Bonnie beats Jesus to powerlifting gold at World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin continued his dominance in the sport, winning the men's 72kg gold medal at the World Cup in Beijing on Sunday.
The Sarawak-born clinched the gold with a best lift of 215kg, finishing ahead of Cuba's Jesus Cuevas Cisneros (175kg) and India's Ramubhai B. Bhambava (151kg).
However, Bonnie's effort was way off his world record of 232kg set at the Paris Paralympics last year. - Bernama

Rugby-Ten uncapped players in England squad for Argentina/US tour

LONDON -England coach Steve Borthwick has included 10 uncapped players in a 36-man squad for the summer tour of Argentina as he looks to build depth and offer new opportunities in the absence of 13 men away on duty with the British and Irish Lions. Charlie Atkinson, Seb Atkinson, Arthur Clark (all Gloucester), Will Muir, Max Ojomoh and Guy Pepper (all Bath), Oscar Beard and Luke Northmore (Harlequins) along with Sale's Joe Carpenter and Emmanuel Iyogun of Northampton are the new faces, some of whom played in last Saturday's non-cap match against a France XV. Jamie George and George Ford, who has 99 caps, will co-captain the squad as England face the Pumas in Buenos Aires on July 5 and in San Juan on July 12 and play the United States in Washington, D.C. on July 19. On England's Argentina tour in the Lions year of 2017 Tom Curry and Sam Underhill broke through and two years later were key components of the team that reached the World Cup final, as did prop Ellis Genge. "The three-test series is a huge challenge and a valuable opportunity for the continued development of this squad," Borthwick said in a statement. "For some of the younger players, this will be their first experience of touring overseas with England. Travelling together helps strengthen team bonds and offers a valuable chance for new players to integrate into our environment. "It's an exciting test for us, and we're looking forward to seeing how we continue to evolve as a team." Hevel becomes latest Harimau Malaya star to join JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have unveiled another Harimau Malaya heritage player, Hector Hevel, as their latest signing for the 2025-2026 M-League season — just hours after announcing Spanish-born defender Jon Irazabal. The move came as little surprise after Hevel had previously hinted that he would be joining the Southern Tigers next season. However, JDT made it official on Monday via their official Facebook page, confirming the 29-year-old midfielder's arrival. The announcement came roughly two hours after they revealed Irazabal as their new recruit. Hevel has already made two appearances for Malaysia, netting a goal on his debut in a 2-0 win over Nepal during the 2027 Asian Cup qualifier in March. He also played a key role in Malaysia's stunning 4-0 rout of Vietnam in their Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. In addition to Hevel and Irazabal, JDT have already confirmed the signings of Ibrahim Manusi, Jairo Da Silva and Antonio Glauder for the new season. .

Olympic House To Be Completed By 2028

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headquarters, known as Olympic House, is expected to be completed by 2028. OCM president Tan Sri Mohd Norza Zakaria said work on the RM97 million building is set to commence at the end of this year, pending approval from local authorities. "I think, in terms of construction, it will take 36 months and involve two phases. The first phase is the main building, while the second phase includes a banquet hall and a hotel… we will do our best. bootstrap slideshow "We've already received the green light from Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh for the groundbreaking ceremony, which we hope to hold at the end of July. From there, we will begin the submission process to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to obtain the necessary building approval," he said. He was speaking to reporters after opening the Olympic Day celebration at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here today. Also present were Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) chairman Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz and OCM deputy president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad. Mohd Norza also said that OCM will collaborate with PSM to expedite the construction of the Olympic House. "Phase one can be accelerated, and it very much depends on this strategic collaboration. "That is why it is important for all of us - OCM, PSM and all 58 national sports associations - to be aligned and follow the same timeline," he said.
