UK Nationals looking to plan their summer holidays in Europe should brace themselves for extended border checks until later on in the year. This is due to the postponed launch of the European Union's (EU) new Entry and Exit System (EES). Rather than enjoying smooth digital processing, British travellers will need to step out of their vehicles at the border for biometric checks.
These checks will require fingerprinting and facial scans. Doug Bannister, the Chief Executive of the Port of Dover, has said that these biometric checks will be carried out manually until at least November 2025. The manual border checks will affect anyone entering the Schengen Area by car or bus.
Many have eagerly awaited the EU's EES, which was set to enhance border control by substituting traditional passport stamping with a digital biometric approach. Unfortunately, the EU has delayed the launch of its verification application due to some development challenges.
Bannister has said that the app will not be ready until at least November 2025. After that, the EES should be properly up and running.
The biometric checks are part of the EU's long-anticipated border modernisation efforts. However, recent updates indicate that key elements of the process will not be prepared in time for the initial launch.

In an attempt to ease delays as much as possible, the Port of Dover has reclaimed 13 hectares of land to be used for passengers exiting their cars for inspections. The extra land should help manage traffic flow throughout the upcoming peak summer travel season.
Until the EES is put in place, every UK traveller is required to complete the following checks at EU borders:
During the initial trip, fingerprints and facial images will be taken.
Passport numbers will be electronically connected to biometric information.
For future trips, this data will be checked to allow entry.
Manual stamping of passports will persist, which will increase processing times.
Expect manual fingerprint and facial scans
Even those who travel often will have to leave their vehicles for verification at each visit until the system is automated. To prevent delays and frustration during busy travel times, tourists from the UK should arrive at ports and borders well in advance, particularly at Dover.
They should also be ready for long lines and be prepared to exit vehicles for inspections. Have all necessary documents on hand, including valid passports and required travel paperwork. If travelling in groups, make sure everyone understands the process to reduce confusion. Also, try to stay informed with updates from the Port of Dover or EU travel advisory websites.

Once you sign up, returning travellers will be matched up using their biometric info and passport number, which will let them automatically track how long they stay in the Schengen zone. But until the pre-registration app is ready, biometric data will be collected only at the border, which could slow things down, especially at busy land crossings.

A huge cruise ship party has kicked off the biggest search for Pride of Britain nominations with a splash - as previous winners and hosts joined the big bash on P&O Cruise's flagship Britannia It didn't matter what the British weather did when Pride of Britain launched its 2025 search for unsung heroes, because when last year's Child of Courage Florrie Bark whizzed on deck in her electric chair – her glorious smile brought the sunshine. With newly grown curls peeking out of her vintage towelling cap, Florrie wore her sunglasses – so come rain or shine, the party on top of P&O Cruises's flagship Britannia to kick off the biggest and best ever search for nominations was going to be a splash. Excited to be catching up with last year's winners again, Pride of Britain hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo greeted winners and their families and all the guests as they came onboard. The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with P&O Cruises have been celebrating remarkable people young and old for 26 years. And Carol has been there for all of them. 'I know I also say Pride of Britain is not a show – it's a family, but it genuinely is a privilege and a joy,' said a very happy Carol as she hugged old friends. Also delighted to be back at the helm, Ashley added: 'We can't wait to do Pride of Britain every year. This year's so special because normally after the October awards, everyone goes back to their lives, but this time, we get to catch up with everyone again to launch our hunt for Pride of Britain's class of 2025.' Looking amazing in a royal blue jumpsuit, beside Ashley in a black leather shirt, not even the early thunderstorms were going to rain on Carol's parade at the impressive Pride of Britain launch parade., docked in Southampton, glistened in the sunshine. Guests gathered on the sun terrace on the ship's 17th floor, bedecked with multi-coloured flags, fluttering in the warm breeze over the azure blue swimming and paddling pools. Florrie giggled as she joined the party and spotted the silver and purple clad stilt-walkers dancing, as a brass band played a medley of pop classics, against a distant backdrop of little boats bobbing in the sparkling quayside water. The Isle of White car ferry sounded its fog horn as winners' families happily roasted each other with champagne and orange juice. Last year's winners have been enjoying holidays of a lifetime, thanks to P&O Cruises. And the holiday atmosphere continued on this magical day. 