Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life is all set to hit theaters in a few hours. The much-awaited gangster drama has wrapped up its advance bookings in Tamil Nadu with a reasonable Rs 8.25 crore in pre-sales. This points to an opening day gross of Rs 15-16 crore in the state, landing between Retro and Amaran's start. Amaran released on a holiday so the realistic opening of that movie would have been around Rs 11-12 crore.
While this points towards a decent kickoff, it falls short of the blockbuster expectations for this iconic collaboration. Here's a breakdown of Thug Life 's advance booking performance and what it means for its box office prospects.
In Tamil Nadu, Thug Life has clocked presales of Rs 8.25-8.50 crore. This is stronger than recent Tamil releases like Raayan and Thangalaan, but it trails behind Kamal Haasan's own Vikram. The film's performance in key areas like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Chengalpet is driving the numbers while the mass centers are not as good as expected.
Outside Tamil Nadu, the advance bookings are less impressive. Kerala's pre-sales are expected to close at Rs 60 lakh for the opening day. The Telugu states and North India are projected to add around Rs 1 crore combined, taking the all-India advance booking total to Rs 9.75-10 crore. This sets Thug Life up for a nationwide opening of Rs 19-20 crore gross, a respectable but slightly underwhelming start for a film of this scale.
The absence of a Karnataka release, due to a controversy over Kamal Haasan 's remarks on the Kannada language, is a major blow, costing an estimated Rs 2-3 crore in potential revenue for the opening day. Internationally, the film is faring better if we talk on a relative basis.
The good news for Thug Life is its financial safety net. The film has already recovered its costs (excluding Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's fees) through non-theatrical deals. This reduces the pressure on theatrical earnings. However, to be a hit, Thug Life needs to gross over Rs 250 crore worldwide.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life reunites him with Kamal Haasan after their 1987 classic Nayakan. JAMMU: J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha lavished praise on PM Narendra Modi Friday for making the 'Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari slogan' a reality and carrying forward what he said was 'a socio-economic revolution in J&K' since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Relief for parents as notebooks cost less after raw paper prices fall
Pune: Parents across Pune are breathing easier this school season after a noticeable drop in the prices of notebooks and school stationery. The academic year will begin in 10 days for most govt and private schools and the markets are bustling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The price reduction is largely due to a steep fall—around 40 to 50%—in the cost of raw paper imported from abroad. This led to a 15 to 20% drop in the prices of notebooks, registers, and other paper-based school materials. Retailers confirmed that notebooks which cost ₹400–₹450 per dozen last year are now available for ₹300. A4-size notebooks, earlier priced at ₹600 per dozen, are now being sold at ₹450–₹480. Drawing books, which were ₹42, are now ₹32 per book. However, prices for felt pens and whiteners remained unchanged. "Prices have come down by at least 10-15%," Rajiv Chandak of Trimurti Traders said. "Medium-quality A4 notebooks that sold for ₹540 are now ₹450. We've revised our cash memos to reflect the new rates." Sachin Gaikwad of ABC Stationers added, "Last year, A4 notebooks were priced between ₹700 and ₹800 depending on the brand. This year, they are available for as low as ₹300. It's a 5–8% dip across various formats." Nikhil Shah of Bombay Book Manufacturing Company said, "Paper rates have stabilised. Last year, during the peak season, prices shot up. This year, the same A4 notebook from a top brand like Classmate, which cost Rs 75, is available for Rs 65." Kothrud resident Suhas Kulkarni said, "We have two school-going children, so every rupee matters. Compared to the last year, our stationery bill is down by nearly 20%. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It's a big relief. We could buy everything—bags, notebooks, lunch boxes—within our budget." Kondhwa resident Vaishali Kedari said, "Usually, we spend a lot on notebooks and registers. But this year, the prices are really reasonable. With school reopening just a week away, shopkeepers expect more crowds during this weekend and over the next week. For now, the price correction is happy news.
