May 17 South Africa (Turffontein) form analysis

New Paper16-05-2025

Race 1 (1,160m)
(5) JAZZ PIANIST and (7) RACEWAY have the benefit of race experience and should be competitive on what they have shown. The betting will provide a guide to the chances of those on debut.
On pedigree, (6) LIMERICK LACE, (10) STONE OF SCONE and (11) TOP SHELF TEDDY appeal most on pedigree.
Race 2 (1,160m)
(2) BALULE and (3) CARNARVON are all likely to improve with the benefit of experience, so they ought to acquit themselves well.
(7) SHADOWFAX and (9) TOP FLOOR are attractively bred newcomers worth a market check on debut.
Race 3 (1,400m)
(11) PRETTY PERSUASIVE and (13) VIPINGO can improve and have already shown enough to play leading roles.
(12) SCHIPOLE and (10) INTO DANCING are well-bred newcomers who must be respected on debut, especially if the market speaks in their favour.
Race 4 (1,400m)
(1) TWO FOR THE BOYS (tongue-tie on first time), (12) WORLD ORDER and filly (13) SCARLETT HEART (first-time blinkers) have the form and experience to fight for victory but in a race that will not take much winning, well-bred newcomers (10) RADIO STAR and (11) TAKE NO PRISONERS need not be special to score at the first time of asking.
Race 5 (2,400m)
Tricky.
Last-start winners (6) ROMEO'S MAGIC and hat-trick seeking (8) MO MENT remain competitive for top honours under resultant penalties but are closely matched on recent form with class-dropper (3) TO THE RESCUE.
Consistent (5) DOUGLAS DRAGON would not be winning out of turn either, while (1) STAR COIN and (4) EIGER SANCTION could have more to offer going this extended trip for the first time.
Race 6 (1,600m)
(3) PUMPKIN PIE and (8) CRESCENDO confirmed the promise of their debuts by winning over shorter distances last time and this extended trip should unlock further improvement from both 3yo geldings.
Fellow last-start maiden scorers (11) WAR REPORTER and (13) APACHE CHIEF also have the means to acquit themselves competitively on their handicap debuts.
(14) GUERILLA WARFARE and (9) ALADDIN'S LAMP appeal most of the remainder.
Race 7 (1,600m)
(1) BACCHUS and (2) DON'T CRY FOR ME were outclassed in back-to-back outings at Grade 1 level but will find life easier in this.
Unexposed (11) COUNT HUHTIKUU fits a similar profile. Progressive (5) ARTIST'S MODEL, distance-suited (6) MASTERSHIP and (10) CLAW are proven in this grade and should make their presence felt in the outcome.
Race 8 (1,160m)
Consistent (4) FASTNET FILLY is very speedy and will be the one they all have to catch.
(5) JUST THE TWO OF US bounced back with a good win last time and deserves respect in this line-up.
(6) KOMATI RIVER and (7) SALENIO PENINSULA are both better than what they showed in their latest outings, so should be on the premises too.
Race 9 (1,160m)
A very competitive-looking handicap.
(3) FULLY COMMITTED won nicely on debut but did not repeat the same performance at her next outing. She might enjoy reverting to the minimum trip and must be considered.
(9) FLIGHT OF A CONDOR was a good winner last time and it would not be a surprise were she to follow up.
(1) HONG KONG has not always shown her best side but she is capable of contesting the finish when she does.
(4) ROAMING SPIRIT and (6) GREAT NOTION have been racing well and are both capable of getting involved with the finish.

