Trent Alexander-Arnold announces his Liverpool exit paving way for Real Madrid move
Trent Alexander-Arnold has announced he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, paving the way for a summer move to Real Madrid. The England defender's current deal with the newly crowned Premier League champions ends this summer and he has long been linked with a switch to the Spanish capital. Alexander-Arnold described the call to end his 20-year association with Liverpool as 'easily the hardest decision I've ever made in my life' saying he felt the time was right 'to experience a new challenge'. The 26-year-old has made 352 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 23 goals and supplying 92 assists, winning the Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, Uefa Champions League, two Premier League titles, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup, along the way. This season, he has helped guide Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight crown, matching the total of bitter rivals Manchester United. 'I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven't spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team's best interests, which was securing No. 20,' he said in a post on X. "This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years. From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. 'I will forever be in debt to you all. But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally.' The futures of Alexander-Arnold, captain Virgil van Dijk and star attacker Mohamed Salah had been a source of relentless speculation this season with the contracts of all three due to end this summer. But while Van Dijk and Salah decided to prolong their Liverpool careers, Alexander-Arnold has called time on his and is set for a fresh new chapter in his career, almost certainly at 15-time European champions Real Madrid. He is set to join England teammate Jude Bellingham in the Spanish capital while also following in the footsteps of Steve McManaman and Michael Owen who made the move from Liverpool to Madrid in 1999 and 2004, respectively. 'There's a lot I would like to say,' Alexander-Arnold added, directly addressing the Liverpool fans. 'The main thing is a massive thank you. You guys have been there from the start with me, you guys have supported me, been there. 'I've felt the support, the love, everything that you guys have done has never been unnoticed by me, I've loved every single minute of it. I hope they have felt that has been reciprocated and that I've given everything I could to the club. 'I'm just hoping that we're able to carry on winning games, the noise [around my decision] doesn't take away from the fact of what we've achieved this season. 'It has been an amazing season. It has been amazing to be part of it and I just hope that everyone is able to maybe not dwell on this news for too long and be able to celebrate what the rest of the lads have done.' Liverpool said in statement on the club website that Alexander-Arnold 'will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for his contribution during a sustained period of success'. The Merseysiders currently lead second placed Arsenal at the top of the table by 15 points, despite losing 3-1 at Chelsea on Sunday in what was only their third league defeat this season. They have three more games to play, at home to the Gunners on Sunday, followed by Brighton away and then Crystal Palace at home which should see Alexander-Arnold play his final game at Anfield in Liverpool colours.

Pep dreams of WC glory, rules out plans to leave City anytime soon
Pep Guardiola has no plans to leave Manchester City anytime soon but the Spaniard has often thought about what it would be like to guide an international team and says he would love to take on the challenge of a World Cup or Euros campaign. 'I would love to be in a World Cup, in a Euro, a Copa America,' Guardiola said. 'I have always thought about it. But it depends on many, many things. If it happens, it's fine. If it doesn't happen, it's more than fine as well.' After winning 12 domestic top-flight titles across Spain, Germany and England, Guardiola endured a trophyless campaign with City last season, a shock to the system after so much success. While he came in for some stinging criticism over his elite squad's failure on all fronts, Guardiola said he was not interested in 'proving the haters wrong' when City start afresh next season. 'It's to prove myself that I can do it, I don't want to have those feeling that last season left' he added. 'Because when we win, the wine tastes better afterwards, you sleep better. I don't know a manager who loses games and sleeps like a baby. It doesn't happen. You've got to worry. That's part of our life.' Top of Guardiola's 'to-do list' is to win another Champions League with City and should they cross paths once more with Real Madrid, his nemesis Carlo Ancelotti will not be in the opposing dugout after the Italian took charge of Brazil. Mere mention of Ancelotti's departure was enough to put a smile on Guardiola's lips. The pair faced each other five times in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, with the Italian coming out on top in all but one. 'I'm so happy for him,' Guardiola said. 'But I'm so happy that he's not in Madrid anymore because all the time he beats me. That I don't have to handle it anymore.' The Spaniard added that it was unrealistic to expect him to win everything every year, and said that even the most successful athletes lose more than they win. 'I won 12 domestic leagues in 16 years. It's not bad, I would say. But you cannot win all the time. I cannot win the Champions League all the time,' he added. 'Michael Jordan, the best athlete I've ever seen in my life won six NBA Championships in 15 years. Tiger Woods, one incredible golf player, Jack Nicklaus, I don't know how many he has. But they lost more Grand Slams than they won. It happens.' Agencies

Liverpool turn down Barcelona's approach for winger Luis Diaz
