Austrian space diver Felix Baumgartner dies in Italian swimming pool after paraglider mishap

Malay Mail18-07-2025
ROME, July 18 — Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian daredevil who famously jumped from the edge of the Earth's atmosphere in a 2012 stunt, died on Thursday in Italy, the emergency services there announced.
A senior official with the emergency services in the Marches region, northern Italy, confirmed his death to AFP. Police at Porto Sant'Elpidio, on Italy's Adriatic coast, had identified Baumgartner, he said.
While he was not able to say what had been the cause of death, a report in the Il Corriere della Sera daily said that Baumgartner had lost control of his paraglider after suffering a malaise.
He landed in the swimming pool of a holiday residence at Porto Sant'Elpidio, slightly injuring a young woman.
The accident happened at around 4:00 pm, the paper reported.
Baumgartner's dramatic 2012 jump from a capsule more than 39 kilometres (24 miles) above the Earth was the most spectacular of a string of record-breaking stunts. — AFP

I got along with him great and he seemed like a nice guy," Trump said in an interview on Friday with Newsmax. "I didn't know him well, but when I ran for office, he was very hostile." Asked if that meant he was not inclined to pardon Combs, Trump said: "I would say so, yeah." A New York jury found Combs guilty last month of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. He was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges after a marathon trial in which he was accused of harrowing abuse. Sentencing has been set for October 3. - AFP

Pamela Anderson: 'Yes, Sylvester Stallone tried to seduce me with a Porsche'

Canadian-US actress Pamela Anderson revealed Stallone's offer in her 2023 Netflix documentary, 'Pamela, A Love Story'. Photo: AFP Pamela Anderson has hit back at Sylvester Stallone for denying her claim that he once tried to woo her and make her his 'No. 1 girl' by offering to buy her a condo and a Porsche. Anderson stuck to her story about Stallone while appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen Sunday. Seated next to her new boyfriend, Liam Neeson, her co-star in the cop-drama spoof The Naked Gun , Anderson played along with Cohen's game in which the host asked her to respond to media reports about her. Cohen explained that Anderson, 58, revealed Stallone's offer in her 2023 Netflix documentary, Pamela, A Love Story . As Anderson nodded, Cohen then said Stallone, 79, allegedly asked the former Baywatch star to be his 'No. 1 girl' in exchange for buying her a condo and a luxury sports car. In her documentary, Anderson also had said she rejected Stallone's offer by quipping: 'Does that mean there's a No. 2 girl?' Stallone allegedly replied to her rejection by saying: 'That's the best offer you're gonna get, honey. You're in Hollywood now.' Cohen then asked Anderson: 'What was your reaction to Stallone coming out after the doc was released and saying this was a falsehood?' Anderson laughed, shook her head, rolled her eyes said, 'Well, how could you make that up? You know?' 'Right!' Cohen replied, as Anderson looked to Neeson, then laughed again and said, 'That was pretty specific.' Cohen then asked Anderson whether there was a 'different car' that might have changed her mind about dating the Rocky legend. 'Maybe, like, a Shelby Cobra,' Anderson joked, before repeating 'no' several times. Neeson, meanwhile, laughed along before admitting to Cohen that he was yet to offer his new girlfriend a car. And while Anderson said she turned down action-star Stallone's affair offer, it was reported last week that she and Neeson, a late-career action star with the Taken movies, are dating. Indeed, their affection for each other was pretty evident on Cohen's show as the Irish actor reached out to touch Anderson's shoulder, and she sweetly patted his hand. A source told Us Weekly that Anderson and Neeson 'always had chemistry while they were filming The Naked Gun , and their friendship naturally developed into more.' This source also said the new couple are 'learning how to navigate (a romance) together' as they continue their whirlwind publicity tour for The Naked Gun , a reboot of the hit comedy franchise from the late 1980s and early 1990s. 'They are both shy and have tried to stay private, but the spark between them is obvious,' the source added. It was reported last week that Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are dating. 'The statement from Pamela Anderson attributed to my client is false and fabricated,' the rep said in a statement in 2023. 'Mr Stallone confirms that he never made any portion of that statement.' – Mercury News/Tribune News Service

Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola in Rome hospital for planned surgery, not emergency, says rep

LOS ANGELES, Aug 6 — Francis Ford Coppola, the acclaimed American director of 'The Godfather' movies and 'Apocalypse Now,' underwent a non-emergency medical procedure by appointment on Tuesday at a hospital in Rome and is doing fine, according to a US-based representative. 'Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure with acclaimed Dr Andrea Natale, his doctor of over 30 years, and is resting nicely,' the representative said in response to Italian media reports that the director was hospitalised. 'All is well.' The 86-year-old filmmaker was admitted to the Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in the Italian capital, news agency ANSA reported. The US based representative declined to give any details about the nature of Coppola's medical procedure, but said: 'There was not an emergency. He went to the hospital in a car.' The representative specifically disputed as 'not true' a report from the Italian website that Coppola had suffered atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat, before entering the operating room for what was to have been a long-planned surgical procedure. A spokesperson for the hospital did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Coppola was in Italy to promote his latest movie, the sci-fi epic 'Megalopolis,' a US$120 million self-funded production about a visionary architect's quest to transform a fictional future version of New York City called New Rome into a utopian community. The film, which has drawn mixed reviews and struggled at the box office following its 2024 debut at the Cannes Film Festival, was reported to have received a special screening at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro, Italy. The Italian-American director, who has won five Academy Awards, three of four of them for his work on the first two films in 'The Godfather' trilogy, widely considered by cinema buffs to rank among the greatest movies of all time. — Reuters
