Kamaru Usman gets back on track with UFC Fight Night win
Kamaru Usman returned to the win column Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Atlanta, Ga., securing a unanimous decision over Joaquin Buckley 49-46, 49-46, 48-47.
'Those knockouts will come,' Usman said after the win. 'I just needed to get that monkey off my back.'
The first two rounds of the headline welterweight attraction saw Usman (21-4 MMA) pitch the equivalent of a shutout, effortlessly taking Buckley (21-7 MMA) down and utilizing his ground-and-pound to out-strike the St. Louis native 16-0 in the significant strikes category.
Round 3 started strong for Buckley as he found his striking range before Usman found his third takedown in four tries.
The former champion kept Buckley there for the final two minutes, briefly securing the mount position as the seconds ticked down.
Round 4 was primarily on the feet, as Buckley found his best combinations of the fight but couldn't find a comeback finish.
Usman took Buckley down again, securing the back mount position as the round ended.
Round 5 saw both men trade blows, but it was too little, too late for Buckley, who had a six-fight unbeaten streak snapped. It was Usman's first win since he held the title in Nov. 2021.
Buckley was gracious in defeat, suffering his first loss at welterweight.

'We're just getting started, baby,' Buckley said. 'We'll be back.'
The co-main event also needed the cards, as former two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas earned a highly competitive unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 over Miranda Maverick.
Namajunas (15-7 MMA) overcame adversity, nearly getting submitted by arm-triangle in Round 2.
Namajunas has won three of her last four. She still seeks a belt in a second division, this time at flyweight. Maverick (17-6 MMA) had a four-fight winning streak snapped, dating to July 2023.

A recurring theme continued: middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan nearly finished TUF alumnus Andre Petroski with a would-be third-round TKO before walking away with a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.
The win marked Shahbazyan's first stretch of back-to-back wins since 2019, his first decision win since 2018.
Shahbazyan (15-5 MMA) had little trouble controlling the Pennsylvania native in Petroski (13-5 MMA) in all aspects, who has lost two of his last three fights.
Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt fell short against Raoni Barcelos in a lackluster affair by unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28. Barcelos (20-5 MMA) has won three in a row, as Garbrandt (14-7 MMA), who won the title in December 2016, has won just three of his last 20 appearances.

Barcelos nearly secured a late third-round rear-naked choke, but Garbrandt was able to fend it off before landing a few strikes to close the fight.
In middleweight action, Mansur Abdul-Malik earned a technical decision over Cody Brundage 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.
Abdul-Malik nearly had a third-round TKO 36 seconds in, but an accidental clash of heads changed the direction of the fight, thus needing the judges to intervene.
Abdul-Malik (9-0 MMA) moved to 3-0 in the promotion, whereas Brundage (11-7 MMA) dropped below .500 in the UFC and still seeks his first string of back-to-back wins in nearly three years.
The UFC Atlanta main card began with Alonzo Menifield earning a unanimous decision over Oumar Sy in a light heavyweight bout, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.
Menifield (17-5-1 MMA) handed Sy (11-1 MMA) his first MMA loss, which snapped a two-fight UFC stint since making his debut last May. Menifield, meanwhile, has won two straight.
The UFC's schedule goes international with a Fight Night installment a week from Saturday in Azerbaijan, headlined by a light heavyweight non-championship five-rounder between former champion Jamahal Hill (12-3 MMA) and ex-title challenger Khalil Rountree Jr. (14-6 MMA).

Usman Has A ‘Simple Path' To DDP
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight king Kamaru Usman finally returns to action after a lengthy layoff against surging contender Joaquin Buckley at UFC Atlanta this weekend (Sat., June 14, 2025) inside State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. 'The Nigerian Nightmare' is all about the idea of big 'blockbuster' fights these days. Advertisement Recently, he revealed that he sees a potential fight with Islam Makhachev, who is now moving up to the Welterweight division, as a massive superfight and something he's looking forward to. But at UFC Atlanta's media day, the 38-year-old unveiled a bolder vision: a second title and a historic Africa showdown with Middleweight champ Dricus Du Plessis. And the route to get there is easy in his eyes. 'My path there is pretty simple,' Usman told reporters. 'I'll just lay out the map here. I'll finish Buckley this weekend and then wait for the winner of, I believe, Islam and JDM, which is going to be an incredible fight. It's such a great thing now having Islam come up into the division. Who wouldn't buy a ticket to that? Former pound-for-pound and current pound-for-pound. I love Islam. Islam is a great fighter. I think that's something that we'd both remember forever.' Advertisement 'Win [against Islam] and then go ahead and probably vacate, go up,' Usman continued. 'Myself vs. Dricus Du Plessis, if he is the champion, or Khamzat Chimaev, too, if Dricus is no longer the champion, we do that. If Dricus is the champion, we do that in the first card in Africa. That's another blockbuster. These are back-to-back blockbuster fights you tell your grandkids about. Who wouldn't watch those?' Usman's blockbuster blueprint is electrifying, but a ferocious Buckley stands in his way this Saturday. With knockout power and a hunger to topple a legend, Buckley aims to shatter 'The Nigerian Nightmare's' comeback. Dream big. Kamaru Usman no-sells Belal Muhammad callout after UFC on ESPN 59, wants next title shot
Kamaru Usman no-sells Belal Muhammad callout after UFC on ESPN 59, wants next title shot Show Caption Hide Caption UFC on ESPN 69: Kamaru Usman post-fight interview UFC on ESPN 69 winner Kamaru Usman talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after his decision victory over Joaquin Buckley in Atlanta. ATLANTA – Kamaru Usman did not remember the name Belal Muhammad, or at least he pretended. Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) turned back the clock in a dominant display against Joaquin Buckley in the UFC on ESPN 69 main event at State Farm Arena. It was the first win for the former welterweight champion since November 2021. After looking like the unstoppable force on the ground for most of the fight against Buckley (21-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC), he drew the attention of another former titleholder, Belal Muhammad. "See you soon," Muhammad wrote on X after the fight. In his first attempt at defending, Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) dropped the welterweight title to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315, ending a 10-fight unbeaten run. The former champ called his shot for Usman, but it was a name and a shout that "The Nigerian Nightmare" completely dismissed. "Who is it?" Usman responded when asked at a post-fight news conference about Muhammad's callout. "Who is that? Next." Usman has his sights set on the winner of a potential title fight between Della Maddalena and former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. It's a fight that has not been officially announced, but one that has been rumored to be the direction the promotion intends to go after Makhachev vacated the 155-pound title. "Let's be honest, I'm the biggest in the division," Usman said. "This is about entertainment. The UFC is an entertainment company. You want to make the biggest fight. It's going to be the winner of JDM and Islam. If Islam pulls that one out, former pound-for-pound, current pound-for-pound – who doesn't pay for that?" Usman, 38, admits that he's in the twilight of his career, but he still has some gas left in the tank for one more title push. After ending a three-fight skid, which included a pair of title losses to Leon Edwards, and a narrow short-notice loss to Khamzat Chimaev at middleweight, Usman struggled to hold back the emotions of a big win. However, he is confident that the next time he steps in the cage, he should be fighting for gold, whether it be against Della Maddalena or Makhachev. "JDM's no slouch," Usman said. "I've said that in his last fight, and he went out there and showed you guys, don't look past him. He's very, very talented. Islam is extremely talented. I love Islam. I think him coming in makes the division a lot more interesting. If he's able to get in there and wrestle that belt away from JDM, former pound-for-pound, current pound-for-pound, I mean, I think everyone wants to watch that."