'On the top deck in the sunshine, it felt like we were on holiday with all the winners,' said Ashley. 'We always say Pride of Britain is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, but actually the extraordinary things they have done make them extraordinary!' After the drinks reception, winners and guests mingled with celebrities in the ship's elegant crow's nest, with its plush carpets and gold rails. Everyone gathered for the photo-call with Carol and Ashley, but the kids kept losing their trophies, which just made Florrie giggle more. Little action man Jacob Newsom, who won Fundraiser of the Year, used the chairs in the lounge like an obstacle course, and was rolling around the floor as Carol and Ashley looked on amused. 'I like having an audience,' he yelled, possibly ruining the entire TV interview, but nobody minded. After losing his mum to breast cancer when he was seven, Jacob, now 11, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities. 'I want to be a fighter pilot when I grow up – or a doctor, so I can cure cancer.' Eight-year-old Florrie feels the same. Cancer has touched her life and although her hair is now growing back, she is waiting for a lung transplant. 'I want to be a cancer nurse when I grow up – or like Barbie,' she said sweetly. Lunch was served in the ship's swish Limelight Club, where a pianist tinkled away on the grand piano. Carol chatted with Agnes Nesbitt and Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, who both won special recognition awards for founding their charities, over a delicious lunch of beef fillet or sea bream. Ashley and Molly Leonard sat together and caught up on how the award has changed the 27-year-old's life since she won Young Achiever of the Year for her mental health work through crafting. Jeff Brazier - this year's red carpet host - had everyone laughing as he interrupted Ashley's pudding and made him come up on stage to talk about what Pride of Britain meant to him - reminding Carol this was her 26th year. 'When this all began we had 20 categories – and it took four and a half hours on the night – so I pleaded for a co-host,' Carol told the audience, which included Emily Greenwood who was recognised for Outstanding Bravery after she risked own life to swim into icy winter seas in Cornwall. Carol's wish was answered when Ashley came on board five years ago. 'And I really need him when I walk down the stairs on stage in stilettos,' she joked. 'I am Carol's mobile banister,' agreed Ashley, revealing: 'I was asked to collect donations in a bucket for my first year,' he laughed. The Diversity choreographer admits it's changed his life. 'Especially since becoming a dad. Just keeping it together is hard enough for me. 'When I see children like Florrie, I just don't know how parents cope. It really touches me.' Host Jeff chatted to last year's winners Molly and Michelle Tolley about how life changing it was to be nominated. Michelle, from Norfolk, turned 60 on her cruise to the Canary Islands. 'My husband and I renewed our vows for our 40th wedding anniversary – so I was queen of that ship!' Telling the audience she didn't know who nominated her for her work campaigning for victims of the NHS blood scandal, she said: 'There are so many amazing people in the world, there are not enough awards to go around. Infected with Hepatitis C after receiving transfusions, Michelle added: 'Being nominated was life affirming to me – it highlighted our cause and so many people got tested because of it.' Everyone gathered on the top deck to watch as Carol and Ashley cut the ribbon on the brand new nominations booths, which will be popping up all over the country, as the ship set sail on its cruise round the British Isles. For those thinking of nominating someone, Carol explained: 'None of our winners ever set off to win a Pride of Britain Award. Some are caught up in a moment and they find their courage and others are courageous for years and years and decide to help other people.' Finally, it was time for last year's winners to hand on the baton – a Pride of Britain trophy – to the Captain of P&O Cruises Britannia, Paul Brown, who proudly received it and will now sail around the British Isles looking for your nominations. Carol reminded everyone how Pride of Britain is needed more than ever now, saying: 'The world has got noisier and all the news is about people who have behaved badly towards each other. But Pride reminds us of how many good people there are.' Encouraging people to vote for their unsung heroes, she added: 'This is the launch of the nominations process – and then it's throttle to the floor now as we start contacting nominees secretly and surprise them with a celebrity ambush – like Ant and Dec!' As the day's festivities came to an end and the Pride of Britain party left the ship, genuine holidaymakers embarking for their cruise were wondering as they waited for lifts why Carol, Ashley and Jeff had come on their