Belgian Grand Prix delayed by rain
The cars were brought into the pit lane and the starting procedure halted.
"I can't see a lot behind the safety car so I can't imagine what it's like for everyone else," McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris, who is nine points behind championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri, said over the team radio.
The Briton said later the standing water was not too bad but visibility was the problem.
After an hour of waiting, with drivers debating how to proceed, the FIA said they hoped to start as soon as standing water was cleared.
The FIA added that the clock had not formally started on the race, meaning a three hour rule did not apply.
The rain-affected 2021 Belgian Grand Prix remains the shortest race in Formula One history with only three laps completed behind the safety car and half points awarded.
"That's a bit silly. We should just run," said Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen over the radio when the red flags were shown. "They're way too cautious.
"And now the rain is coming, the heavy rain."
Nico Rosberg, the retired 2016 world champion, told Sky Sports television that there was little drivers could do other than wait.
"The conditions out there are horrendous and the race start will be extremely difficult," said the German.
"You can't see anything. You have long straights but must stay flat, but you're blind, looking left or right at the wall to find a brake marker board."

Khachanov defeats Zverev to face Shelton in ATP Toronto final
KAREN Khachanov staged a remarkable comeback to defeat top seed Alexander Zverev in the ATP Toronto Masters semi-finals. The Russian triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) after saving a match point in the deciding set. Khachanov will now face American Ben Shelton, who overpowered Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final. Shelton secured his first back-to-back wins over top 10 opponents, showcasing his growing confidence. Khachanov, seeded 11th, admitted the match was physically and mentally gruelling. 'I had to dig deep and try my best,' he said after the nearly three-hour battle. Zverev struggled with 44 unforced errors, while Khachanov struck 29 winners. The German's backhand error at 6-6 in the final set proved decisive. Khachanov reflected on his past losses to Zverev, including the Tokyo Olympic final. 'Today was tough, but I'm happy things went my way,' he added. Shelton, ranked seventh, dominated Fritz with precise shot-making. A brief delay due to technical issues did not disrupt his rhythm. Fritz double-faulted on match point, smashing his racquet in frustration. Shelton praised his own improvements in execution and confidence. 'Beating two top 10 players back-to-back is huge for me,' he said. The final promises an exciting clash between Khachanov's resilience and Shelton's rising form. - AFP

Colapinto reported OK after crashing in F1 tyre test
ARGENTINE racer Franco Colapinto crashed in Formula One tyre testing at the Hungarian Grand Prix circuit on Wednesday and was reported unhurt after being taken to the medical centre, his Alpine team said. Renault-owned Alpine, Ferrari, McLaren and Racing Bulls are taking part in the two-day Pirelli test at the Hungaroring that followed on from last weekend's grand prix, the last before the sport's August break. Alpine said in a statement that Colapinto, who took over from reserve driver Paul Aron for the final day, had 'an incident' at turn 11, a right-handed curve that can be taken at 220kph. 'Franco was assessed on site at the medical centre and is OK,' they added. The team gave no details about how the crash happened or damage to the car. Colapinto, 22, replaced Australian Jack Doohan at Alpine after the first six races but has yet to finish higher than 13th for the team in seven starts. He did not start in Britain, after crashing in qualifying and then suffering a gearbox issue, and there has been speculation he could also be replaced before the end of the season. Teammate Pierre Gasly has scored all of last-placed Alpine's 20 points, with three scoring finishes in his last six races. Colapinto told reporters last week that he was lacking confidence in the car and struggling to turn into the corners in the way he would like. 'I didn't have this issue last year (in nine races for Williams), I could go straight in and be quick straight away. Now I'm struggling a bit more with that,' he said. 'Generally the car is a bit tricky on entries and that's what we are working on, on my side.'- REUTERS

German Mueller signs season-long deal with Vancouver Whitecaps
FORMER Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has signed a season-long deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club said on Wednesday Mueller, who turns 36 next month, decided to leave Bayern at the end of last season after 25 years with the German champions, helping them win 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Mueller has signed for the rest of the 2025 season, with the club holding an option to keep him in 2026 as a Designated Player -- a status that allows MLS teams to pay top salaries outside the league's salary cap. 'I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,' Mueller said in a statement. 'I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win.' 'This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership-- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver,' Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said. Mueller made 131 appearances for Germany, scoring 45 goals, and was instrumental in their 2014 World Cup triumph. He scored 250 goals and registered 276 assists from 756 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. The playmaker helped Bayern reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals in the United States last month, where they lost to eventual runners-up Paris St Germain. Mueller is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on August 13. Vancouver, who are second in the Western Conference, visit San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday - REUTERS
