Man arrested over tampering of power lines in Elandspoort

Man arrested over tampering of power lines in Elandspoort Ward 1 councillor, Leon Kruyshaar, has expressed his concern at the ongoing spate of cable theft incidents in the west of Pretoria. This follows the arrest of a 33-year-old suspected of tampering with municipal infrastructure by the Tshwane Metro Police Department's (TMPD) cable theft unit. According to a social media post by the TMPD, said a man was apprehended in Elandspoort in the west of Pretoria, after receiving a tip-off on July 19. 'TMPD members responded to a complaint in Elandspoort. Upon arrival, a suspect was found in the act of tampering with essential infrastructure.' The suspect was arrested and detained at a local police station. Kruyshaar said cable theft continued to be a recurring struggle for the west of Pretoria. He reported that on Van Der Hoff Road near the Zandfontein Substation, four feeders were reported to be down on July 21. 'It's just almost no chance that four feeders go down at the same time. Maybe one, but not four. 'These cables have been stolen on numerous occasions. Just in the last month, I think this is the fourth time they've been stolen. 'This matter needs to be escalated to the cable theft team. We need to make this a priority, stop the cable theft in this area, because it's really an inconvenience to consumers and factories in the area. 'Those who don't have generators either have to close down for the day or work with the inconvenience and suffer financial losses,' Kruyshaar said. Estimations are that South Africa loses more than R500-million every year due to cable theft and vandalism of municipal infrastructure. Residents can report any suspicious behaviour to 012 358 7095/6. Watch here: Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to [email protected] or phone us on 083 625 4114. Metro cracks down on Lyttelton lawlessness

Residents in Lyttelton are pleased with the enforcement and clean-up operation carried out in their area on June 27, which targeted illegal activities around car washes, informal food vendors and shebeens. The operation involved a co-ordinated effort between the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), municipal health department, and city officials to address a growing number of complaints from residents. Freedom Front Plus PR Councillor Wesley Jacobs said the action was long overdue and formed part of ongoing plans to clean up hotspots in Lyttelton. 'We first conducted a clean-up on Fountains Avenue, where we removed illegal settlers in front of the trees due to resident complaints. I arranged for a Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB) and a waste truck to assist,' he said. He confirmed that an illegal car wash operating on the same road had been shut down, and the equipment was confiscated. 'Efforts were also made to address another illegal car wash at the Shoprite Centre. 'The TMPD has committed to removing its equipment daily to ensure the car wash does not operate there anymore. Zero tolerance will be enforced.' Jacobs added that he would soon obtain a lock for a nearby hydrant being used to illegally access water. The most extensive part of the operation took place in the Sports Park informal settlement, where officers raided shebeens operating illegally. 'We managed to confiscate alcohol and large speakers from these places. One of the shebeen owners was arrested on site,' Jacobs said. While several hotspots were targeted during the operation, the Sports Park area remained the main focus. He also revealed that a food establishment operating without any health, safety, or fire certificates was shut down and issued a R5 000 fine by the health department. 'The establishment was non-compliant with previous fines, and the health department found unsanitary conditions. 'They now have 30 days to pay the fine and produce the correct documentation or face closure,' he said. Despite a few setbacks, including the absence of Home Affairs and Social Development officials, which prevented officers from addressing undocumented foreign nationals, Jacobs expressed his commitment to seeing the job through. 'I will continue to monitor the area and make life more unpleasant for these illegal operators as legally possible,' he said. He also confirmed that additional operations would resume on July 4, following a brief pause due to end-of-financial-year procurement delays. The community has responded positively to the clean-up efforts. Muhammad Naidoo said that visible action has made residents feel safer and more hopeful. 'This kind of intervention was desperately needed. The noise from the illegal shebeens and the constant foot traffic from the car wash created an environment where people felt unsafe in their own neighbourhoods,' he said. Naidoo commended Jacobs and the TMPD for their persistence. 'It's reassuring to see our complaints being taken seriously. I hope this momentum continues and that more long-term solutions are implemented.' Another resident, Christina van Staden, noted that the clean-up has already made a noticeable difference in the area's appearance and atmosphere. 'The illegal car washes were not only an eyesore but also a public health concern, with all the wastewater flowing into the streets. 'The fines for illegal businesses are a step in the right direction. We need to support those who follow the rules, and I'm glad to see the city starting to enforce that.' Rekord reached out to the TMPD for comment, but no response was received by the time of publication. Metro police praised for restoring order in by-law raids