5 June 2025 18:53 LONDON (PA Media/dpa)Liverpool have rebuffed an approach by Barcelona for winger Luis Colombia international has been a target for the La Liga champions for some time, although he has also been attracting interest from Saudi Pro League side last month Barça's sporting director Deco publicly named Diaz, and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, when talking about their transfer the PA news agency understands when the Catalan club made an approach to Liverpool on Wednesday they were told they had no intention of turned 28 in January and has two years remaining on his current deal but it is believed there are currently no plans to open negotiations on any with Darwin Nunez expected to depart this summer and the future of Federico Chiesa in doubt after a frustrating debut season in which he made just 14 appearances, Arne Slot's Premier League-winning forward line already looks like losing two of its arrival of Florian Wirtz, with discussions ongoing with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer fee after a recent £109 million ($148.3 million) bid was rejected, will likely offset the impact of that - especially as Nunez and Chiesa contributed just nine goals between it is understood potentially losing a third member of the attack would only be sanctioned if there was a bid which allows Liverpool tosignificantly improve the team or if the player agitated for a month Diaz told American-Spanish television channel Telemundo: "For me, I'd stay however many years it takes."Liverpool have already recruited Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen to strengthen their right side following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and are looking to bolster the left with a move for Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez. UAE bid to keep World Cup hopes alive with victory over Uzbekistan
The UAE stand in Uzbekistan's way with the Central Asian nation on the verge of securing FIFA World Cup qualification for the first time. Timur Kapadze's Uzbekistan only need to avoid defeat against UAE in their AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 Group A tie to join Islamic Republic of Iran at next year's global extravaganza. The UAE, however, will go into the tie at the Al Nahyan Stadium determined to - at the very least - delay Uzbekistan's celebrations. Seeking a second appearance at the FIFA World Cup, UAE still have an outside chance of securing an automatic ticket and will have Romanian tactician Cosmin Olariu leading them for the first time. They sit on 13 points, four behind Uzbekistan but with just two matches remaining, their fate is out of their hands but Olariu has vowed they will do their best to keep their dream of automatic qualification alive. Stopping history-seeking Uzbekistan won't be easy, with the White Wolves having suffered defeat only once in their qualifying campaign. The players, said defender Rustam Ashurmatov, are determined to realise the dreams of their nation. 'We give our all in every match. We go to the field only to win. I think our team is capable of this - we will win,' said Ashurmatov to local media. Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui will be aiming to get his tenure off to a winning start when Qatar host Islamic Republic of Iran in Group A of the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 on Thursday. While Iran have already confirmed their FIFA World Cup 2026 appearance, Qatar's hopes depend on them advancing from the playoffs, with automatic qualification no longer an option. Such have two-time AFC Asian Cup winners Qatar's troubles been that Lopetegui will be the third head coach in charge of their qualifying campaign. With an automatic spot out of reach, former Spain and Real Madrid manager Lopetegui has to ensure the West Asian side finish a minimum fourth to book a spot in the playoffs, where an additional two FIFA World Cup tickets will be at stake. On a positive note, they sit four points ahead of Kyrgyz Republic but with Iran and then Uzbekistan to follow, Qatar must tread with caution. Iran will head into the tie in relaxed mode after securing a fourth consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup. In what has been a sterling qualifying campaign, the only points Team Melli dropped were in two stalemates with Uzbekistan and they aren't likely to hold back despite having already secured their FIFA World Cup slot. The corresponding fixture last November ended 5-0 in Iran's favour and they will be aiming for another statement win. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia both know the score - only victory will suffice when they meet in Group C of the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 on Thursday. Bahrain are chasing a playoff spot while Saudi Arabia need the three points to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive going into next Tuesday's final round of matches. Defeats against Indonesia and Japan in the March fixtures ended Bahrain's hopes of an automatic spot, with the West Asian side going into their tie against Saudi Arabia on six points. They sit three point behind Indonesia, with the third and fourth-place teams to advance to the playoffs which offer an additional two spots to the global showpiece. While their fate is no longer in their hands, Bahrain will be determined to remain in the race for as long as they can as they look to make up for their March defeats. With Japan having already confirmed their spot in next year's Finals, Saudi Arabia are in a two-horse race with Australia - with the Socceroos in prime position to advance automatically. That, however, could change if Australia fail to beat Japan on Thursday as a win for Saudi Arabia against Bahrain will mean the two will face off in a winner-takes-all showdown on Tuesday. Oman will aim to maximise home ground advantage when they welcome Jordan to the Sultan Qaboos Sport Complex for their AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 Group B tie on Thursday.
