The general secretary of the proscribed CPI(Maoist), Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju, was killed in an exchange of fire with the Chhattisgarh police on May 21 in the Indravati area of Abujhmad (the unknown hills). Not less than 26 members of his security posse/component, widely known as CC (central committee) protection company (Company No. 7 of People's Liberation Guerrilla Army— PLGA), also got killed in the firefight, which continued for over three days. One jawan of district Narayanpur was martyred in the first burst of bullets from the Maoists. This operation was conducted exclusively by the District Reserve Guards (DRG) of Narayanpur, Bijapur, and Dantewada. The operation was planned and executed under the supervision of Prabhat Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Narayanpur, of the 2019 IPS batch.
In yet another tough operation, 31 Maoists were killed in a 21-day long joint operation conducted by the CRPF and DRG (and STF) on the steep Karregutta hills (spread over about 50 km x 10 km), which separate district Bijapur (of Chhattisgarh) from Telangana. As these hills were of great strategic importance for the Maoists, they planted a large number of IEDs (over 400 detected and diffused) to deter security forces from approaching them. The humidity was so intense that some jawans had to be evacuated by air due to exhaustion. The Superintendent of Police, Bijapur, Jitendra Yadav, from the 2018 IPS batch, demonstrated his capabilities in the successful execution of the operation and ensured proper coordination among the forces. One can gauge the importance of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) by the fact that over 50 battalions of them are deployed in Chhattisgarh, and they occupy the most forward posts.
Records show that Maoist violence has declined over the past many years. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reduced the number of districts under its security-related expenditure (SRE) scheme from 72 in 10 states in 2021 to 58 (with 38 designated as LWE-affected) in eight states during a review in March 2024. In another review in April 2025, this number further reduced from 38 in eight states to 18 in seven states. The number of LWE-affected districts in Chhattisgarh reduced from 15 to 7 in the same period. While it does not seem the Maoist organisations have disappeared from the unclassified districts, their mass base and violence have surely declined

Kaur's body was recovered after local people noticed a foul odour emanating from a parked car and alerted the authorities, the police said. Sources in the Bathinda police revealed that the death had occurred at least 24 to 48 hours before the body was discovered. Ludhiana-based Kamal Kaur, believed to be in her early to mid-30s, had been active on social media under the names 'Kamal Kaur Live' and 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi'. While her official account 'Kamal Kaur Live' had around 15.7K followers, her primary Instagram account had over 3,83,000 followers. She was known for uploading reels, including controversial double-entendre videos that often went viral. Unconfirmed reports suggested that Kaur may have been facing threats. In 2024, she was allegedly warned by individuals claiming links with Canada-based Khalistani extremist Arsh Dalla. The threats reportedly urged her to stop posting 'vulgar' content, though no formal complaint had been registered at the time. 'Kamal Kaur's mother told police that her daughter had left the house on June 9, saying that she was going to Bathinda regarding a promotional event,' said Narinder Singh, Superintendent of Police, Bathinda Sources close to the investigation said the vehicle in which the body was found bore a fake number plate, and forensic evidence indicates that the woman may have been murdered elsewhere and her body was later dumped inside the vehicle at the location. 'We have got some leads in this case and we are hopeful of cracking it soon,' Amneet Kondal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bathinda, told The Indian Express. Sources revealed that as per the CCTV footage, the car, registered in Ludhiana, entered the parking lot of Adesh University on June 10 early morning, and was driven by a turbaned person. The driver parked the vehicle in the parking area and left on foot, said another officer. The police have registered a murder case and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas, as well as mobile tower location data. According to the police, efforts are underway to trace the movement of the car and establish whether it was parked at the location for an extended period. The investigation team is also probing any recent threats or disputes in her personal or professional life. The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide clarity on the cause and time of death. Rs 1.87 cr in fake currency seized in Hubballi
Hubballi: In a major crackdown on counterfeit currency circulation, the Hubballi-Dharwad Police have seized fake currency with face value of ₹1.87 crore and arrested a man who allegedly duped a Pune-based real estate businesswoman by promising her a low-interest loan. Commissioner of Police N. Shashikumar, addressing a press conference on Monday, revealed that the accused, identified as Sudheer Mehta alias Mohammad Asif, was arrested in connection with a case registered at the Vidyanagar Police Station. According to police, Asif had approached Ashwini Pedawad, a real estate entrepreneur in Pune, and her daughter Prithala, claiming he could arrange a Rs50 crore loan at a low interest rate for a construction project. He demanded Rs60 lakh as a 'processing fee.' After receiving the genuine cash, Asif handed over fake currency amounting to Rs2 crore. Shocking the victims, almost all the notes handed over turned out to be counterfeit Rs500 denomination notes. Only Rs5,000 among the seized currency was genuine. The fraudulent transaction came to light when the victims attempted to verify the accused had used a separate mobile number to contact Prithala and carried out the transaction discreetly. He reportedly assured them that the funds were legitimate and ready for disbursal, further convincing them to proceed with the deal. During the investigation, police also seized a Ford EcoSport car used by the accused, and further inquiry revealed that the counterfeit notes were allegedly brought from Tamil Nadu. The suspect has a history of similar fraudulent activities and police believe he may be part of a larger counterfeit currency network. Police Commissioner Shashikumar urged the public to come forward if they have fallen victim to similar schemes. 'Anyone who has been duped by this individual or suspects similar fraud should immediately report to the nearest police station,' he have intensified their probe to identify other members of the racket and the source of the fake currency.
