Holidaymakers facing chaos as UK travel company loses ATOL licence

Daily Record16-06-2025
The travel provider has ceased trading as an ATOL holder, meaning customers' holidays are in doubt
Holidaymakers have been left in limbo this summer after a travel company lost its ATOL protection. Great Little Escapes, a firm based in Berkshire, ceased to be a holder of an Air Travel Organisers' Licence (ATOL) on Friday, June 13.
The downgrading has thrown holiday plans into chaos for its customers. Great Little Escapes, which is based in Berkshire, sold holiday packages and claimed to offer the "best cheap breaks in the UK".

On the company's website it says: "Holidays to the most iconic cities in the world. Find your next city break with Great Little Escapes." But it is feared that thousands of summer breaks are now at risk after the company stopped trading as an ATOL holder last week.

An ATOL is crucial for companies selling holidays that include flights.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said Great Little Escapes traded under several names. The CAA advised concerned customers they were working to gather information at this time and would provide updates when they could.
They said: "The company based in Sandhurst, Berkshire, traded under the names Your Holidays, Great Little Escapes, Tunisia First and websites www.themaldives.co.uk, www.yourholidays.co.uk, www.thecaribbean.com and www.greatlittleescapes.co.uk.
"We are currently collating information from the company and will update this page as soon as possible. Whilst waiting for further information, please do not submit a claim as these will be rejected."
The company is different from and not connected in any way to Great Little Breaks.

The ATOL scheme is a UK financial protection scheme which aims to protect those who book package holidays with flights.
The CAA also issued advice to travel agents saying: 'If you are a travel agent of Great Little Escapes LLP and you are currently holding consumer payments which you have not yet paid to Great Little Escapes LLP, you must not use these funds to refund consumers until you have received instructions from the Air Travel Trust.
"Travel agents will be individually contacted by the CAA with specific instructions for these bookings."

The closure follows Balkan Holidays ceased trading in the UK in April and cancelled all future trips. Customers were left scrambling to make other arrangements.
The company was founded in 1966 and specialised in trips to the Balkan region of Europe. This included trips to Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Malta and Northern Cyprus.

Those who had booked holidays were told to expect refunds in the coming weeks.
Also in April, Jetline Travel went into administration. It came a month after the 25-year-old company's ATOL status was removed. It also traded under several other names including Bargain Late Holidays, Best Priced Holidays, Cruise and More, Elegant Getaways, Our Best Holidays and Save on Sun.
The London-based company is also the parent of Jetline Cruise.

Aldi's 'lush' homeware item for under £4 is 'the perfect autumn treat'

Autumn enthusiasts can't stop gushing over these candles on social media. One of the things we love about autumn is all the seasonal homeware on offer. From soft blankets to home fragrances, it's truly the season to feel cosy. ‌ For the avid fans of the chillier season, the darker and colder weather means it's time to stock up on some candles to fill the entire home space with warming and often spicy scents. ‌ If there's one aroma that is the OG of the season it is pumpkin spice, which is exactly why Aldi shoppers have been excited to get their hands on one of the supermaket's bestselling candles that they "can't wait to use." ‌ Available in stores now is the highly coveted Hotel Collection Pumpkin Spice Candle (300g) that costs just £3.99. Perfect for creating a seasonal ambience, this twin-wick candle offers warming notes of clove, cinnamon and caramel. Now available to buy in the supermarket's middle aisle, the affordable homeware item is said to offer a burn time of approximately 39 hours. There's also two other scents that are ideal for the upcoming colder nights - fallen leaves and vanilla pumpkin. However, it is worth noting that, as is the case with all Specialbuys, they will only be around while stocks last, and they have been known to sell out almost as soon as they go available. It is worth noting that, while the small candle trio will look ideal on any home surface, autumn enthusiasts can also bag two of the bestselling scents - pumpkin spice and fallen leaves - in a much larger jar. ‌ The supermarket is also stocking its popular Hurricane Hotel Collection Candles that cost £19.99 for a whopping 2.1kg, with a burn time said to be approximately an impressive 140 hours. As for the smaller 300g Pumpkin Spice Candle, it has already attracted several comments from shoppers on Instagram who have said that they "smell lush" and are the "perfect autumn treat." The full Aldi post read: "This Pumpkin Spice Candle is the little treat we didn't know we needed (but definitely do). Who's ready for Autumn? Autumn Candle £3.99 each in store now!" ‌ One eager shopper commented: "Bought two yesterday can't wait to use them! They smell gorgeous." A second enthusiastic shopper added: "Bought this Pumpkin Spice today, gorgeous candle & smells lush. Perfect autumn treat." ‌ A third wrote: "The only reason why I can't wait for autumn." While a fourth added: "Bought them all." ‌ Alongside the Hotel Collection Trio and the Hurricane Candles, Aldi is gearing up for these colder, darker autumnal nights by bringing back its Decorative Pumpkin Candle for just £6.99, alongside a selection of seasonal reed diffusers. Shoppers can bag Aldi's Hotel Collection Pumpkin Spice Candle (300g, £3.99) and the full range of autumn candles in stores now.

