Samsung Display earns green certificate for its new office building
Samsung Display Research, the company's newly built headquarters in Giheung on the southern outskirts of Seoul, received the highest "platinum" grade in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, developed by the nonprofit US Green Building Council.
LEED evaluates the design, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, homes and neighborhoods in eco-friendly ways, aiming to help building operators and owners use green products and practices.
The new building was recognized for its high energy efficiency.
The company incorporated advanced energy management technologies from the initial design and construction stages, enabling real-time monitoring and optimization of energy use.
This system allows operators to analyze energy consumption, indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, and energy costs comprehensively.
The building also features its own solar power facility, helping secure additional points for the certification.
In addition to energy efficiency, the headquarters excelled in water utilization.
It includes rainwater and graywater reuse systems, along with low-maintenance landscaping in its outdoor park, minimizing water consumption.
The company also earned recognition for minimizing the environmental impact throughout the project, from site selection to the actual construction process.
"Our new office building was designed not only for the people who work at Samsung Display, but also for the local community and the future environment," said Lee Kun-hyung, head of global infra technology at Samsung Display. "It reflects our ambition to become a carbon-neutral landmark in the mid- to long-term." (Yonhap)

If a semiconductor firm commits to building its factory in the United States during President Donald Trump's term and fulfills the commitment, its chips would not face a tariff, the commerce secretary said Thursday, a day after Trump unveiled a plan to impose about a 100 percent tariff on chip imports. Secretary Howard Lutnick made the remarks during a Fox Business interview as South Korean tech firms, Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc., have been carefully watching his tariff policy developments. "So (what) the president said is if you commit to build in America during his term, and if you file it with the Commerce Department and if your auditor oversees you building it all the way through, then he will allow you to import your chips -- while you are building -- without a tariff," he said. "But you have to be confirmed and overseen building in America," he added. Trump's announcement on the new tariff came after he said Tuesday that his administration plans to announce sector-specific tariffs "within the next week or so." Some observers raised the possibility that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix could avoid the new tariff as they have been working on their investment plans in Texas and Indiana, respectively. To impose the tariff on semiconductor imports, Trump has invoked Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, a law that provides the president with the authority to adjust imports into the US when he determines they threaten to impair national security. S. Korea to be treated as favored nation for US chip tariffs under trade deal: minister
South Korea will be treated as a most favored nation by the United States in terms of semiconductor exports under a bilateral tariff agreement, the trade minister said Thursday, noting that Korean firms will not be subject to 100 percent duties as announced by US President Donald Trump. "If the US semiconductor tariff rate for MFNs is set at 15 percent, South Korea will also enjoy 15 percent tariffs regardless of the rate going up to 100 percent or 200 percent," Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said in a radio interview with broadcaster SBS. "In the trade deal, the US administration promised to grant us MFN status when imposing tariffs on the semiconductor and bio sectors in the future," Yeo added. Yeo's remarks came after Trump said his administration will impose a tariff of about 100 percent on semiconductor imports, which is expected to be officially announced in the coming weeks. Asked whether Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc., two major chip manufacturers in Korea, will not face 100 percent tariffs, Yeo answered, "Yes." Industry and trade experts here expect Washington's tariff rate for chip imports from MFNs to be set at 15 percent as the US agreed to apply 15 percent duties on European products in a trade agreement with the European Union last week. In a trade deal with Korea, the Trump administration did not specify how much tariff it will impose on Korean-made semiconductors, but agreed to grant Seoul the status of MFN in the sector. Under the deal, the US lowered its reciprocal tariffs for Korea to 15 percent from the initially proposed 25 percent and also reduced the tariff rate for Korean cars to 15 percent from 25 percent. In return, Seoul made a pledge to invest a combined US$350 billion in the US for cooperation in the shipbuilding, semiconductor, battery and other key industries, while promising to purchase $100 billion worth of American energy products. Earlier in the day, US tech giant Apple Inc. said it is working with Samsung at the latter's foundry plant in Texas to develop a next-generation semiconductor, which will be used for iPhone devices. Samsung Electronics wins W22.8tr order for chips
Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it has secured a 22.8 trillion-won ($16.4 billion) order to supply semiconductors to a major undisclosed customer. In a regulatory filing, the South Korean tech giant said it signed a foundry contract set to be completed by Dec. 31, 2033. The company did not disclose the identity of the client or the specifics of the deal, citing "management confidentiality."
