27 parking corridors planned in 26km to ease traffic congestions

1 2 3 Nagpur: City's busiest commercial stretches — from Mahal and Itwari to Sitabuldi and Dharampeth — are routinely clogged, not just by heavy traffic but by haphazardly parked vehicles that leave little room for smooth movement. With traffic cops often absent from these high-congestion pockets, the situation escalates during peak shopping hours, creating bottlenecks that spill over into adjoining streets. The comprehensive mobility plan (CMP), prepared by MahaMetro in collaboration with RITES, proposes a structured solution: Designated on-street parking corridors across 27 stretches of the city with over 25.57 km. These include commercial hubs such as Mate Chowk to Pratap Nagar Chowk (850metres), Pratap Nagar Chowk to Mangalmurti Chowk (2.46km), Ravi Nagar Square to Ram Nagar Rotary (820m), Katol Road Sub-Post Office to Chhaoni T-Point (1.03km), and Jagnade Square to Itwari Telephone Exchange Chowk (1.16km). The concept is simple — demarcated lanes for parking, monitored for turnover, will prevent vehicles from spilling into moving lanes. Officials involved in the planning said that if parking is streamlined, an additional lane could be freed in many market stretches without widening roads. The CMP also proposes automatic multilevel parking facilities at four locations with a total capacity of 1,700 equivalent car spaces (ECS). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Phase-1 projects include Gokulpeth Market (600 ECS), near Ganeshpeth Bus Terminal (350 ECS), and near Mor Bhavan Bus Terminal (350 ECS). Phase-2 will see another facility at Patwardhan Ground (400 ECS), all worth Rs 56 crore. In parallel, the plan identifies 'no-parking zones' covering 4km of road length. These include West High Court Road near Gokulpeth Market (1.21km), Panchsheel Chowk to NMC Zone IV Chowk (655m), and Variety Chowk to Jhansi Rani Chowk (263m), among others. Authorities believe that such restrictions, combined with multilevel options nearby, will help reduce illegal parking in choke points. In dense shopping areas, shoppers often park on narrow roads, blocking part of the carriageway. With few traffic personnel around, vehicles are left unattended for long durations, aggravating congestion. The CMP suggests that dedicated, metered on-street parking integrated with electronic ticketing and fines can bring transparency, improve enforcement, and encourage quicker vehicle turnover. Urban transport experts caution that the proposal's success will depend on enforcement. Without active monitoring, even marked parking zones can turn into extended storage for vehicles, they said, stressing the need for digital monitoring systems. Barasat metro to cross airport hurdle with tunnel-borer help

Kolkata: The Airport-Barasat metro corridor or the Yellow Line, which faced multiple hurdles beyond the airport, is poised for a major head start as Metro Railway is changing the alignment and deciding to use tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) between Michael Nagar and Barasat. This will enable it to not only avoid use of tall cranes that the airport authorities had objected to citing flight safety, it will also help the line negotiate the tricky stretch between New Barrackpore and Barasat where encroachment is a major challenge. Earlier, the tunnel section between the airport and New Barrackpore was supposed to be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, while the rest was supposed to be elevated. If the proposal gets the railways ministry's nod, the length of the Noapara-Basarat corridor will double from 18 km to 22 km and feature three additional stations beyond Barasat. Metro Railway has engaged railway consultancy firm RITES for a feasibility study on the Airport-Barasat section's alignment revision so that the twin tunnels can be executed by deploying non-invasive TBMs. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata The development comes a week before PM Narendra Modi's likely inauguration of the first phase of the Yellow Line from Noapara to the airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Al-meranah Eastern: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo When that happens, the city will get its first airport metro connectivity. However, beyond the airport, the Yellow Line construction has been a major challenge as Metro Railway opted for the cut-and-cover technique to build the twin tunnels. In the absence of TBMs, the construction would involve excavating a trench to build the tunnel structure and then filling it. "The technique is useful when the depth is relatively shallow and surface disruption is permissible," said a source. "All the above issues plaguing the Yellow Line are ready to be resolved. RITES has started the feasibility study for a longer Yellow Line with eight more stations. Once the proposal gets the final approval from the ministry, the 18km Noapara-Barasat corridor will span 22 km, with nine stations in the 12km Michael Nagar-Barasat section alone," the source said. Barasat Municipality chairman Ashani Mukherjee said: "Topographical survey and geo-technical investigations are ongoing in the Madhyamgram and Barasat municipal areas for further extension of the Yellow Line and revision of construction methodology in the Michael Nagar-Barasat section. At the behest of CM Mamata Banerjee, Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar broached the issue in Lok Sabha. Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel. " According to the new alignment, the 11.9km Michael Nagar-Barasat underground route will run parallel to Jessore Road below some low-rise buildings, Vidyasagar Stadium, Kachhari Maidan, Barasat DM's office, and the Barasat EMU car shed-cum-maintenance depot at Jaypur. The stations will include Michael Nagar, Bidhanpally, Madhyamgram, Hridaypur, Vidyasagar Stadium, Barasat, Uttar Seethi, Jaypur, and Suripukur. Festive season bus ban aligns with Rs80 crore mobility plan for new outer terminals

1 2 Nagpur: Private inter-city buses from Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and neighbouring states will stay off Nagpur's main roads, with the traffic department banning pick-ups and drops in the middle of busy stretches during the festive season. The order, aimed at easing congestion and improving safety, comes as the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) pushes for a permanent restructuring of how intercity buses operate for Rs 80 crore in two phases. Traffic experts said the temporary measure is part of a broader strategy that may eventually see intercity operations shifted entirely to the outskirts. The idea is already embedded in the CMP prepared by MahaMetro in collaboration with RITES, now in its final public feedback stage. The Bus Terminal Improvement Plan under CMP proposes redeveloping Ganeshpeth and Mor Bhavan for intracity use only, while creating four new intercity hubs outside the city's dense core. Phase 1 will see the construction of Parsodi terminal on Hingna Road and Khairi terminal on Nagpur–Jabalpur Road, each with an estimated cost of Rs20 crore, taking the total Phase 1 investment to Rs40 crore. Phase 2 will add terminals at Wadi on Amravati Road and Kapsi on Nagpur–Kolkata Highway, worth Rs 40 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Ears Ring, Stop Sleeping Like This Immediately Derila Ergo Undo These sites have been chosen to intercept buses before they enter the city, easing the load on central roads. Currently, hundreds of private intercity buses arrive in Nagpur daily, many from other states, with unregulated stops that spill passengers directly into moving traffic. "These proposed bus terminals will also serve as a depot for private buses. The exact locations and land acquisition following that will be finalised once the suggestion window is closed and the plan is locked," said a senior MahaMetro official. While the ban is temporary, the CMP envisions a long-term transition where passengers board and alight only at dedicated outer terminals before switching to Metro, city buses, or autos for last-mile travel. The integration is expected to reduce congestion, cut travel time within the city, and improve safety for both passengers and other road users. Implementation will be led by MahaMetro in coordination with civic and traffic agencies. For now, officials say the focus is on ensuring smooth travel during the festive season — but the larger shift could follow in the years ahead if the CMP's proposals move into execution.
