Irvine Welsh documentary was a fitting end to close the EIF

Irvine Welsh is full of stories, one reason he is such a prolific author. He isn't short of anecdotes, either, or of opinions. These range from politics to what he mockingly refers to as his 'practice', in other words his approach to fiction writing. But he also has the raconteur's gift of delivery and – whisper it – a whiff of the public intellectual to him. God knows we need that breed these days. Throw in his oeuvre (another term he probably hates) and his authorship of the most iconic Scottish novel of the last 30 years, and you can see why he is such a rich subject for a documentary.
Unsurprisingly there have been a few to date. But Edinburgh-based film-maker Paul Sng's is undoubtedly the best, making it a welcome and fitting work to bring down the curtain on this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival. Artful, considered, imaginative, rewarding, though-provoking and pleasingly high concept, it avoids dwelling too much on past glories to foreground its subject in the present.

We open, though, with a sort of career précis. It comes courtesy of clips from an onstage interview conducted at a Toronto literary festival by Welsh's fellow Edinburgh-er Michael Pedersen, fast approaching national treasure status himself. Still in Canada, we then see Welsh visit the offices of a couple of lifestyle/therapy gurus in order to take hallucinogenic drug Dimethyltryptamine.
Known as DMT – or, sometimes, the businessman's drug, because the trip it induces can be had in a lunch-break – it offers Welsh a break from the reality which he says is 'not enough' for a writer and from which Sng takes his intriguing title. Having brusquely headed off some therapy-speak 'bullshit' from the shaven-headed wellness dudes – just give me the drug is Welsh's simple request – he takes to a mattress to enjoy the experience.
We return to him there throughout, Sng using this as a framing device and as a slipway to launch the free-wheeling sequences in which Welsh, dressed in white suit and t-shirt, wanders through an abandoned factory as images and colours are projected onto him and the walls. These sequences are trippy and psychedelic, and have the effect of making it look as if he is in some liminal space, or is being invited to amble through a dream version of his own life. Much of the projections show old footage of Edinburgh, causing the author to reflect on his early life, the death of his parents, his use of drugs, his reasons for first picking up a pen. 'I wouldn't have been a writer if it hadn't been for Acid House,' he says at one point.
Sng also drops in excerpts from Welsh's novels, accompanied by even trippier visuals. The obliging readers include Liam Neeson (a passage from The Acid House), Stephen Graham (Glue), Maxine Peake (Porno), Ruth Negga (Dead Men's Trousers) and, last, an unspecified voice with a very slight Australian lilt. Could it be? It is: Nick Cave, reading from The Blade Artist.
Too much of this would be, well, too much, so interspersed with the curated readings and the jazzy visuals are more prosaic sections. We see Welsh and his wife Emma at Traquair House in the Borders following a book festival event. We watch him play football with childhood friends in Muirhouse, at the ground of Lowland League football club Civil Service Strollers, then chatting easily with them in the bar afterwards. We see him in LA with his manager, at his house in Miami, and at the boxing club he frequents there.
Sng controls and presents his material well, though it's Welsh's own observations, thoughts and opinions which really drive the film. Some are just wryly humorous. 'Married to me? I think it would be a hard shift,' he says, the only time he answers an off-screen question. Others are more reflective. 'Writing ... is essentially a square go with yourself,' he says. Then, later: 'You steal from your own life. You're constantly putting fangs in your own fucking neck.' And: 'The most important resource you have is time. I basically retired 30 years ago, I've just been indulging myself since.'
But it's one of his post-trip comments which lingers most in the mind. 'I'm no longer an atheist,' he says. 'It makes dying a more exciting thing than a thing to dread.'
No sign of that yet, though – it's very much a life and an appetite for life which Paul Sng's commendable documentary celebrates and explores.