Russia orders state-backed MAX messenger app, a WhatsApp rival, pre-installed on phones and tablets

MOSCOW, Aug 21 (Reuters) - A Russian state-backed messenger application called MAX, a rival to WhatsApp that critics say could be used to track users, must be pre-installed on all mobile phones and tablets from next month, the Russian government said on Thursday. The decision to promote MAX comes as Moscow is seeking greater control over the internet space as it is locked in a standoff with the West over Ukraine, which it casts as part of an attempt to shape a new world order. The Russian government said in a statement that MAX, which will be integrated with government services, would be on a list of mandatory pre-installed apps on all "gadgets," including mobile phones and tablets, sold in Russia from September 1. State media says accusations from Kremlin critics that MAX is a spying app are false and that it has fewer permissions to access user data than rivals WhatsApp and Telegram. It will also be mandatory that from September 1, Russia's domestic app store, RuStore, which is pre-installed on all Android devices, will be pre-installed on Apple devices. A Russian-language TV app called LIME HD TV, which allows people to watch state TV channels for free, will be pre-installed on all smart TVs sold in Russia from January 1, the government added. The push to promote homegrown apps comes after Russia said this month it had started restricting some calls on WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab, and on Telegram, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases. WhatsApp, which in July had a reach of 97.3 million in Russia, responded by accusing Moscow of trying to block Russians from accessing secure communications, while Telegram, which had a reach of 90.8 million users, said it actively combats the harmful use of its platform. The third most popular messenger app in July, according to Mediascope data, was VK Messenger at 17.9 million people, an offering from the same state-controlled tech company VK ( opens new tab which developed MAX. MAX said this week that 18 million users had downloaded its app, parts of which are still in a testing phase. Russia's interior ministry said on Wednesday that MAX was safer than foreign rivals, but that it had arrested a suspect in the first fraud case using the new messenger.

The Scottish city that is more expensive than Amsterdam for stag and hen dos

The Scottish city is in third place within the UK and eighth overall across Europe A Scottish city has been ranked among the costliest stag and hen party locations in the UK, with guests paying eye-watering sums that rival the cost of the wedding itself. ‌ A new report from wedding planning platform Bridebook reveals that attending a hen party in the Scottish capital can cost an average of £1,467 over a typical Friday-to-Monday trip. This puts Edinburgh in third place within the UK and eighth overall across Europe. Only London and Oxford ranked higher domestically. ‌ The study factored in accommodation, travel, food, drink, and activities. In Edinburgh, the biggest expense comes from accommodation, averaging £648 for a long weekend. ‌ Luxuries such as spa days (£200), hefty taxi fares (£235), and alcohol (£264) quickly drive costs up. For many guests, this means parting with nearly four per cent of their annual salary to attend a single pre-wedding celebration. Shockingly, the capital even outranks popular European hotspots such as Amsterdam and Mallorca, where flights are included in the costs. For stag parties, Edinburgh is scarcely cheaper. A three-night stay averages £1,248, making it the third priciest city in the UK and again eighth overall. Accommodation (£648) and transport (£235) remain the biggest drains, though cheaper activities, such as go-karting (£47), and slightly lower alcohol spending (£198) prevent the totals from matching the hen party costs. Friends of the groom still face parting with over three percent of their annual income to celebrate. Even Dublin, long considered a notoriously pricey stag and hen destination, comes in lower than Edinburgh. ‌ A weekend in the Irish capital averages £528 for accommodation, £218 for alcohol and £38 for flights, leaving it lagging behind Scotland's capital despite the added cost of travel. Hamish Shephard, founder of Bridebook, said the financial burden of pre-wedding events is becoming a serious concern for guests. ‌ 'For guests, hen and stag dos are often as big a financial commitment as the wedding itself, with many facing substantial costs just to attend. "With travel, accommodation and activities often falling on the wedding party, it's no wonder that some are spending nearly as much as the couple themselves!' 'It's important to remember that while weddings, including pre-wedding parties, are of course a celebration of love and friendship, couples should be mindful of the financial strain these events can place on their closest friends. "Clear communication and advance planning can help ensure guests aren't left feeling stretched by the cost of attending these celebrations, especially in overseas and urban locations.' Bridebook's 2025 Wedding Report also revealed that nearly half of stag and hen parties cover the cost for the bride or groom, yet guests are still left facing staggering bills that often run into the thousands.