Ange Postecoglou next job, sacked by Tottenham, Al-Ahli move, reports, rumours

Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. Ange Postecoglou's next job may be with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, according to reports from The Telegraph. The Asian Champions League winners may be on the hunt for a new manager with current boss Matthias Jaissle possibly set to return to Europe. The German has been linked with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, and was previously among the contenders for the West Ham gig in the English Premier League before Graham Potter was appointed by the East London club. Picture:Matthias Jaissle possibly may return to Europe. Picture:Should Jaissle depart, Postecoglou is believed to be Al-Ahli's target as replacement. A squad, which includes the likes of former Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino, former Leicester and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, former Brentford striker Ivan Toney and former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, hoisted the AFC Champions League trophy aloft in May after defeating Japanese side Kawasaki 2-0 in the final. But, they finished fifth in the Saudi Pro League, 16 behinds champions Al-Ittihad, who boasts former Real Madrid goal scoring machine Karim Benzema, former Leicester and Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and one-time Liverpool midfielder Fabinho among their ranks. Postecoglou is tipped to receive offers from several clubs throughout the northern hemisphere after his sacking from Tottenham. Winning the Europa League trophy, ending Spurs 17-year trophy drought, and 41-year year European trophy drought, proved once again that the Australian is a manager who can deliver success. Upon his two-year spell with Tottenham coming to an end off the back of a poor league campaign, Postecoglou did not announce his future plans. Taking on the Al-Ahli job would be a return to Asian football for the 59-year-old, having previously won Japan's top flight with Yokohama F. Marinos before winning the domestic treble with Scottish giants Celtic. Originally published as Hint over Ange Postecoglou's next club after Tottenham sacking, link to big-money suitor emerges

Takeaways from Arizona Cardinals' offseason program The team is healthy While a handful of players were limited in action in practices, by and large, it was all players coming off of injuries last season. They avoided any new injuries, which is key. It appears that every one should be ready to go once training camp roles around in a few weeks. No drama Everyone was in attendance when they needed to be. No one said anything outlandish. There have been no contract issues. Angry Rory McIlroy narrowly survives cut at US Open

An angry Rory McIlroy needed a birdie on the last hole of his second round to make the cut at the US Open. McIlroy said before the tournament that he needed to shake off the hangover of his epic Masters win at Augusta National in April, but he could not have chosen a harder place to do that. The brutal Oakmont course in Pittsburgh has been chewing up and spitting out the best players in the world and McIlroy is one of them. Frustration boils over for Rory McIlroy after his approach shot on the 12th 😡 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) June 13, 2025 After a four-over-par 74 on Thursday, McIlroy had hopes of fighting back into contention in the second round, but he again struggled to tame the course, posting two double bogeys in the opening three holes. Such was his frustration, he launched his club in anger at the 12th hole after sending another shot into the unforgiving rough before smashing a tee marker on the 17th when finding the bunker. He produced some magic on the 18th with a stunning approach shot to five feet and converted for a birdie to reach six-under-par which keeps him around for the weekend. Whether he will be pleased about that or not is another story entirely and he will not be challenging for the title come Sunday night. See you this weekend, Rory. Our 2011 champion will make the cut at Oakmont. — U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2025 His late birdie did not quell the frustration enough for him to speak to the media as he skipped post-round duties for the sixth successive round at a major. American Ryder Cup player Sam Burns tops the leaderboard, making a mockery of everyone else's struggles with a head-scratching five-under-par 65. 'I didn't really think of much of a score before. The golf course is really too difficult to try to figure out what's a good score and what's not,' Burns said. 'You're really just shot by shot and trying to play each hole the best you can. 'There's obviously a lot of golf left on a very tough golf course. It's a 72-hole golf tournament, and if you can get a round under par out here, no matter if it's one under, you'll take it.' Burns sits one shot clear of first-round leader JJ Spaun, who carded a two-over 72 to sit on two-under-par. Spaun said: 'I knew it would be hard to back up a bogey-free four-under at Oakmont in the US Open. So I'm just glad that I kept it together. I'm two over today, but given where we are that's a pretty good score.' It is no wonder the players have been calling the terrifying Pennsylvania course Transylvania as Viktor Hovland, at one-under-par, is the only other player under par at the halfway mark of the tournament. World number one Scottie Scheffler reckons he is still in the mix, despite sitting seven shots off the lead. Scheffler, who was seen angrily remonstrating with his coach after his round, carded a 71 to sit four-over-par but is not ruling himself out. 'It felt like me getting away with one over today wasn't all that bad. It could have been a lot worse,' he said. Bryson's quest for a third U.S. Open 🏆 has come to an end in 2025. He will miss the cut at +10. — U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2025 'I'm definitely not out of the tournament. Today I think with the way I was hitting it, it was easily a day I could have been going home, but I battled pretty hard to stay in there.' There have been plenty of high-profile casualties, none more so than defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who will go home after finishing on a bruising 10-over-par. Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood and Gary Woodland also get the weekend off. It could also be a farewell to the US Open for Phil Mickelson, who could not fina a birdie at the final hole to make the cut. Mickelson admits he is unlikely to play this tournament again unless he can win next month's Open at Portrush or hope for a USGA exemption.