holiday. It might sound like the first-class cabin of an airline, but I'm actually on a Polish train. The British equivalent would be taking a train from London to Glasgow. But you'd need to add a zero to the price at peak times. Gdansk wears its history lightly but respectfully. This is where World War Two started, when the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein bombed the port of what was then called Danzig. There's a huge museum in a slanting building dedicated to the conflict ( which takes pains to concentrate on witness testimonies from ordinary Polish citizens who lived through the war. The sheer size of the tank that sits on a recreated city street puts paid to any Hollywood notions of war being anything other than an exercise in terror. Gdansk's nightlife is every bit as lively as you would expect from a port city, but the cliché of rough sailors' pubs has long gone. The Mercure Hotel offers knockout cocktails in its chic bar, while I also sampled sublime local vodkas to a DJ soundtrack amid the battered Chesterfield sofas inside Bar Lamus. The train south to Krakow takes just over five hours and runs right through the centre of the country. Leaving the Baltic coast, we passed vast fields of racing green, clusters of birch trees, red painted barns and deserted rural stations with flowerbeds outside. Iconic steam train Tornado delights crowds as it powers through Cornwall on rail tour Arrows of sunlight pierced tapering lanes and turned the glossy, depthless rivers and streams the colour of pewter. For a country that has seen so much bloodshed, from a high-speed train, the nation looks ordered, calm and reassuringly familiar — like the landscapes of Lincolnshire or Kent from half a century ago. As I order a glass of white wine, we run through the teeming cluster of Warsaw, with its mowed parks and jumble of new skyscrapers in the background. An afternoon nap was inviting, but I was once again transfixed by the landscapes as we rolled further south. But Krakow is the end of the high-speed line, and so I made my way on foot into the Old Town — a pleasing maze of arcades and courtyards that meanders past the majestic royal castle and cathedral on Wawel Hill and down to the Vistula River. Dinner came courtesy of Pod Baranem ( which looks like a Polish granny's living room but serves delicious plates of local classics such as dumplings stuffed with cottage cheese and roast veal with mushrooms. Back at the funky, loft-style Mercure Fabryczna hotel, I fell into bed feeling I needed to rethink my definitions of luxury travel. You don't need five-star cruise liners or infinite air miles to travel in style. A Polish train can make you feel pampered in a way that's unlikely to ever occur on National Rail.

Almost five million homeowners pay service fees, which have risen 11% in the last year to an average of £2,300 per month, according to Hamptons. While others have been hit by unfair charges. The government has planned to reform the system - but there are delays. This week JAMES FLANDERS explains how to challenge unfair charges. SOARING FEES Service charges are a fee paid by a leaseholder or resident set by a landlord. The amount varies each year depending on costs to the landlord. They can include charges for maintenance, repairs and insurance. The details are usually set out in your lease. The fee is usually set on what the landlord thinks they will spend. At the end of year the landlord should provide a statement. Detail of world's tallest apartment block revealed - including price of penthouses Some leases allow landlords to ask for contributions towards a "sinking fund" to build up reserves for future larger scale works. David Fell, lead analyst at Hamptons, said: "Both buyers and mortgage lenders have become increasingly cautious about committing to high service charge costs, particularly where they perceive charges to be disproportionate to the amenities they get in return. "As a result, would-be sellers paying high charges have often seen the value of their homes rise more slowly or even fall. "In some cases, sellers are offering potential buyers a cash contribution towards future service charge payments." 3 Service fees have rocketed over the past five years, particularly in the North of England UNFAIR CHARGES Some leaseholders have found that they are being charged unfair fees. Tribunal judges have made some landlords pay back up to £100,000. In one example, they ruled that a £135 fee to change two light bulbs was excessive. In February 2023, it was revealed that landlords and insurance brokers were secretly taking up to 60% of the £1.6billion leaseholders paid for building insurance as hidden commissions. New rules now stop insurance companies from choosing policies just to earn the highest commission, helping leaseholders get better value. But brokers and managing agents are still allowed to take commissions. The government has promised to ban excessive building insurance commissions through the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024. Instead, landlords will only be able to charge a straightforward and fair "permitted insurance fee" for the work they actually do, making costs clearer and protecting leaseholders from hidden charges. However, these proposed laws still need further legislation to come into effect, and the government hasn't yet provided a timetable for this. New rules planned by the government also plan to introduce commonhold agreements to replace leasehold ones. Commonhold allows flat owners to jointly own and manage their buildings, cutting out landlords and property management companies. But the proposed rules only apply to new homes. