Cedar Park-based Firefly Aerospace awarded Department of Defense contract
Cedar Park-based Firefly Aerospace announced Monday that it has been awarded a contract with the U.S. Defense Department to perform a responsive on-orbit mission using its spacecraft.
The mission is part of the Defense Innovation Unit, or DIU, Sinequone Project, a Defense Department initiative aimed at prototyping the use of commercial launch and orbital transfer systems to provide cost-effective, responsive access beyond geosynchronous orbits. These orbits, commonly referred to as xGEO, extend beyond Earth-centered orbits that have an orbital period matching Earth's rotation.
For the mission, Firefly's Elytra spacecraft will serve as a space maneuver vehicle, performing a series of tasks and hosting a suite of government payloads. The mission is set to launch as early as 2027.
'Firefly has proven our ability to rapidly and reliably launch, land and operate in space as we continue to execute bold missions from (low Earth orbit) to lunar orbit and beyond,' said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace. 'This national security mission will further demonstrate our ability to perform responsive on-orbit tasks when and where our customers need them with our highly maneuverable Elytra orbital vehicle."
Firefly's multimission orbital vehicle Elytra's main engine, known as Spectre, was recently proven when Firefly became the first commercial company to complete a fully successful moon landing in early March.

Firefly successfully landed its Blue Ghost Mission 1 lunar lander on the moon's surface on March 2, and it then operated 10 NASA-backed scientific and technological instruments over the period of one lunar day, equivalent to about 14 days on Earth.
According to Kim, Elytra will be equipped with the same systems used in the Blue Ghost landing — including the reaction control system thrusters that successfully performed Blue Ghost's final descent to the moon — for the Sinequone mission.
Along with its successful moon landing last month, Firefly was recently awarded an $8.2 million grant from the Texas Space Commission for spacecraft clean room space, test facilities and infrastructure support. According to Firefly, the Texas Space Commission gift is aiding Firefly's ability to mass produce Elytra in higher quantities at a lower cost.

Japanese Aerospace Firm Poised to Land Spacecraft on the Moon
Update: Sadly, the spacecraft crashed into the Moon on Friday, June 6. Our original story follows below. A Japanese aerospace firm called Ispace is set to put a spacecraft on the Moon this week. Resilience, the star of Ispace's HAKUTO-R Mission 2, has spent nearly six months circumnavigating Earth and the Moon in preparation for its final descent. If all goes well, the spacecraft will touch down on the lunar surface Thursday afternoon. Resilience was a travel companion to Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander, which successfully touched down on a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille on March 2. Together, the landers launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Jan. 15. But while Blue Ghost took just a month and a half to reach its target, Ispace wanted Resilience to stop and smell the roses along the way. The lander completed a lunar flyby before leveraging the Moon's gravity to initiate a slow, fuel-efficient path toward lunar orbit, which it entered on May 6. Now Ispace mission control is triple-checking that its lander is prepared for its final descent. On May 28, Resilience completed a lunar orbital control maneuver that perfected its trajectory, according to the company on Wednesday morning. The adjustment shortened Resilience's projected landing time by seven minutes, placing touchdown at 3:17 p.m. EST on Thursday, June 5. Credit: NASA Resilience will land near the center of Mare Frigoris, which translates to "Sea of Cold." While the surface of the Moon can top 120 degrees Celsius (250 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day, this 1,500-kilometer lunar sea lies in the Moon's far north, which receives less solar radiation and stays relatively cool. Mare Frigoris's flat terrain and proximity to the north pole make it an ideal landing spot, especially because Ispace will need to maintain line-of-sight radio communication as Resilience deploys its many payloads. Among the payloads are a food production experiment from the Japanese biofuel firm Euglena Co., a deep space radiation probe from Taiwan's National Central University, and Ispace's own Tenacious micro rover, which will independently explore the landing site. Resilience will also place Moonhouse, a sculpture by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg, on the lunar surface.

New Gold Star on Hamilton's west side is open and has an expanded menu
Jun. 6—A relocated Hamilton west side Gold Star restaurant is now open and is much larger than its former location on Main Street. It is in a plaza on North Brookwood Avenue that will see explosive growth in the next few years. A Valvoline is being built nearby, next to Wendy's and a newly announce Kroger Marketplace will be close, too. The Gold Star is corporate-owned as it replaces a building owned by now-former franchisee Carlo Salem, who is retiring. Gold Star Chili CEO Roger David said the work to select a location and build it took at least five years. However, it's been his priority for just about his entire 10-year tenure as CEO. Plans for the project were approved by Hamilton City Council in 2023. "It's very, very rewarding to be here," he said. David said patrons will notice a few things walking through the door, one being "an elevated level of hospitality." Another is an expanded menu, which in addition to the classic conies and ways, the restaurant will serve single and double burgers, deckers, fried chicken sandwiches, milkshakes and garlic parmesan fries, which David says "are the best in the city." The westside Hamilton store is a little bigger than the newer prototype restaurants being built over the past few years. The new Gold Star store replaced an old Pizza Hut, but David said they used that pizza restaurant's existing footprint, which resulted in a bigger space. "It has a tremendous dining room in there, we can accommodate a large group," he said. Gold Star plans to continue its partnership with community groups, including the schools, churches "and any organization that congregates." "We'll be a part of whatever their needs may be," he said. But helping with food banks and pantries is where the 60-year-old restaurant chain "really, really leans in heavily." "Understanding community needs is kind of where it starts, but with hunger, that's typically where we lean in a little heavier," he said. While the North Brookwood Gold Star has been open for a couple of weeks, the Cincinnati-based chain will formally celebrate its opening the weekend of Aug. 9 and 10, where guests can get free cheese coneys with the purchase of a drink, and chances to win free burgers for a year. The restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 108 N. Brookwood Ave.

Buc-ee's opens store an hour from New Orleans
Buc-ee's opens its massive travel center Monday in Mississippi just off Interstate 10 in Pass Christian. Why it matters: It's the popular chain's closest location to New Orleans (it's about one hour away) as it works on building its first two stores in Louisiana. The big picture: Buc-ee's is a cult favorite for road trippers. It's known for clean bathrooms, fresh food and beaver-themed merchandise. The Mississippi location has all the classics, the company says, including Texas barbeque, jerky, fudge, kolaches, pastries and snacks. It also has 120 gas pumps and 24 EV charging stations, according to a press release. The store opens at 6am and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. By the numbers: It's the company's first store in Mississippi and has one of its largest footprints at 74,000 square feet. Its largest store, which it claims is the world's largest convenience station, is in Luling, Texas, at 75,593 square feet. Until now, the closest one to New Orleans was in Alabama near Mobile. Zoom out: Buc-ee's is a Texas-based chain that has been expanding its footprint nationally. Its first Louisiana store is expected to open in Ruston late next year, a company spokesperson tells Axios. A Lafayette store is projected to open in 2027, the spokesperson says. If you go: Expect crowds and traffic on I-10 near the new store. The Pass Christian location is at 8245 Firetower Road, which is accessed via exit 24 (Menge Avenue) on I-10.