Tshwane police have received praise from the multiparty coalition government for carrying out by-law operations throughout the city. On behalf of the government, MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee, commended the Tshwane Metro Police Department for executing decisive, lawful action across the city as part of a targeted by-law enforcement campaign. The operations took place on June 24 in different parts of Tshwane, including regions 1, 4 and 6. Coetzee said the executed operations are not isolated, as they form part of the metro's strategy to restore order in the city. 'They form part of a broader strategy to restore order, enforce accountability and reclaim public spaces for the people of Tshwane.' He said in Region 4, multiple businesses received fines for failing to adhere to the by-laws. 'In Centurion, the TMPD issued 14 Section 56 notices to businesses found violating municipal by-laws. 'Lawlessness under the guise of commerce will not be tolerated,' he said. Illegal structures and traders removed across the City. — City of Tshwane (@CityTshwane) June 25, 2025 He said in Region 4, Mamelodi, two illegal street traders operating in prohibited zones were removed, with confiscations made and notices served. 'This administration is drawing a clear line that our streets will not be surrendered to disorder.' He further said a crackdown was comprehensive in Region 1, as by-laws were enforced in the region. 'In Mabopane, 11 illegal structures were demolished. In Winternest, 79 unlawful structures were dismantled in a co-ordinated effort involving the crime prevention and land invasion units.' He said illegal advertisements were removed, goods were seized, and offenders were served with enforcement notices. Coetzee said the operations were not just enforcement, but a reaffirmation of the rule of law in Tshwane. 'We are rebuilding a city founded on respect, order and justice. The days of impunity are over. 'Let this stand as a warning to those who defy the law and a promise to residents who demand a city that works. We are taking action, and we will not yield to injustice,' he said Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to bennittb@ or phone us on 083 625 4114. Parliament calls for urgent action against the drug epidemic

Urgent measures discussed by Parliament to combat South Africa's drug crisis on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Image: Tshwane Metro Police Department Parliamentarians debated robust measures to curtail the drug epidemic in South Africa on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The United Nations General Assembly in 1987 decided to observe June 26 as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. Alcohol abuse is a complex socio-economic issue that requires a multi-stakeholder and integrated approach towards a drug-free society, captured in the National Drug Master Plan. ANC MP Keamotseng Ramaila said cartels are motivated by financial greed, with many individuals who have been destroyed by drug abuse. Ramaila said tragedies were unfolding in homes and shattered the very foundation of family life. 'Children in these households face neglect and abuse throughout their lives, compromising emotional and mental health. It is a heartbreaking picture. We should stand together, irrespective of political parties, to fight and combat the drug trade.' Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Visvin Reddy, uMkhonto weSizwe MP, called for the establishment of a national drug unit that must be independent and comprise local police structures. Reddy stated that the unit should have the ability to raid, seize, and arrest quickly, effectively, and fiercely. He said rehabilitation is supposed to bring hope, but too often, it has become a failure, underfunded and disconnected from reality. 'There must be a ring-fenced and dedicated budget for rehabilitation services. We must lead this charge not just in words, but through daily measurable action.' According to Reddy, drugs were tearing up communities and had tightened their grip on homes, children, and our future. He also spoke of Phoenix resident, Lincoln Moodley, 24, who was arrested and charged with the alleged murder of Kamatchie Naicker and the attempted murder of his 63-year-old mother, Shirley Appalsamy. 'This incident shook me to the core. I visited Appalsamy and her throat was slit because her assailant wanted to take out her chain. The perpetrator of this was not somebody unknown. A child that she once cradled, now consumed by addiction, turned into a monster. What kind of darkness and poison is this that corrupts so deeply that family becomes foe?' he said. He also touched on incidents in Cape Town and Eldorado Park, Johannesburg. 'In Chatsworth, a mother had no choice but to chain her son to a bed just to keep him from stealing and using drugs again. When my children were growing up, my wife and I prayed every day that they would never come into contact with drugs because when that substance enters your home, peace will leave,' Reddy added. Paulnita Marais, EFF MP, exposed South Africa's broken response to addiction and demanded urgent, humane action. Marais called out the government's failure to fund and coordinate community-level interventions, revealing that only 46% of municipalities have Local Drug Action Committees as required by law. She slammed the defunding of vital rehabilitation services — over 246 state-funded beds lost in Gauteng alone, while private rehab remains unaffordable for the poor. 'With only eight public in-patient centres across six provinces, South Africans battling addiction are being left to die in silence,' she said.

Henry Craill, 32, was among the six suspects arrested in February after law enforcement authorities uncovered a drug syndicate in the capital city. The group appeared at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court after they allegedly sold steroids, scheduled medicine, stimulants, and other performance-enhancing drugs via the internet. Batohi applied for and was granted a preservation of the property order in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca). The order pertains to Craill, in his personal capacity, and in his capacity as a member of Geo Zone Consulting in Pretoria and all persons who may have an interest in the property. 'If you have an interest in the property, you should understand that it is now at risk. You are advised to obtain legal advice on whether your interest can be protected and, if so, on how to protect it. You are notified that the NDPP will, within 90 days of publication of this notice, apply to the high court under section 48 of the Poca for a forfeiture order,' reads the court papers. In addition, the preservation order will remain in force until the application for a forfeiture order is finalised and until any forfeiture order that is made is satisfied. The court appealed to anyone intending to oppose the application for a forfeiture order or intends to apply for an order excluding their interest from the forfeiture order in respect of the property must enter an appearance in terms of the order. Interested parties have been asked to make an appearance and comply with the requirements and must be delivered to the Office of the State Attorney. 'If you enter an appearance in terms of the order you will be entitled to be given 14 days notice of the application by the applicant (Batohi) for a forfeiture order in respect of the property,' the high court explained. The court warned that if interested parties fail to enter an appearance in terms of the order or to comply with the requirements, they will not be given notice of the application for a forfeiture order and will not be entitled to appear at the hearing of the application. 'You may, on good cause shown (including the non-availability of any other suitable remedy to protect your legitimate rights or interests), on three days notice in urgent instances and at least seven days notice in other instances to the applicant, and within eight days of becoming aware of the order, apply for reconsideration of the order,' the court ordered.