Sioned, 33, from Llansannan, North Wales, has transitioned from performing to teaching and is now using her passion for the arts to inspire students as a drama teacher and Head of Drama in a Welsh-language school. She completed her PGCE in Education with The Open University in Wales in 2019, following an undergraduate degree in musical theatre from the University of Central Lancashire. Sioned said: "I enjoyed my work as a performer but I needed a change. "I wanted a role that would allow me to remain in the industry but would give me flexibility to plan for the future. "The Open University's two-year PGCE programme was life-changing because I could work towards my qualification at my own pace, and I didn't have to give up a job that I had grown to love." After five years as a travelling performer, Sioned took on a maternity cover role in education, which sparked her interest in teaching. The flexibility of the OU's part-time PGCE allowed her to study while working and starting a family. Since qualifying, she has taken on the role of Head of Drama, leading creative projects and running extracurricular classes to help students grow in confidence and develop their talents. "Some of my students have even gone on to be professional performers. "Helping learners develop their Welsh abilities has been just as rewarding. "Seeing them express themselves in their first language on stage and in everyday conversations fills me with great pride." Her journey highlights a wider issue in Wales, where secondary schools face a growing shortage of qualified teachers. The number of new secondary teacher trainees has dropped by 50 per cent over the past decade, with just 369 qualifying in 2024, far below the Welsh Government's target of 1,000. Subjects such as science, maths, and Welsh are particularly affected, especially in rural and low-income areas. The shortage threatens not only education but also the Welsh Government's goal of reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050. Michelle Matheron, assistant director of external affairs at The Open University in Wales, said: "Accessible and flexible learning is essential to address the challenges facing the education sector. "We're dedicated to empowering educators to progress in their careers, while continuing to make a difference in communities and schools across Wales. "As schools across Wales face increasing pressure to recruit and retain qualified staff, alternative routes into teaching are more important than ever. "By working in partnership with schools and education leaders across Wales, we're working to build a stronger and more skilled workforce to ensure that a quality education is available for all students regardless of background or location." Nearly 200 former Open University students are now teaching in schools across Wales, thanks to its part-time and salaried PGCE routes. The Open University in Wales also offers professional qualifications in nursing, social work, teaching, and other essential public services. These programmes are developed in partnership with employers to ensure students gain practical experience alongside their studies.

Revealed: The secret formula for making us laugh today

T he Edinburgh Fringe cracks its last gag of the year this weekend. As usual, I've spent the month in churches, gyms, packing crates and even purpose-built theatres looking for the best in Fringe comedy. But what have I learnt from the 80-odd shows I've seen? Apart, that is, from a few practical notes? Don't sigh too loudly when a fellow audience member brings out a camera phone (most shows). Don't make eye contact with a comedian looking for a volunteer (many shows). Don't go to see naked clowns who urinate in a bucket live on stage (only one show: Rosa Garland's much-acclaimed — but not by me — Primal Bog). Beyond that, here are this year's lessons from Fringe comedy. It would almost be quicker to list the comedians who weren't talking about their health woes than the ones who were. At a Fringe where identity politics and party politics took a back seat, everyone could unite behind the one thing we all really, really, really have in common: bodies. John Tothill, a comedian who has truly found his voice this year, talked about the 'obliterated' appendix that came close to killing him last year. And yet, in a gloriously garrulous, magpie-minded hour, it was only in the last third that he finally got to talking about his body shutting itself down, before showing us his unmetaphorical scars. He wants to celebrate life more than fear death. John Tothill talked about the 'obliterated' appendix that came close to killing him last year Cat Cohen — my vote for 'comedian whose show absolutely should have been nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award yet wasn't' — turned her stroke at 31 and subsequent heart operation into an hour of characteristically glam cabaret. Alison Spittle was one of several comedians talking about Mounjaro or Ozempic, after being told to lose weight for health reasons. Body positivity has its limits. The newcomer Molly McGuinness regaled us with her health horrors — nine days in a coma — but kept a droll distance from wallowing. 'Nearly dying,' she said, 'is the laziest way of being called brave.' • The best jokes of Edinburgh Fringe 2025 It's not that comedians aren't political, but there are few who want to be topical in their humour. There is so much semi-comical opining on such matters in podcasts, panel shows, newspapers and on the radio that comedians prefer to do something that is unique to them — and doesn't need rewiring every day. A notable exception was Matt Forde, but his act was nonetheless at its best when he spliced his adroit analysis and impressions with reflections on his attitudes to mortality — after a cancer condition he has been told has a 60 per cent likelihood of returning within six to ten years. Elsewhere the proudly leftist Josie Long wishing harm to centrist Starmer stood out for its pique and its rarity value, while from the more than 80 shows I saw there were a few murmurings of support for Palestine without anyone going into the weeds on the issue. 'It's absolutely crucial we talk of such matters,' Ivo Graham said of Palestine in his show, but then didn't. Hard to make geopolitical catastrophe amusing, after all. Which is maybe why comedians stick with what they know best: personal catastrophe. Alison Spittle was one of several comedians talking about Mounjaro or Ozempic KARLA GOWLETT What about the surge of mental health shows over the past few years? Are comedians still detailing their ADHD diagnoses and autism journeys? Spittle's show has a sharp line that explains why the game has moved on. 'Four years ago the richest comedians got privately diagnosed, then we watched their sets and went, 'Look, it's me!'' So mental health tales are still here, but only when they are truly sanity-testing or life-threatening. The New York comedian Rachel Kaly spent a whole hour detailing a lifetime of woes, including suicidal thoughts and borderline personality disorder while managing to be winningly dogged about finding the absurdity in it all. Joe Tracini, the son of the veteran comedian Joe Pasquale, did something similar (if frothier in the treatment). • Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025: the best comedy shows to see Dan Tiernan made us feel mental disintegration as if it were our own in one tremendous set piece capped by a perfect punchline. And finally, muscling in on the Adam Kay market, the psychiatrist Dr Benji Waterhouse turned his book You Don't Have to Be Mad to Work Here into an interesting (if not outright funny) hour, Maddening. Rachel Kaly spent a whole hour detailing a lifetime of woes You could argue that the comedian is today's secular priest, offering sermons on the pressing issues of today. Just with more references to their sex lives and ambulance rides. What is a growing phenomenon, though, is the comedian meeting you outside the door as you file out, just like a priest checking in with their congregation. It's hard to go to your friend, 'Well, that was a waste of time,' when the timewaster in question is standing there handing out badges, thanking you for coming or — in venues that are free or pay-what-you-can — holding a card reader or a bucket for donations. The worst example of this I've had was when a performer stood in the aisle as everyone was leaving and looked them in the eye as she asked: 'Did you enjoy it?' • Read more comedy reviews, guides and interviews Did I see a perfect show all month? Probably not. Perfection isn't the point, even if some shows are more polished than others. Trying to say new things is what makes Fringe comedy so exciting and variable. While I really enjoyed Alan Davies's return to stand-up after a decade, I would bet big money that his tale of fatherhood and the childhood sexual abuse from his father that he has never talked about before on stage will take full flight once he's been on tour for a few weeks. The flat-out funniest show I saw all month? Tim Key's Loganberry, which he's been doing work-in-progress versions of for months. It's a slow process, even for the greats. Molly McGuinness regaled us with her health horrors The case against the Fringe is well rehearsed: primarily that it's so wildly expensive. Luke McQueen pointed out in his fine show, Comedian's Comedian, that even if he sold every ticket he would still lose money. And yet. The Fringe is part arts festival, part trade fair, and where else could you see genuinely exciting newcomers such as Ayoade Bamgboye, Rory Marshall, Toussaint Douglass, Elouise Eftos, Max Fulham and the sketch act Simple Town in a day? Kate Humble to open Craft Festival Wales next month

