The Citizen12-05-2025

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted by-law enforcement operations in Tshwane recently.
According to TMPD, these compliance operations were carried out by regional members in Centurion, Mamelodi, Pretoria North, Koedoespoort, Garsfontein, The Orchards, Mapobane, and Hammanskraal.
'During these operations, businesses were inspected to ensure compliance with the metro's by-laws and regulations.'
They said these operations aim to remove all hazardous products from shelves to safeguard the health of the public.
The initiative resulted in the identification and confiscation of several hazardous items and expired food products across establishments.
'These operations were carried out regularly to combat lawlessness within our communities, particularly targeting those who sell hazardous and expired food products to the public.
'In Mapobane, several illegally erected structures were demolished.'
In addition, they said two people were arrested for being in the country unlawfully, in contravention of the Immigration Act.
TMPD further said in another incident on May 6, its members conducted a road safety operation in Centurion.
Almost 90 Aarto infringement notices were issued to motorists in violation of the road traffic regulations, amounting to fines of R44 250.
The TMPD said they remain committed to upholding the law and creating a safe and compliant environment for all residents.

Suspect linked to multiple crimes arrested at east mall after chase

Suspect linked to multiple crimes arrested at east mall after chase A motorist linked to a string of card scams and robberies in Pretoria and the West Rand was apprehended at a mall in Equestria following a chase. The driver was nabbed, however, his two accomplices managed to escape on foot at The Grove Shopping Mall. According to Sergeant Alfred Legodi of the Tshwane Flying Squad, the suspects in a grey Mercedes-Benz A200 Hatchback were identified driving without licence plates. The vehicle had been linked to previous crimes, including a shooting incident near Groenkloof Plaza. He said law enforcement tracked the car using location data. It was spotted on the N1 northbound near Olifantsfontein Road. Legodi explained that the suspects allegedly generated significant income through daily illegal activities before their arrest. It is reported that the vehicle was later located at Hazeldean Shopping Centre, where suspects had just scammed a male victim and robbed him of R10 000. Upon noticing law enforcement's presence, the suspects sped away. 'The driver allegedly crossed a central barrier and drove into oncoming traffic, endangering other road users,' Legodi explained. He said the pursuit continued into The Grove Shopping Mall, where the suspect forced entry by tailgating through a boom gate and dropped off two passengers, who fled and remain at large. 'The chase extended into the mall's basement parking, where attempts were made to bring the vehicle to a stop. After warning measures were implemented, the vehicle was stopped.' Legodi added that the driver attempted to escape on foot but was swiftly apprehended. He said law enforcement officers recovered licence plates and items believed to be connected to ongoing investigations. 'The car was traced with the help of the rental company and later returned to its representatives,' said Legodi. 'The primary suspect is currently in custody and faces multiple charges. Investigations are ongoing to arrest the two suspects who are still at large.' He added that no injuries or property damage were reported during the incident. Tshwane police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk offered these safety tips: – Make use of an ATM at a trusted venue. – Go into the bank to request assistance. – Make sure you have your bank card after you make a transaction. – Make sure to stand alone at the ATM. – Listen to your intuition and walk away if you feel uncomfortable in a situation. Tshwane warns of fake truck driver job scam

The Tshwane metro has cautioned residents to stay alert following a fake job advert circulating on social media. According to Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, on June 9, the misleading message circulating on social media platforms falsely advertised a truck driver vacancy within Tshwane's Region 6 Environmental Management Division. 'The fraudulent message claims that the city is seeking a physically fit truck driver to operate specialised machinery such as mechanical stump grinders and chippers, purportedly to maintain trees and green infrastructure in municipal spaces like road reserves, parks, and traffic islands,' said Mashigo. He said, the public is warned that this advertisement is false and did not originate from the metro. 'The city does not advertise jobs through social media or messaging platforms. All legitimate job vacancies are posted in newspapers and on the city's official website ( specifically under the Job Forum and E-Recruitment portals,' Mashigo said. He said any recruitment process outside of these channels should be treated as a scam. 'We urge residents to remain vigilant and not fall victim to these fraudulent schemes. The city will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals found to be spreading false information or attempting to exploit vulnerable job seekers,' he said. Anyone who encounters suspicious job adverts is encouraged to report them immediately to the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department at 012 358 7095/6 for verification and investigation. Community helps to apprehend a store robber

A 40-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this week for robbing a store this past weekend. The arrest came on June 7 at around 15:00 when the suspect was held by community members near the store at the corner of Bloed and Lillian Ngoyi streets. According to Pretoria Central police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise, the suspect had stormed into one of the stores, instructed the owner to close the door and demanded cash. The assailant also struck the owner on the forehead with a firearm he was brandishing, and after collecting the money, fled the scene. 'As he intended to flee the scene, he fired one shot. Community management cornered the suspect and apprehended him with the firearm. The police were called to the scene, and the suspect was handed over to the police,' Nkhumise said. Police recovered the handgun, a Taurus 9mm magazine loaded with 16 rounds, cash amounting to R3 000 and three cellphones. The suspect was later taken to the Pretoria Central Station for dentition and charged. Station commander Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba welcomed the arrest and thanked the community for their bravery in cornering the suspect as he intended to flee the crime scene. 'We understand the danger the community was faced with but I'm happy that no one was harmed in the process. This shows that policing is a joint effort, and the police are still dependent on the community to come forward and report any criminal activities. Whistleblowing plays a crucial role in curbing the surge of crime, and the masses can report crime anonymously,' Mashaba said. The suspect will also face charges of pointing, assaulting, and discharging a firearm in a public space.
