‘Negative Trial': CM Flags Online Campaign Against Meghalaya Amid Indore Couple Case
Last Updated:
Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur for allegedly murdering her husband in Meghalaya, where they went on honeymoon.
Lauding the Meghalaya Police for cracking the case of the missing Indore couple on honeymoon, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday addressed the negative campaign online about tourism in the state after the news of the newlyweds surfaced.
As Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge on June 2, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, the Chief Minister said that the state police was under a lot of pressure as the matter pertained to guests from another state.
'I would like to thank DG, DIG, SP Police Department, who did a superb job under such difficult circumstances. There was a lot of pressure, especially since the case involved guests from another state. The police handled it well and brought the case to a logical conclusion," Sangma said while speaking with CNN-News18 on the case.
He said that the police did have several pieces of evidence since the beginning of the investigation, however, they waited to put them out in the open to protect the investigation.
'The terrain and geography made the investigation challenging. Although we had several pieces of evidence from the beginning, we didn't share them publicly to protect the investigation. The police worked very hard, and revealing more details earlier could have affected their work," the Chief Minister said.
He expressed anguish over the negative campaign run online against tourism in Meghalaya following the incident that came to the fore last month, and said that the people in the state treat tourists like family.
'There was a lot of negative trial, which was unfortunate. I have never seen such an incident in Meghalaya. We were all shocked, as people here treat tourists like family. It was hurtful to see such negative campaigns being spread," he said.
'There's something sinister brewing for a long time, and state police are just trying to hush it all up. A month or so back, a Hungarian tourist was found dead too. I keep reiterating this – Meghalaya is not a safe place, travel in groups, always, don't step out alone after it's dark," a user wrote on X.
Sonam was arrested in UP's Ghazipur earlier today, while four others have been arrested in the case so far, including her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, the police said.

MP Family, Meghalaya Murder, UP Arrest: What The Law Says About Multi-State Investigations
Last Updated: Since Raja Raghuvanshi's death took place in Shillong, Meghalaya Police has the legal authority to investigate, arrest, and prosecute, no matter where the accused is located What began as a romantic getaway ended in death, disappearance, and a trail of suspicion stretching across three states – Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Uttar Pradesh. Nine days after their wedding in Gwalior, newlyweds Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam set off for what was believed to be a honeymoon to the famed Kamakhya temple in Assam. But their journey took a fatal turn in Shillong, Meghalaya; and now, the bride stands accused of murder. Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found under suspicious circumstances in Shillong, and a postmortem report, along with evidence from the crime scene, triggered a murder investigation. But the prime suspect, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, vanished without a trace. Who Has The Right To Arrest? According to Indian criminal law, jurisdiction in murder cases lies with the state where the crime occurred. Since Raja's death took place in Shillong, Meghalaya Police has the legal authority to investigate, arrest, and prosecute, no matter where the accused is eventually located. This principle is grounded in Sections 156 and 166 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which empower police to pursue cross-state arrests through a process called 'transit remand". Before moving a suspect to another state, police must present her before a magistrate in the local jurisdiction – in this case, Ghazipur – and secure legal permission to transfer her. Mysterious Man Named Raj Kushwaha As the legal formalities unfold, the backstory of Raja and Sonam's relationship has come under renewed scrutiny. Raja's family insists it was an arranged marriage and claim the couple appeared happy in the early days. But cracks are now evident; not just in their brief union, but in the trail Sonam left behind. The family alleges that Sonam, far from being a grieving widow, was in touch with another man named Raj Kushwaha. Investigators are probing whether this alleged connection played a role in Raja's death. Mobile records and call logs are now key evidence, as police attempt to piece together whether Raja's murder was a crime of opportunity, or a premeditated act involving more than one person. Adding to the suspicion, Raja and Sonam reportedly had no return tickets booked from Shillong, an odd omission for a couple on their honeymoon. Raja's brother Vipin Raghuvanshi believes this was never a romantic trip at all, but a cold, calculated setup. 'This wasn't a honeymoon. It was a conspiracy," he told reporters, adding that if Raj Kushwaha was involved in the crime, then the plot was far deeper than anyone could imagine. What's Next In The Investigation? Meghalaya Police are now expected to appear before a court in Ghazipur to formally request transit remand. Once granted, Sonam will be taken back to Shillong for questioning. Investigators will analyse digital footprints, track Sonam's communications, and explore the possible involvement of Raj Kushwaha. Meanwhile, Raja's family is pushing for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing the multi-state nature of the case and potential conspiracy. Meghalaya murder case: ‘When she called me ...' — How Sonam's brother reacted after her phone call
NEW DELHI: The family of Sonam Raghuvanshi — accused of orchestrating her husband's murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya — met her after police arrested her at a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Reacting to the arrest, Sonam's brother Govind said, 'When she called me, I got emotional and informed the police. Until I meet her, I cannot say anything. I have been awake for the last 72 hours.' This follows Sonam's arrest around 3 a.m. on Monday after she called her family to reveal her location at a roadside eatery. Her family alerted Indore Police, who coordinated with Uttar Pradesh authorities. Ghazipur police took her for a medical examination before sending her to a One-Stop Centre. 'She will be handed over to Meghalaya Police, who are leading the investigation. UP Police have not interrogated her yet,' said ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash. Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the arrest of three men in overnight raids — one from Uttar Pradesh and two from Indore. All three have confessed to being hired by Sonam to kill her husband Raja. One accused, 21-year-old Akash Rajput, was arrested from Lalitpur district's Mahrauni area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police said he was known to co-accused Vishal Singh and Raj Kushwaha and traveled with them to Shillong. Raj Kushwaha, believed to be Sonam's lover, and Vishal Singh Chauhan alias Vikki were arrested earlier by Indore Police. All three reportedly worked at a private firm registered in the name of Sonam's brother, Gaurav Raghuvanshi, with Raj serving as the accountant. Police sources said Sonam has not disclosed her whereabouts during the time she was missing and only claimed to be 'unwell.' Akash, who holds a BBA degree from Indore, is currently being questioned about his role and motives. Meanwhile, Sonam's father, Devi Singh, defended her, insisting she is innocent and falsely implicated. 'My daughter is innocent. We demand a CBI probe to uncover the truth,' he said. The case came to light after the couple, recently married, went missing on May 23 during their honeymoon in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. They were last seen checking out of a homestay in Nongriat. Their rented scooter was later found abandoned near Sohrarim. Ten days later, Raja's body was found in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills. A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered nearby. Sonam had remained untraceable until Monday. Adding to the intrigue, a local tourist guide claimed to have seen the couple with three men on May 23 while they were trekking up from Nongriat. He said he had earlier offered his services to the couple, but they had hired another guide. Police say the probe is still underway, and further arrests are likely.