The national showcase will run from September 5 to 7 and will feature some of the UK's finest makers, including several from Carmarthenshire. Among those selected to exhibit are Llandovery's Emily James of Carpenter and Cloth, ceramicist Justine Allison from Newcastle Emlyn, Tim Lane Ceramics of Llandovery, and Llandeilo-based ceramic artist Kate Glanville. Ms Glanville said: "I'm thrilled to be part of this wonderful weekend of creativity in Cardigan. "It was amazing to see so many talented makers at the event last year – the atmosphere was terrific." She will demonstrate her craft throughout the three-day festival, showcasing her distinctive hand-decorated tiles, plates, mugs, and bowls. Mike Watt, of Llanwrda-based Rural Kind, who designs and makes waxed canvas bags and leather goods using British materials, will also take part. Mr Watt said: "It's great to be part of something that elevates and celebrates crafts in Wales." Craft Festival Wales is an annual fixture in West Wales thanks to support from Event Wales, part of the Welsh Government, the Arts Council of Wales, the Ceredigion County Council Shared Prosperity Fund, and local business partners. The festival extends beyond the castle grounds into Cardigan itself, with a craft trail featuring six venues across the town. These will showcase original commissioned pieces from Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthen. Visitors can look forward to a full programme of craft workshops for adults, which can be booked online in advance. There will also be talks under the Capital of Craft banner, delivered by makers, authors, and broadcasters. Other highlights include a sculpture trail through the castle gardens, live music, and food and drink from local producers. A free children's craft tent will also return, offering a packed schedule of activities. The event will be opened by Monmouthshire author and broadcaster Kate Humble at 10am on September 5. She will discuss her new book, Homemade: Recipes from the Countryside, and will be signing copies later in the day. Ms Humble will also take part in The Capital of Craft Live, which features talks, masterclasses, and panel discussions with leading makers and industry experts. Tickets are now on sale. Adult tickets cost £8, and children go free with a paying adult. A three-day weekend ticket is available for £15.