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing said they know "far too many leaseholders" are being hit with "unreasonable and extortionate charges". A draft of the bill is expected later this year but leaseholders may have to wait months before it becomes law. 3 Leaseholders can challenge costs if they feel they are unreasonable, or if the standard of work is poor Credit: Getty HOW TO CHALLENGE FEES Leaseholders have a legal right within six months of receiving a summary of costs to request extra information from their landlord. You can challenge a cost if you think it's unreasonable, the standard of work is poor or you don't think you should be paying it. For example, you might question a fee for lift maintenance if you live in a ground-floor flat and it's not included in your lease. Or you could challenge charges for communal services, like a gym that's always closed or a concierge service that doesn't have staff. You will need to apply to a tribunal which has the power to rule on whether the service charge is reasonable or payable. In England this is the first-tier tribunal (property chamber). In Wales it's the leasehold valuation tribunal. Applying to the tribunal usually costs a fixed fee of £110, though this may be waived if you're on certain benefits. If your case is transferred from court to the tribunal, you'll only pay the difference between the court fees and the tribunal fee - or nothing if you've already paid more than £110 in court fees. If a hearing is scheduled, you'll need to pay an additional £220 hearing fee. Speak to the Leasehold Advisory Service online at or call them on 020 7832 2500 to find out more and get free advice on service charge issues. You could also apply to the Housing Ombudsman if you have a complaint about how your service charge fees have been managed. It says cases have jumped by 25 per cent in the last four years. If you're finding it hard to pay your service charges, there's support available. If you're on Universal Credit and have been receiving it for at least nine months, you could get help with your service charges if you own a leasehold property. People over the state pension age can also get support through pension credit. £5.3k charge but I waited months for vital repairs LAWYER Liam Spender, 41, thought he'd bought his dream home when he purchased his £591,000 two-bed flat six years ago. But within months it had turned into a nightmare. "I regret buying it to this day," said Liam, who lives in the Isle of Dogs, east London. Initially he paid a £4,200 a year service charge but it has rocketed to £5,300 in just four years - a 26% increase. A huge chunk of his bill - over £1,200 a year - was for buildings insurance, according to Liam. Yet, despite paying so much, Liam had to wait months for repairs after part of his flat's floor collapsed. To make matters worse, he discovered £300 of the insurance fee was being taken as commission by his landlord and their broker. In 2021, Liam teamed up with 103 homeowners in his building block and applied to the property tribunal. A few days before the case their landlord conceded and awarded the homeowners £100,000 in backdated commission payments. It meant that Liam got £300 back, while his neighbours in larger properties received significantly more. "There are millions of people like me in the same boat and they are owed money they don't even know about", said Liam, who has since founded Leaseholder Action to help other people being hit with secret commission fees. RIGHT TO MANAGE If you don't get anywhere by approaching your management company, you could take over managing the charges yourself via Right to Manage. It is a legal process where leasehold residents in flats can take over managing the maintenance and services. To do this, enough long-leaseholders (those with leases originally over 21 years) need to get together and form an RTM company. It costs £50 to set up a company and takes 24 hours to register. You then need to serve notice to the freeholder of the development - the person who owns the land - letting them know you are taking over the right to manage. They then have one month to dispute this. The government is also planning to remove the requirement for leaseholders to cover the landlords expenses during the process, which will save homeowners around £3,000. It's also not allowed if there are four or fewer flats and a landlord lives in the building. It could help you cut out management fee costs and charges for unnecessary work - but you will be responsible for the company and annual reporting. Unless one of you is trained in these areas you may need to take on an accountant or managing agent. Applications to set up RTM companies rose by 20% last year, according to Direct Line.
