, and there's more 1-on-1s. But now you see more Europeans coming into the U.S., and the states are adapting a little bit more to the Europeans, too.' In EuroBasket, Jocyte faced Valkyries wing Cecilia Zandalasini when Lithuania went up against Italy and against Janelle Salaün and Iliana Rupert when France eliminated her team. She was awarded the FIBA Women's EuroBasket Rising Star in Lithuania's first appearance since 2015. 'I took a lot of pride in playing for my country; it's really different feelings playing for a club in a country, so it's been nice,' she said. 'I know not every club is that supportive, yeah. So it's just been really nice to see their support.' Jocyte had previous game experience against WNBA players in EuroBasket qualification games in 2018, at age 13. She has also won a silver medal in FIBA's U16 EuroBasket at age 13 and captured gold in FIBA's U18 EuroBasket at 16. During her silver medal run, she was named to the All-Star Five as one of the top-five players in the tournament, and she won MVP when she won gold. 'Being competitive at such a young age and playing against other athletes within the WNBA ecosystem is amazing,' Nyanin said. 'Regardless of where an athlete is from, we're looking at their competitiveness, how they can fit in Coach Natalie's system and the level of talent they're going against.' Jocyte had her first in-person meeting with head coach Natalie Nakase as well Sunday, but has tuned into every Valkyries game on tape delay. There is a 10-hour time zone difference between Lithuania and San Francisco, and Jocyte stayed up all night once — to watch the draft. 'I had a feeling it was going to be' the Valkyries, Jocyte said. 'When I heard my name, it was just magic. … Mostly, I got to go to bed. It was 2 a.m., maybe I would have had more emotions if I were in the same time zone, but then I heard my name and was like, bedtime.' There are a ton of unanswered questions about next season's roster makeup. Just Kate Martin and Carla Leite are under contract, and four players will be unrestricted free agents: All-Star Kayla Thornton, Tiffany Hayes, Monique Billings and Temi Fagbenle. Around two-thirds of the league's players will become free agents as a new collective bargaining agreement gets hashed out with the players union. Against that backdrop, Jocyte is expected to sign for next season.

Roma continue talks for Bailey, Echeverri and Fabio Silva
Roma remain very active on the market. Giallorossi sporting director Frederic Massara must seek to strengthen the attack as quickly as possible for an increasingly impatient Gasperini. The new name is that of Leon Bailey, who played a key role in Roma's defeat to Aston Villa in the recent friendly. The Jamaican winger is valued at around €30 million and can be adapted to the left. At the same time, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Massara has resumed contact with City for Echeverri. The Giallorossi are considering the possibility of bringing him on a dry loan. Finally, there's the possibility of Fabio Silva, who already has an agreement with Roma. The agreement between the Giallorossi and Wolves is still pending.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are currently the first-choice duo while Joe Gomez is expected to provide cover. Marc Guehi linked with Liverpool deal Throwing a youngster into the white hot atmosphere of the Premier League at this stage of his career may well be a risk and that's why we've seen links maintained with other defenders. Marc Guehi of course appears to be Liverpool's preferred option. His contract situation plays into Liverpool's hands - setting them up for potentially a bargain deal this summer or else a free transfer in 2026 when he becomes out of contract. Liverpool's recruitment of Leoni will have no major bearing on a deal for Guehi - with the Reds also content to wait until 2026 to get their man. Guehi situation now DANGEROUS for Palace That's according to a new report from Football Insider - which claims the situation is becoming ever more 'dangerous' for Crystal Palace over their captain. 'I don't think that will stop Liverpool pursuing this move for Guehi, but it's a dangerous one for Palace because Guehi is more than happy to stay and see out his contract, and that might suit Liverpool,' the report from Pete O'Rourke states. 'They can look at it again next summer and take Guehi on a free, and for Guehi himself, it's a big season ahead – he won't want to move from Palace if he's not guaranteed first-team minutes. 'If Palace do drop their price tag, then maybe Liverpool would decide to push through a deal for Guehi.' © IMAGO - Marc Guehi Liverpool
