BJP to contest Nilambur bypoll, fields Advocate Mohan George

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid speculations that the party would likely not contest for the Nilambur bypoll seat, the BJP leadership has announced their candidate, former Kerala Congress Joseph Malappuram district president Advocate Mohan George.
62-year-old Mohan George is a native of Chungathara. He is a lawyer by profession, working at Nilambur and Manjeri. He is the former general secretary KSC, KYF, Mar Thoma Sabha council member and Mar Thoma college council member. He also acted as a vice president at Chungathara Mar Thoma Church, YMCA Chungathara.
The party leadership chose to pick the candidate from the Christian community in an attempt to split a chunk of Christian votes.
The Christian community makes up about 12 per cent of the total votes in the constituency. BJP hopes to attract community votes in the aftermath of the human-wildlife conflict and the Munambam Waqf land issue.
With PV Anwar also expected to contest, Nilambur will witness a strong fight.
Earlier, there were differences of opinion among BJP leaders about whether to contest or not, since one faction inside the party thought the Nilambur by-election was an imposed one.
Later, the BJP decided to leave the seat to BDJS, which also didn't want to take over the seat. However, the BJP decided to field its own candidate.
In the last election, BJP candidate TK Ashok Kumar won 8595 votes with a vote share of 1.9%.

"Made no scapegoats, magisterial enquiry ordered": Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Bengaluru stampede

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday addressed the recent stampede incident in Bengaluru, stating that the officers responsible have been suspended and a magisterial enquiry has been ordered to investigate the matter. While speaking to reporters, Kharge said, "The officers who are responsible have been suspended. We have made no scapegoats... A magisterial enquiry has been ordered and our next action will be according to the findings of the enquiry..." Responding to criticism from the BJP, Kharge hit back saying, "BJP wants the CM, DCM, and the Home Minister to resign, so going by that same logic, Yogi Adityanath must resign, Amit Shah must resign for the Pahalgam attack, S Jaishankar must resign for the failure of foreign policy, and PM Narendra Modi must also resign for misleading the whole country..." We don't even know how many people died. We are at least owning up to our mistake and taking responsibility... We are not hiding casualties...," Kharge said, adding, "Terrorists come into India and shoot down 26 people, and we don't even know where the terrorists are, but no one asks for the resignation of the Home Minister Amit Shah" He acknowledged that the state government could have planned better, "Yes, we could have planned better and done things in a better way, and we are looking into it..." Live Events On Thursday, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge admitted that the stampede near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium , which caused the death of 11 people, could have been prevented with better planning and coordination. Speaking to media persons, Kharge said, "Yes, there has been a mistake. This could have been avoided with better planning and coordination. A stadium with a capacity of 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people, poured out on the streets. Although we did our best, we were unable to manage the crowd." He added that the Chief Minister has taken responsibility for the incident and assured that corrective measures will be implemented. Kharge also accused the BJP of politicising the tragedy. "BJP likes to politicise everything. The same BJP, when told that a victory parade on an open bus in such a short time was not possible due to a lack of time to make arrangements, said that we were insulting the team. Now that post is deleted. BJP's intention of politicising everything is not healthy," he said. Following the death of 11 people in the stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, the Karnataka police have suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh took charge as the city police commissioner earlier today. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect. Notably, Karnataka Police filed an FIR against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee , Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), among others, in the Bengaluru stampede incident.' In response, KSCA has filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking the quashing of FIRs filed against it. KSCA board of directors, including President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A. Shankar, Treasurer E.S. Jairam, appealed for the cancellation of the FIR. The hearing on the petition will be held today in the afternoon by a bench of Justice Krishna Kumar.

