MP Family, Meghalaya Murder, UP Arrest: What The Law Says About Multi-State Investigations

Since Raja Raghuvanshi's death took place in Shillong, Meghalaya Police has the legal authority to investigate, arrest, and prosecute, no matter where the accused is located
What began as a romantic getaway ended in death, disappearance, and a trail of suspicion stretching across three states – Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Uttar Pradesh. Nine days after their wedding in Gwalior, newlyweds Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam set off for what was believed to be a honeymoon to the famed Kamakhya temple in Assam. But their journey took a fatal turn in Shillong, Meghalaya; and now, the bride stands accused of murder.
Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found under suspicious circumstances in Shillong, and a postmortem report, along with evidence from the crime scene, triggered a murder investigation. But the prime suspect, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, vanished without a trace.
Who Has The Right To Arrest?
According to Indian criminal law, jurisdiction in murder cases lies with the state where the crime occurred. Since Raja's death took place in Shillong, Meghalaya Police has the legal authority to investigate, arrest, and prosecute, no matter where the accused is eventually located.
This principle is grounded in Sections 156 and 166 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which empower police to pursue cross-state arrests through a process called 'transit remand". Before moving a suspect to another state, police must present her before a magistrate in the local jurisdiction – in this case, Ghazipur – and secure legal permission to transfer her.
Mysterious Man Named Raj Kushwaha
As the legal formalities unfold, the backstory of Raja and Sonam's relationship has come under renewed scrutiny. Raja's family insists it was an arranged marriage and claim the couple appeared happy in the early days. But cracks are now evident; not just in their brief union, but in the trail Sonam left behind.
The family alleges that Sonam, far from being a grieving widow, was in touch with another man named Raj Kushwaha. Investigators are probing whether this alleged connection played a role in Raja's death. Mobile records and call logs are now key evidence, as police attempt to piece together whether Raja's murder was a crime of opportunity, or a premeditated act involving more than one person.
Adding to the suspicion, Raja and Sonam reportedly had no return tickets booked from Shillong, an odd omission for a couple on their honeymoon. Raja's brother Vipin Raghuvanshi believes this was never a romantic trip at all, but a cold, calculated setup.
'This wasn't a honeymoon. It was a conspiracy," he told reporters, adding that if Raj Kushwaha was involved in the crime, then the plot was far deeper than anyone could imagine.
What's Next In The Investigation?
Meghalaya Police are now expected to appear before a court in Ghazipur to formally request transit remand. Once granted, Sonam will be taken back to Shillong for questioning. Investigators will analyse digital footprints, track Sonam's communications, and explore the possible involvement of Raj Kushwaha.
Meanwhile, Raja's family is pushing for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing the multi-state nature of the case and potential conspiracy.

Machete to ‘kill' Raja bought in Guwahati: Cops

Guwahati: The 'dao' (machete) allegedly used in the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi was bought somewhere in Guwahati and did not resemble the ones used locally, the police said on Monday. The recovery of the 'dao' on June 2 led to the discovery of Raja's body near the Weisawdong Falls the same day. Raja and his wife, Sonam, who were on a honeymoon trip to Sohra, had gone missing on May 23. While Raja's body was found, Sonam remained untraced until she surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night. Two days after the recovery of Raja's body, police sources said the machete recovered from the gorge does not resemble those traditionally used in Meghalaya, and the handle of the machete is also uncommon in the region. Besides the 'dao', police also found a smashed mobile phone in the gorge. The probe was carried out by a SIT led by SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor. The team includes four deputy SPs and two sub-inspectors. East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said preliminary probe reveals a cut injury with a sharp weapon on the back of Raja's head. The traditional 'dao', called the 'Khasi dao', is a traditional single-edged sword used by the Khasis in Meghalaya.

Probe launched against Tripura Cong leader for ‘defaming' CM

Agartala: Police on Monday launched a search against Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesperson Md Sahajan Islam for alleged defaming narratives and expressions against chief minister Manik Saha on Sunday night in a Facebook live. The officer-in-charge of East Agartala police station, Rana Chatterjee, said Sahajan's deliberation has triggered political unrest and hurt the communal sentiment of the people. He had made derogatory comments on the professional and personal life of the CM that is completely illegal. "Indian law doesn't permit the citizen to make a personal attack on the head of a state," Chatterjee said, adding that a specific case has been registered against Islam, who is absconding, based on a complaint and police have also launched an investigation. He allegedly made several posts on social media in communal lines alleging that saffron cadres obstructed the celebration of Bakri Eid in several locations of the state, and in a few places, they stopped the transportation of cows.

Pak couple dead in flat, cops suspect murder-suicide

Navi Mumbai: A 45-year-old Pakistani national is suspected to have stabbed to death his wife, also a Pakistani, with a kitchen knife and then died by suicide at their rental flat in Kharghar on Monday. The wife had stab injuries on the neck, back and shoulder. Deepak Surve, senior inspector, Kharghar police, said the man, Notan Das alias Sanjay Sachdeva, was accused of assaulting his wife, Sapna Das (35), in front of some neighbours last month, but the woman refused to lodge a complaint against him. The couple arrived in India with their two minor children on long-term visa more than six months ago. Sapna's sister, Sangeeta Makhija, who is an Indian citizen, took a flat on rent for them in Dolphine Pride Society in Sector 34, Kharghar. Makhija was reportedly taking care of their financial needs. A senior police officer said following the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan, the couple was in the process of completing the administrative formalities of returning home. Surve said when the younger child returned from his coaching class on Monday, he found the main door locked from the inside. His sibling was not at home either. "There was no response to repeated knocks. The child sought the help of a neighbour, who entered the flat through a common balcony. The neighbour found the couple in a pool of blood," said Surve. After last month's alleged assault, Makhija had sought police's help but they expressed helplessness after Sapna refused to file a complaint.