Tripura undertakes Rs 578 cr projects in five months

Agartala, June 6 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday informed that his government has worked on infrastructure development worth about Rs 578 crore so far this year. The Chief Minister inaugurated as many as 10 projects virtually from Kumarghat under Unokoti district and laid the foundation stone of five projects. The central government has awarded the two underdeveloped districts of Tripura, Gomati and Dhalai, for doing exemplary development works in the past few years under BJP's rule. Highlighting the development, he said Kumarghat, Dharmanagar, and Udaipur railway stations in the state are being modernised. More new roads and building infrastructures have been coming up in the districts to ensure equitable growth in the state, besides development in the health sector, agriculture, sports, and artificial intelligence. Without naming anybody, Dr Saha said that the days of politics through cunning are gone and stated, 'We want to go along with everyone. But if anyone doesn't want it, there is nothing to be done. Politics by force will not be accepted under any circumstances. Simplicity doesn't mean that we will accept it if anyone says anything. Whatever needs to be done will be done strictly.' He underlined that this government has given development as one of its top priorities. However, some people are still trying to tarnish the government. But there is a limit to everything. If anyone goes beyond the limit, it will not be tolerated under any circumstances. UNI BB ARN

'Evil...': BJP Slams Congress Over Bengaluru Top Cop's Suspension After Stampede Horror

Last Updated: A row erupted in Karnataka after CM Siddaramaiah suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand over the Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy. BJP accused Congress of scapegoating. A row has erupted in Karnataka after Congress leader and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand over Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy that claimed 11 lives on May 4. The Bengaluru CP was suspended a day following the stadium horror that unfolded during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Indian Premier League victory celebration, jointly organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and DNA Networks. The Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress-led state government of being selfish for not taking any responsibility for the mishap and using the police officers as scapegoat. Calling the government's move 'shameful", former Chief Minister and BJP leader BS Yediyurappa on Thursday alleged that state government suspended five police officers in order to pacify public. Siddaramaiah-led government forgot their moral responsibility, the ex-CM said. While referring to the chaos that allegedly took lace due to mismanagement, he added that the state government has created 'a dark history." Taking to X, Yediyurappa wrote, 'It is a shameful act that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers themselves stood up and the entire government took responsibility for the system, and while celebrating RCB's victory, they forgot their moral responsibility and, with the evil thought of calming the public's anger, suspended five police officers, including the Police Commissioner, as victims. Even before the ceremony, when news of the deaths and injuries in the stampede reached, the Congress government ended the felicitation program in a huff and puff, and then continued the program at Chinnaswamy Stadium, creating a dark history in Karunad (sic)." He added that the state govt took this decision of suspending the officials to protect themselves from court judgement and to continue to hold the chair. 'Suspending officials to appease public anger and escape the judgment of the High Court is a selfish move of clinging to the chair. If the Chief Minister @siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister @DKShivakumar and Home Minister @DrParameshwara have any morals, they should take responsibility for this tragic incident and resign immediately (sic),"he further wrote. 'Murderous': BJP Alleges Congress Insulted Bodies Of Victims Referring to the Karnataka govt as 'murderous", the Karnataka BJP also claimed that the Victim's bodies that were handed over to their families were brought in 'ambulances without freezers." The Karnataka BJP tweeted, 'The murderous @INCKarnataka government has insulted even the bodies of the dead with its irresponsibility. It has proven how shameless it is by providing ambulances without freezers to hand over dead bodies to families. Sending bodies hundreds of kilometers away in hearses without freezers is truly inhumane… CM @siddaramaiah , DCM @DKShivakumar, doesn't your murderous government have the guts to transport the dead bodies properly..!!(sic)." Leader of Opposition in state assembly R Ashoka also echoed these concerns, questioning the Congress leadership's contradictions. 'Yesterday, DK Shivakumar said police were not responsible. Now Siddaramaiah has suspended the Police Commissioner and other officials. What is going on?" Ashoka asked. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of RCB, event management, and KSCA officials. A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation is underway and a judicial commission is proposed to investigate lapses. tags : bengaluru karnataka Location : Bengaluru, India, India First Published: June 06, 2025, 13:40 IST News india 'Evil...': BJP Slams Congress Over Bengaluru Top Cop's Suspension After Stampede Horror
